The cellphone agents only offer help if triggered by a diary event or if a definite pattern of behaviour, such as going to the movies every Friday, has been established.
My guess is I'm not the only person here who is worried about devices making decisions for us. Notifying me when to make a decision is ok (Well, to a certain extent), but making the decision requires intelligence. The more intelligence the device has to make decisions, the less the corresponding human is using (ala some corporate executive who thinks the device is 'neato'). Do we really want our corporate executives even dumber than they currently are!?!
I could go into a rant how such devices are "Un-American" and support "Big-Brother" but I will save that for another time.
Actually, it's not quite that bad. Doom 3 is ahead of the rest and aiming for GeForceFX/Radeon9700. The minimum will be GeForce2/Radeon8000. Anything earlier will just not have the features and software rendering will be too slow.
Don't forget, there will be an Xbox (Basically GeForce3) Version of Doom3, yet with the PC version it still isn't a good reason to buy one!
Dammit, I would have had an Xbox months ago if they just made a decent number of exclusive games fot it!
If I were Microsoft, I would be putting ALL my Xbox resources into getting some damn games out!

--- No, it's not off-topic. It's Anti-Microsoft and this is Slashdot.
Do you seriously open your mouth before hearing what everyone has to say!?! If I want a graphics card that performs well on technology that was state-of-the-art two years ago, I'll use current games. Then in two months it will become obsolite and I'll go buy a new one. Does that sound like a smart decision? It is what after all you are recommending!
You have to realize those games started development up to two years ago and use graphics card technology from that time (Direct X 7 anyone?) Now we are at Direct X 9, with vertex and pixel shaders!!!
You may not realize the importance of this, the the graphics performance of these cards now matter more than ever thanx to these new programmable pipelines. With these cards developers now have freedom in real-time that was only possible with SGI's renderman in the past (and NOT in real-time).
Personally, I realized when the 8500 was caught on the Quark3 issue that ATI was still a better deal and bought the card anyways. ATI has been better on the "bang-for-the-buck" benchmark since the Rage 128 and I don't expect that to change, even when they're #1.:)

This is an old story already, but I wanted to post this after reading the Dvorak story.
I think it's time that we, as members of an industry made a statement. Many would consider this a waste of money, but many more would see this as the ultimate message to Microsoft and others who think Open-Source will never work and ultimately fail.
We HAVE to get together as a group, and buy SCO outright!
Now, one way to look at this is as "Blender, part 2". Another would be, "What better way to move all OS's forward than to release the Unix code so _anyone_ can access it (no, BSD doesn't count).
In any case, I ask you to not look at this as investing in a company that will be dead in two years, but look at it as investing in the future of Linux, and the computing world in general.
Ok, I read too many posts _not_ to say something myself. So here goes...
I don't think violent video games cause violence. I do however believe that video games as the _only_ form of competition in the child's life is VERY dangerous and, at a early age, cause the child to believe that all competition is like that in the game. The point I'm making is simply "Balance".
It's ok to have the games, but be sure there are other activities to participate and compete in (preferibly outside). Too many hippie parent's and teacher's already believe "competition is BAD!" yet their kid's always seem to be the one's that end up shooting up a school and no one can figure out why...
Competition causes participants to strive for something. It's gives them motivation and purpose. Without it, they begin to feel that they have no identity and their actions do not matter. That is when they become dangerous.
I think Apple has really struck a chord with many PC users that no one expected. There are a large number of users out there that would perfer a simple operating system that was easy to use and customize, but not contain so many programs that it slows the system down. The problem with both Windows AND Linux is that they've become so large with so many things that people will never use that it is leaving many users disinterested. In fact, probably one of the reasons people haven't switched to something else is because of lack of ackwardness (Solaris, AIX), rudeness (SCO, please don't flame me!:) ), lack of marketshare or support (BSD's), or simply bought out (BeOS, still my favorite).
Anyone who is seriously wondering why there aren't better, more efficient operating systems out there, please check out the stories behind BeOS and, if you are able, try out the personal edition of Version 5. Some of us still remember how close Apple came to using it instead and those of us who do know why.
If someone could ever make an OS near as fast and efficient as BeOS was. I would put my time and my code into it!
They couldn't lose and survive. This case shows a nice parallel with Nvdia vs. 3dfx, except nastier!:)
The result of that lawsuit basically decided which of those two companies would exist afterward, in this case however I think IBM could survive with the cockroaches let alone survive a lawsuit. Let us not forget, even congress tried to split IBM up once.
-B
PS:
Or if you're an 80's sport's fan, NFL vs. USFL, but only in the way that the USFL realized the only way it could stay alive was the winnings from the lawsuit.
I have to also state that while video games can be used to relieve stress and anger by expressing it upon poor innocent polygons instead, it shouldn't be treated as a substitute for the real thing.
The true fact is that man is naturally aggressive and it is only society that takes it away from us. One should still find some physical outlet whether it's exercise, martial arts, or some other form of physical activity that involves competition, even if it's against yourself.
As a game developer, I feel games shouldn't be to blame for violence, but as a man, I feel games shouldn't have the responsibility of replacing it.
Just when you thought you knew how the story would end (with IBM buying SCO to quit being annoyed by them). SUDDENLY A PLOT TWIST! Novell could end up getting SCO for FREE!!!:)
Until you become a developer... Then these benchmarks begin to have meaning when you start to decide which card you want to aim for. Suddenly it no longer matters how the card is doing playing against the games of today; you too busy worrying about the games of tomorrow!
Thats why "Real world testing" is important. While not always the greatest comparison, its much better in most cases.
"Real world testing" is great, if you're just a gamer. The problem is with independent developers who want to know about the performance of a card. Not only are features important but also how well can the card perform. I put both in consideration when I'm looking for a card. I don't consider current game benchmarks much because those games won't matter in 6 months, or by the time I finally finish my game.:)
Sorry I have to mention this. But everytime I ever asked a question relating to 3DFx to nvidia they would give this response so it's now etched in my skull.
"Nvidia never purchased 3DFx. Nvidia acquired the assets of 3DFx corp. as the result of the lawsuit filed on blah blah blah....."
Yeah, I know, ends up meaning the same thing. But had to mention it.
Some people say Brave New World was written two years before it should have been. (It was written before WW2. I think it has had a large impact on the current world though. Imagine this large global society that puts other cultures into small "reservations" to be left alone.:)
And, as anyone who has ever stopped at a traffic light in Ohio or Michigan knows, I don't even need to explain the similarities of 1984.
All you people over the years always ragging on Microsoft for being too big. You regreted letting it get that large and swore you would not let let happen again. You casted your eyes so much so upon Microsoft that you let an even bigger Monopoly form.

I would say it's a draw right now between Quanity and Quality. After all, the other game were hyped up about is Half-Life 2.

Sun will be around for quite a some time, because they offer specific product for one market on which they have quite a monopoly.

;) )
What market is that?
1. Servers? (DELL,IBM,HP)
2. Java? (it's free, and IBM has been doing a better job with it lately.)
3. Workstations? (Anything with Linux, Opteron
4. OS!?! (hehe, had to mention it
So? What market does Sun own again???
