  1. Re:More useless legislation on Driver Privacy Act Introduced In US Senate · · Score: 4, Insightful

Not that I'm skeptical or anything... but I would expect this to end up being just like the "Privacy Policy" notices we all get from banks and other places, or HIPPA - a nice sounding bit of legislation with so many holes in it, the 100-200 page bill will end up doing nothing but giving jobs to "compliance officers" while actually resulting in less opportunity for the "consumer" to sue or block the data access. Think about how HIPPA actually works, since the insurance company needs to know what the doctor treated you for, your "data" gets sent to them (if not the actual paper chart, a summary of what boil on what limb, or what infectious disease test was used). Expect that car companies will hammer this hard in lobbying...

You think it means something ...

... until you see some guy named Sarek Vulcansden scampering off to the embassy of a South American nation with a Thumbdrive full of evidence the NSA has been tracking your every move and the President denies such claims until they trickle out in the media, including Angela Merkel's predilection for Krispy Kreme whenever she's in the US. About that time you realize laws don't mean much if there be people who think they only apply to other agencies.

    You cheapen all life.

    This raises a point.

Is it vengeance or is that we simply want these people out of our lives permanently.

Some clearly want the convicted to get their comeuppance -- they want closure of a final variety, this convict will pay the ultimate price, at least in this mortal form, being ejected from the game.

Others see no chance of reforming the convict and do not relish them living a relatively easy life while everyone else has to work for their food and shelter. Prison life isn't really so horrible that some people are willing to return to it -- finding the outside world too much of a challenge or this is where their buddies from the street are and now they can go hang with them. Prison isn't so much a punishment as a way to segregate those convicted from society and visa-versa. Were you in a tiny town you and your neighbors may feel a need for accelerated and terminal judgement against villains, even of offences which seem of too little consequence to warrant a death sentence -- such it was in many sparsely populated communities at times in history.

The phrasing in the 8th amendment is "cruel and unusual" FYI, and I'm pretty sure a court will find a stay of executions necessary until a new method is devised.

What is considered Cruel and Unusual changes over time.

A firing squad, beheading or hanging were considered just fine for a long time. Same goes for the Electric Chair, it was all the rage for decades. Now we're trying to put people to "sleep" with a comfy pillow and a bedtime story.

Personally, I'd like to see hanging make a comeback.

Yeah, see how that works on Farcebook.

They create content for their advertising which is adapting to ad-block. If you try to block you notice the tags are random-looking gobbledegook so are a bit trickier to block -- each time the add is sent to you the wrapper looks a bit different. Try to block it with a brute force pattern and you break the Farcebook page.

On top of that Farcebook refreshes the right panel with a new load of content with new tags.

I only use Farcebook as one example, there are likely others and the adds/blocking war continues to advance the technology on both sides.

The most remarkable thing about John was his setting up on Street Corners in a city. Even with all that light pollution he could show people some of the more astounding things in the night sky.

I've set up my 10 inch SNT on street corners a couple times, though a bit uneasily as I always worried someone would knock it over. Showing the moons of Jupiter and Saturn was always a lot of fun. Once at Skies over Yosemite, as I was just setting up and had the scope aimed at Jupiter someone saw a "spot" on Jupiter. I thought it was going to be another damn episode of "mascara on the eyepiece", but turned out to be Io in transit. It was two hours later, when Io's shadow passed from the face of the jovian sphere and I was able to get my polar alignment done.

Dobs are such a treat for families because they set up and are easily managed with a minimal effort, unlike the monster I have. Maybe at some point I'll toss the Equatorial Mount and turn it into a Dobsonian mounted scope. :)

"Dobs" are what I recommend to all budding astronomers - don't waste your money on one of those crummy refractors they sell in the malls. Take $400 and buy yourself a decent 6 or 8 inch "Dob" from Meade or Orion and you will have a blast. You'll also be able to see deep space objects your 2 inch refractor isn't going to.
