I've played D&D or some other RPG (here in the US) most of my 31 years, and I for one think it's probably a good idea. I've known A LOT of creepy gamers of high school age aspiring to and then enlisting in the marines. These aren't stable people, they usually don't have a lot of friends, have some messed up social habits, and have a love for guns and weapons that quickly makes me uncomfortable. I can only guess at their motivation for military service, but I'm pretty confident it's not primarily to better ones character and earn money for college.
Since the service in Israel is compulsory, I wonder if there is an statictically high rate of D&D players there that don't conform well to military service.
I did know a lot of Israelis that played on MUDs.

Why is stealing okay when it's "screwing major corporations out of a few dollars"? Theft is theft.
hey, point your flamethrower somewhere else!;) I never said I thought they were wasting money, I just said that was expensive data. Just an observation. Weren't you a little surprised to hear it was just 90 minutes of data? We got a lot more bang for the buck on mars, those things are still running around up there.
Projects like this drive technology and that makes the quality of life on this planet better. Sure there may be a more efficient way to spend this money, but the space program is not a waste. Space age technologies are applied to agriculture, climatology and energy production. All things third world countries can use improvements on.
Besides, just try and tell me how the people of Indonesia would be better off without Velcro and Tang?
I'm gonna go ahead and reply to the ACs troll. Sure, it's a comic book, but Moore's stuff is really heavy and interesting in sort of a "social commentary with a sci-fi spin" kinda way. I loved the watchmen and v for vendetta. And the subtleties and easter eggs in the art work were fabulous. Yeah, it's a comic book, but it's mature enough for even you. maybe too mature;)
From said article: "Synopsis: A powerful story about loss of freedom and individuality, V for Vendetta takes place in a totalitarian England following a devastating war that changed the face of the planet. In a world without political freedom, personal freedom and precious little faith in anything comes a mysterious man in a white porcelain mask who fights political oppressors through terrorism and seemingly absurd acts. It's a gripping tale of the blurred lines between ideological good and evil."
and furthermore: "An adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name, the action-heavy script was written by the "Matrix" writers."
My company has been giving millions of dollars to a company in Redmond Washington and some of that cash is being redirected to support a malware product known only as "Internet Explorer."
I would say Jobs was never "just a kid in a garage" he always had big asperations, and I would say Woz probably still is that kid in the garage. He just found someone who would let him move his toys from the garage to the classroom.
You can never prove cause. Does the lack of sleep cause the obesity or does the obesity cause the lack of sleep? For example, with the obesity comes nasal problems as anyone who has tried to share a hotel room with one of their overweight buddies can probably tell you;)
I didn't know I was "old" until I read this. "Older gamers" played super mario bros? What about the guys who started with Atari's Adventure and Intellivision's Utopia?
Thanks for ruining my week, I'm gonna go find a console game to play for about 48 hours and try and numb the pain.
The point is that gamers are generally more like the mainstream than you might think if you were a fly on the wall of a computer lab at a major university on a Saturday night.
It's not the fact that Jackson put a bazillion features and like 40,000 hours of material on his extended versions that make the LotR extended disks the best. It's the fact that I WATCHED the bazillions of features and even listened to all that commentary and enjoyed (almost) every minute of it.
I even listened to Elijah Wood and Sean Astin's commentary which was basically the same general sentiment regurgitated in different forms: "No YOU'RE the best actor ever" "NO YOU'RE the best actor ever." or "It was such a joy to work with you!" "No, no, I loved working with YOU!" Okay that part was probably a waste of time, but Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan's commentary, that was hilarious.
Solar power isn't the simple answer to a complex problem of "How to we provide enough power for this planet."
If we did what you suggest, i.e. give New York City a thick coat of this paint every summer, you're going to change the climate around New York City. That energy from the sun has a purpose, it heats the planet. If you paint the planet, you could make some serious drastic changes to the environment.
Energy is a complex problem, there are no simple answers. Certainly some dependency on solar power would be a welcome change, but it too has it's draw backs. Nuclear and fossil fuels will have their place for a long time to come.
On a small scale, it's great. But on a large scale, it could potentially be very damaging to the environment. That energy that comes from the Sun DOES something, it heats our planet. Thermodynamics and Climatology. If you start using significant amounts of energy for something else it could have some harsh consequences.
Hey! Maybe it will reverse the global warming trends created by greenhouse gases. But to me that's pulling levers and seeing what happens. It's addressing global warming as an engineering problem (something to be overcome by any means), rather than a environmental issue.
And this does not address the damage creating the solar cells does to the environment.
I'm not a staunch environmentalist by any means. I'm not saying, I'm just saying. All that "Yeah! solar cars and solar houses, it's so obvious! Yeah!" is just ignorances. Providing Energy (providing it with Oil in particular) to the people of this plaent is a very complex problem. You can't just sit in front of your computer and claim it's a simple issue, that Solar power is an obvious solution. Well, I guess you can, but you would be wrong.
Well, first off, one of Hitler's rules that he stated in Mein Kaumpf was to never fight on two fronts. So, in that light, it's him breakign his own rules.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. I agree with the rest of your post. Germany's problems in Russia were much more complicated than simply lacking the resources to fight on two fronts. What I wanted to know is why Hitler gets such a bad rap for it, and your point that he wrote about it being a bad idea pretty much answers that:)
That's pretty good, particularly number three. I guess I'd say it's a little more complicated than "don't fight a two sided war, stupid." On the eastern front, the unusually extreme winter ended up having as much to do with Germany's problems as Russia did. And on the western front, I don't think the Channel was as big a factor as you're giving it credit for. Hitler never did achieved air superiority. If he had, he would have launched operation sea lion and invaded GB. Add to that that the Brits had the opportunity to learn a lot from the failures of the French and Poles. And finally, I'd have to say the Brits are just a group staunch mother f*ckers. Made of a little more resilient stuff than the rest of us:)

Wow, that was expensive for so little data. So now Huygens is just a very expensive popcicle?

I guess no one told Mr. Eisenstadt that bittorrent is a sacred cow! ;)
And I guess nobody told Mr. Jolliffe that he should make sure Marc Eisenstadt webserver could handle the load...

Is this problem really so bad that the government needs to start shelling out loads of cash to implement a system against it?
How is the parent Offtopic? He's just questioning the cost/benefit analysis of a "new reporting system for pilots" which is what the article is about.
That's right on point if you ask me. Is this a serious issue that we should be spending tax dollars on? From what I've read, I'm skeptical.

yeah, the thing is the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Too much gaming definitely caused me problems, for example I find it hard to focus after several hours because my wife is yelling at me.
You now have 2.68 fewer microseconds each day to do whatever it is you do.
;)
Damn! My project is already behind schedule, this is the last thing I need. Oh well, better stop reading so much slashdot
