Ok I just looked up a review at Tom's, and the Matrox G450 really pales in comparison to the Radeon and GeForce 2 MX, but it seems to do an acceptable 36.3 fps running at 1024x768@16 bits. It's certainly no 3D powerhouse, but you get what you pay for. If you're a hardcore gamer, this probably isn't your card, but if you just want a card that will run modern games acceptably, and have rock solid drivers, good linux support, and be inexpensive, buying Matrox is a pretty good idea. Check out the review for yourself:

Well honestly I never checked out the 3D benchmarks for the Matrox cards, because 3D performance isn't my main concern. I know they're not one of the top performers in that arena, but I haven't heard anything bad. I've seen UT running on a PII 400 with that card, and it does 800x600x16 bit quite nicely. It runs Q3 nicely as well. 2D performance is allegedly unparalleled.

Dude, stop kidding yourself. The situation in Calfornia is due to an overbearing overregulating state government who won't let the industry build new infrastructure because they govern with their emotions instead of their logic, so they end up pandering to idiotic anti free market idiots disguised as "friends of the environment". Anyone that doesn't know this is a complete ignoramus. There's no denying it. Don't be fooled into thinking that what happened there was actually "deregulation". This is a very common misconception. They didn't deregulate the power industry, they just changed the regulations to please both the so-called "environmentally conscious" and John Q. Public, electric customer/clueless voter/registered Democrat. These changes in regulations (labelled "deregulation" to appease the sheep..I mean citizens of California) appeared to be a good thing that would benefit everyone, but as we can see, everyone got screwed - except, of course, the state government. They're rolling in the revenue that comes in due to the bureacracy that they created through the so-called "deregulation".

Heh, you're too kind. Don't even expect your ATI card that's been on the market for awhile to work with an operating system that was released a year and a half ago. They *still* don't have acceptable drivers for my Rage Fury Pro for Windows 2000. It works flawlessly in Windows ME, however. I also have a TV Wonder VE installed in the same machine, and there are some compatibility issues. And it would work fine if I took it out and put my old WinTV card back in. Makes great sense, doesn't it? It's an excellent card for the money hardware-wise, but their software engineers are taking forever to come out with driver updates, because they've got their hands full with the Radeon bullshit. I wrote a letter to ATI outlining exactly why I will not buy their products in the future unless they seriously change their ways, and why they're going to lose money and see their stock price fall because of how they've screwed their customers. I hope, albeit unrealistic, that they get the message and improve their software division, because they do make good hardware. In the future, however, I will be doing business with Matrox, not because their hardware is the top performer, but because their hardware is proven, rock-solid-stable, and because they stand behind and support their products. They obviously listen to their customers, and they support open source. They are a good corporate citizen, and for this, they get rewarded with the cash I put out for their products. Pretty effective system, eh?

Oh..and then there's Matrox, who supports linux better than any other video card manufacturer. Perhaps if you're looking for a very stable card, you'd get a Matrox, but if you're after a product that will be well supported for years to come, then you'd probably want a Matrox. That should give you a few ideas.

Is this how most other Americans see the agreement? Is this the main-stream view put forward by the major media outlets?

My viewpoint is actually in the minority. However, I think that the European media feeds a slightly different angle. From the little I have seen, they try to paint the picture that the U.S. is almost entirely right-wing, and of the same philosophy as myself. I would say that this country is almost exactly half right-wing and half left-wing, (discounting moderates and those who don't pay any attention to politics) and moving to the left. Our mainstream press is for the most part left-wing. They support things like Kyoto, and they criticize president Bush at almost every opportunity. (I will say that in some cases they haven't been as vindictive as I would expect.) I support the president's decision to not sign Kyoto, since I feel that there are serious problems with it (as I pointed out previously). Our media unfortunately has the people seriously believing that this decision was entirely based on the president's tie with oil companies and other corporate interests, and that he doesn't want to cut down on emissions. He's really just watching out for the good of the entire country. I'm certain he would sign a resolution to reduce emissions if it were more reasonable. Kyoto would have certainly had adverse effects on an already ailing economy. Energy costs would skyrocket (thereby increasing the costs of everything else, sending inflation through the roof), loads of jobs would inevitably be lost, and it would basically be a giant mess over a negligible (but costly) reduction in emissions, which would likely have occured anyway through the course of time in a strong economy, from the development of more efficient (and therefore less pollitng) everything. Most of the nations that signed the Kyoto agreement already meet (or almost meet) the outlined standards, and their economies have already adjusted, or are in the process of adjusting to whatever effects it has. (and the effects are likely to be smaller where a nation has a smaller population, GDP, etc.) And this is why I believe that the European aristocracy is just jealous, and wants to level the playing field so they can "feel good" about their environment and have a healthy economy (by comparison) at the same time. I also see it as a vehicle for Socialism to infiltrate the U.S., but that is purely my cynical libertarian point of view.

So to summarize, I don't think that "the U.S. is thumbing its nose at the rest of the western world out of their own selfish self-interest." I'm sure most of the world - including a large portion of this country - believes this, but I don't. I think we're taking a prudent approach, as opposed to a knee-jerk approach to a situation that could potentially screw up a whole lot of things if not clearly thought through.

Thanks for replying, and especially in such a civilized manner. (I was expecting flames.) I apologize for the fact that this post was grammatically cumbersome and difficult to read. Have a good one.

Ok it's homework time. The rest of the world did not sign the Kyoto agreement. China, Brazil, and damn near all of Africa aren't required to sign it, but they pollute far more than the United States. The Kyoto protocol is simply a method of crippling the US economy to level the playing field, because the European governments don't want to admit that the free market economy works, and that any form of socialism doesn't (unless you have a decent amount of tourism and a big capitalist country like the US to rely on) European governments are disgustingly rich, but their citizens mostly aren't. They want to do everything they can to keep it that way, so they must result to tactics like Kyoto that cripple the economies of successful countries so that the masses don't think "Hey, that system works alot better. Why can't we have that?" It is rather unfortunate that the world is largely being run by children.

Somehow, these imbiciles come to the conclusion that the environment suffers alot more when people are spread out over a larger area than when people are tightly packed like sardines, as they are in urban areas. Yes, welcome to the left. Please leave your logic at the door. If you'd like to read more juvenile thought concerning the environment, I would highly recommend Earth in the Balance by Albert Gore, Jr. (ISBN: 0452269350) In this delightful children's book, Al enlightens us about how he thinks we should all live in the smallest spaces possible in dense urban areas, in order to minimize our effect on mother nature. How thoughtful! We might as well ignore the fact that there's enough room for every U.S. citizen to have an entire acre in the state of Texas alone. Idn't that guy just a blessed genius? Hell, he was almost elected president because everyone loved how "environmentally sensitive" he appeared to be. It's a damn shame he lost. I'd much rather be forced to live in a place the size of a jail cell than have the freedom to buy some acreage and spread out. I'd get too greedy with all that land. I'd feel much better if all that land were in the hands of the government. They'd NEVER let it get polluted!
