    then... I want a remote control that accepts voice commands from
    anywhere in my house

    then... I want a remote system to accept voice commands, but also
    understands what noise is coming from the TV/DVD/Stereo and can
    process my voice over the (loud) audio system

    then... I want a remote audio control, background substracted control
    system that does per-user voice authentication and can control my
    home security system

    then... I want all that installed and working flawlessly for under a grand.
    Maybe I should start this as a business?

    ... only then will I have MY holy grail control.

    too bad. space.com is no longer any use to me because of excessive ads.

    which is why I don't code in shell script, and I don't write with all the funky perl modules unless I really care about the code. To do your solution # one would mean I'd have to dig out my book on shell scripts (really) and to do # two would mean reading perl man pages again.

    Is it obvious yet I'm just a pretend coder?

    I use ultraedit all the time (and Linux). In fact old versions of ultraedit work perfectly under wine... but they didn't tear me away from emacs.

    The only reason I can see for NOT wanting open source fpr any software is for near or long term profit motive, either directly from the software, or from related components using the software. If there are others, I'd like to hear them.

    my opinion: given decompilers, and the expertice in the top tier cracking community, hiding sourcef does not prevent people knowing exactly what software is doing -- especially in such a high profile example.

    but if its Java, then it's supposed to be cross platform, right?

    If you were doing it on a Windows box, I'd bet there are lots of tools to capture video. Some even came with my video card.

    I'm a late poster on this thread. I waited all of half a day and there are 450 comments already.

    I'd have to say I'm not convinced at all by the author. Governments ARE using technology to ways predicted by Orwell. Terrorism IS the priamry threat as all the governements of the world get on board with similar, pro-economic views. I see the dirge of steps continue toward 1984 day by day.

    As I break from America's Army Shooting Range (Try number 39 to qualify), I wonder:

    it seems that if I have a wierd (non QWERTY) keyboard layout, I'd have to remap
    the controls on all those games that use keyboard layout for controls (W == forward,
    S== back, A/D for left/right)

    That would get annoying and possibly would eliminate the time savings gained by
    normal typing. Just no way to win.
