Exactly. The Higgs is the Luminiferous Aether with a new name and the same old reasons for believing it exists. Everyone admits the Standard Model is broken, and then in the next breath they say "it's the most accurate theory EVAR" - sure, it's nothing but a list of observations tied together with a list of suppositions. Any theory with 17 independent magic numbers in it and no explanation for WHY they have to have those exact values isn't a theory at all, it's a list of empirical observations. That's not to say that Tevatron and LHC aren't doing good science, or making great observations (and yes, I think they're worth the money) - I'm saying they should stop trying to determine what fabric The Emperor's New Clothes are made of.
I can hardly wait for the day people will be able to use their cell phones on those long haul flights.
As a daily train commuter, whose most hated sound is someone shouting "NO, I'VE GOT PLENTY OF TIME, I'M ON THE TRAIN!" into their cellphone, I can only warn you to be really, really careful what you wish for.
Parent is a case-study in What's Wrong With The New Slashdot. In a proper world (or, if you prefer, in the Elder Days) the AC parent would have AT LEAST cruised up to +3 Informative in as many heartbeats. As it is, this nifty site/tool he's pointed us to will languish in obscurity.
And in case you're wondering at my 'get off my lawn', my REAL Slashdot UID is in the low 800Ks, but contains a special character, so I haven't been able to log in to this Brave New Slashdot for over a month.
I'm the 'IT guy' for an office of about a dozen people. And when I say IT guy, I mean I'm the only one here who can use google well enough to figure out how to make things work...
Every time I read about one of these planned cities, I'm reminded of Walt Disney's original concept for the Experimental Prototype Community Of TomorrowEPCOT - not the theme park it became after he died. The original idea was damn visionary - take a look at the Wikipedia article, or here. The idea was a community where people lived and worked - I don't know what the word is - synergistically? Certainly a decent first crack at a practical corporate utopia. It makes me really angry that it became a 'ride' instead.
That would be great! I've always wondered where Superman came from. And I'm really looking forward to the trading card duel between Batman and the Joker. And the battle between the Justice League and the Decepticons should be EPIC!!!
They're saying that the moon stabilizes the axial tilt wobble, so the climate doesn't change drastically (over loooong periods of time), so therefore life would have time to evolve, which is an interesting notion. However, I thought it was generally accepted that the moon's tidal effect on the oceans (literally "the tides") was one of the big contributors to the emergence of life. Seems they're hand-waving that part.
So you're saying a Windows Mobile Phone is like a Small Lump of Green Putty I Found in My Armpit One Midsummer Morning?

I can see from your sig that you're not easily swayed by pesky things like FACTS, but I'll try, anyways.

Amusing use of the word "weather". ICWUDT
If you post copyrighted material on YouTube, then the terrorists win. QED.

Chill. Take two tablets of acetylsalicylic acid with a glass of hydric acid and wait for the palpitations to pass.
I've been running a MUCH larger DNA-based computational circuit for YEARS now! Course, sometimes it fails me completely.

Marketing Speak: there's no genuine advantage in it.

Here you go. (SFW)
It didn't today, either.
I just had a timecube moment.

Yeah. It's so word for word for word cut-n-paste, it didn't even include links to the or the VLT homepage. But, as GP said, at least it's accurate.
Shechita or not, pigs and lobsters ain't kosher.
