Thank God I just saw the goatse.cx thing in the status bar as I clicked, or I might have gotten an up close view of that thing. For anybody else who got their by accident, close your eyes, and put your hand over them. You should be able to view out the bottom. Slowly look up the screen to the tasklist, and close the window. This assumes you have set up your tasklist at the bottom of the screen.

Come on, +5. I could understand if this bashing didn't happen with Gnome, but it just did, right on their website. And will you tell me the last few Gnome articles that didn't have tons of flames directed towards Gnome. TT deserved almost every flame, since most of them were legit complaints on their lack professionalism.

  3. Any competition in the next few years? on nVidia GeForce 2 Ultra Unveiled · · Score: 1

I badmouthed NVidia so bad last year and early this year, for not producing a decent Linux driver, I really would hate to buy a card from them. The problem is that they seem so dominant over all other cards makers, not in market, but in product quality.

Next this year, when I buy some new 3d card, it seems that a GeForce2 MX at $150 would be a steal. Will any other company make a chip that will be competitive in price and quality? It's scary:)

The only way I could buy an NVidia card now, and keep my pride, is if they made a public apology to me, and only me, or if they Open Sourced their drivers. That way I could be like "yea, when I say change, they changed".

Unless all the lambasters posts have been modereted to below one before I came, the only complaints have been legit ones about the price.

Also, let me be the first to bitch, saying that NVidia took a long ass time to make linux drivers, and once they did (around june of 99), it took then almost a year to update them. Yea, they had excuses, like no DRI, but they could have at least updated with a fix to for Xscreensaver's problems.
More importantly than that, as a former paying customer for their products, I don't wan't, excuses, I wan't results. Becuase they couldn't deliver in a timely fashion, they lost a customer (well, probably more than just me).
Ok, a little dramatic there, but the Voodoo3 will last me fine until something better than the NVidia products come out.

    2. I thought the NVidia drivers were almost as fast as the windows drivers, at least according to tom's hardware. Since it would be on a TV, you could run it at low resolutions, so it shouldn't be a problem.

    3. I can't imagine a linux platform being harder to code than a platform were you have to do everything in assembly (most other consoles). Hell, maybe you don't have to program in assembly for dreamcast and playstation, but in a few years, if the any of those consoles takes off, programmers would probably have to do assembly, to get the most out of it, like all sucsesful platforms.

Helix Gnome crashed all over the place for me. Applets crashed, gmc crashed whenever I dragged some icon to the desktop, gtop crashed as soon as I started it, panel crashed when adding new applets and such, it just wasn't that good, even when I got the package updates.

    Solution: rm -rf ~/.gnome*
I deleted all of my old gnome configuration files, (which were from 1.0 releases), and everything is fine.

  8. He probably didn't expect much from sales. on Linux Games Not Selling · · Score: 1

It's not like he predicted the Linux version to account for 30% of sales or something. QTest3 for linux accounted for about 2.5% of QTest3 players playing on servers. So he expected maybe 2-5% of Q3 sales would be for the linux version. I say 5% because you would think the game wouldn't have much competition on linux, and linux users would actually buy the game, becuase they would try to present the platform well, unlike windows users who know they will get games no matter what.

Instead of excuses, I wanna know how much he thought the linux version of Q3 would sell, how much it did actually sell, and what percent of Q3 players on the servers are using the linux version.

Well, it's not my fault, I bought the Linux version and just the Linux version. I can wait a few weeks.

Also, considering that nvidia took so damn long to make decent driver for linux, I might not trust them to keep it up to date. I mean, they could have had a fix for the no double-buffering in xscreensaver, but they didn't bother to post it (it was fixed in the utah-glx distro of that driver.)
