    From the article:

That said, approximately half of the Debian Woody archive has been compiled for the Hurd. This includes most development tools and noteworthy programs such as XFree86.

    From Debian's website:

Debian GNU/Linux ... comes with more than 3950 packages

While I would agree that Linux is more capable in total software packages, I think the HURD also has hundreds of software packages that you can pop on and will run.

I don't think its as bad as you make it sound.

You would still need to be doing real time compression, otherwise before you finished compressing the first days video (i.e. if it took more than 24 hours), you would get the second days video to compress.

As far as I can see, Wine should be equated to libc, xlibs, etc and the ELF loader, instead of to something like VMWare.

Try reseating the heatsink. A couple of friends and I have all had the experience where the system runs at 60-70c until we take the heatsink off, clean the processor and heatsink, reaply the thermal goo. Then the systems seem to run at 40-50c.

Just be careful when doing this as it is a little too easy to damage the processor.

Don't get me wrong, Linux has a long way to go to offer a viable alternative for the average luser. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of people take a second look at MacOS and Linux after tangling with XP.

I'm using XP (Pro) now, and its the best OS that MS has done by a long way (fast, stable etc.). I think lots of users are going to love it - especially compared to their experience with all previous MS OS's. Don't think that XP in its self (forget about pricing) is going to users away from MS - probably much the opposite.

I would recommend trying PostgreSQL again. Relatively recently (v7.0 and v7.1) there were some major improvements in terms of speed at least. As to setting up PostgreSQL (i.e. create and configure a database), it is very easy, once used to it, and the documentation is pretty good (http://www.postgresql.org/idocs/ ).

Does RAND licensing discriminate against developers working in countries that allow patents on software and mathetical methods? It would seem very hard, if not impossible, to make RAND, reasonable and non-discriminatory on a world wide basis.

e.g. Wouldn't a US software developer would be at a greater disadvantage to a UK developer because of higher licensing fees?

For general purpose office apps a p233 is not significantly slower unless you have a very fast hard drive, compared to a 1Ghz PC. As long as you have enough memory in the 233 (128MB or 192MB and greater it seems).

When I recently upgraded my p233, although the speed increase made everything a little more comfortable, in normal use its nothing that made me go 'wow'.

I don't think for todays office apps, anything much greater than a p233 is/should be necessary. A p75 w/ MS Office 2K and win95 is generally very usable.

I wouldn't start blaming a p233 when nautilus has optimisation issues (though, which look to be getting sorted out).

Theres already a work around for product activation, so unless MS changes it between RC2 and the final, its already been 'cracked'.

I've seen a friend use XP. It's slick, stability has been good (the only problems were linked to a Via chipset and USB), and on his Duron 750, fast (although this should be expected). All those extras that they bundle are also very nice and convenient for the user - of course, that could be taking a short term view.

One thing I have noticed with NT 5.x is that initial memory usage is quite high (in Win2K it seems to be about 60MB on boot), but after that memory usage is *extremely* good (apps and OS) and RAM isn't easily consumed (compared to win9x).
