A small company I do some work for has their entire internal network set up using IPs that -should- be out on the internet, but are NATed off. I think the block properly belongs to the University of Toronto.
Granted, the network's a mess in a lot of other ways, but this one is one that always gets my goat. The response? "Yes, it's not right, but it works fine and hasn't caused any problems yet".
Wouldn't it make more sense to opensource it when they get into that final support-only phase? Why spend money maintaining software after you've stopped selling it?
Not quite... You're talking about the diference between software engineering (which is a fancy way to say 'coder') and CS. The original question is the difference between CS and computer engineering ( a subspecies of electrical engineer )
Right.. How many middle-class white kids do you know that play polo? I think the only exposure most Americans get to polo is when it's used as a backdrop in a movie to show how obscenely rich the characters are.
Great, then we end up with a situation like there was in Detroit... The Big 3 churning out products that are virtually indistinguishable and of questionable quality, relying on tradition and brand recognition to ensure their share of the market.
Then we get to wait until some new foreign company wants to come in and do things right...
What's this? Multiple First Posts in the last week have been (at least somewhat) worthwhile. Did Natalie Portman go down to the Bahamas with the Penis Bird as consultants on the Beowulf they're building?
Does this get moderated down, since the poster admits to using a M$ product, or does is get moderated up since it's knocking M$ (in some small way) by talking about their inability to make an usable website?
It all sounds great, except for the bit about doing Java under BSD. While BSD may be technically superior to Linux in many (most?) areas, Java support isn't one of them. Hell, as of last month, aside from running a Linux distro of the JDK under emulation, there was no way to do Java2 development under BSD.
Using AOL CD's would be good. I swear I must have 100's of them....
but then I microwaved most of them..
Can you say "Fried Chicken"?

um... would you really want to go outside in that thing during a rain shower. You'd turn up crispier than KFC's Extra Crispy chicken. The bad thing would be that you wouldn't taste as good.
Jacket of wires
ask, "would you wear it outside"?
not in thunderstorms
Power supplies supply 12V, 5V and 3V power. It's the sum of the wattages available on these 3 lines that gets stamped on the PSU.

So... the claims that the test is 'racist' are really just people pissed that it actually works?

anime rox!! blue sub #6 looks like it will be cool. So when are they going to make an all toonami channel???
While the PaperClip imagery is rather entertaining, wouldn't it be more appropriate to make reference to Eudora?

does that have anything to do with the Vulcan mind meld?? Is it were a Vulcan does a mind meld with a machine??
It wouldn't surprise me if it WAS a lump of snot. It wouldn't surprise me the least bit...

I'm calling my bookie on the odds here.
There's a reason it's called the BSD ports system. This argument is like saying that RPM's are bad because they don't work under Irix and VMS.
After all those years running around in the little robot suit, being canned should come as no big surprise to Mr. Baker

That would be a nice...
At this rate, by the time I graduate, that's what I'll have to do so that I don't get busted for doing anything 'illegal'
I only wish for half of that, heck, even a third of that. Is that too much to ask?

Machines are the way to go. NASA, obviously, should send out space drones that run linux. The only question is, do they run Red Hat, or Debian?
