    It is assumed in this day and age that you already have a BS/BA degree. If you want to stand out from the stack of resumes from laid-off tech school IT workers, you need a higher degree.

    Paper does work best. I have lots of hardware I could use, but I still take good notes and use a Sony digital recorder.

    The best part about using a spiral notebook is it continues to function normally after being dropped.

    Think about it. You got a intel chipset mobo running Cisco software off of flash. I know some cisco guys....this isn't rocket science. Running openbsd or linux and following prudent concepts will get you the same thing.

    Just because it says "Cisco PIX" doesn't mean it was hatched from a daemon's ass and is the best. At work, I use them. Great service and reliable performance. At home, openbsd.
    That compact openbsd idea sound like a good start.

    If you live near Seattle, then the best source for used racks of all sizes is Boeing Surplus. They have singles, doubles, and triples and lots of hardware. Halfs are rare. Most are $50-100.

    Most are in good shape and blue. I have a single in my garage and run everything remote.
