Heh reminds me of an UPS (one of the little single PC ones) we had at work once. One day the thing failed (can't remember how we knew this). We tried to pull out the battery to check it but it wouldn't come out. After struggling for quite a while, we got it out and the whole side of the thing was bulging like crazy (all those circles on the bottom were popping out and stuff) and it was hot as hell. Made us wonder how close we came to having the thing blow up on us.

Scary thing is that the battery was so hot that it felt warm for hours.

Yeah, it sucks when you lose, but that's why you need to have enough control to quit when you're ahead (and more importantly, quit when you hit a hard limit so you don't end up leaving with nothing - it's a long walk thru the desert back home from Vegas)

For some reason I tend to do well in Nevada casinos (Vegas and Tahoe) but I always lose my money at Indian casinos in CA. But for Christ's sake don't bet more than you would be willing to drive home without.

The check stays good for an hour or two.

I've never run a system that did that (never had to), but as an end user, it's certainly no trouble for me at all. And it keeps be from getting blacklisted or anything.

  17. Re:But do they NEED it? on USB 2 Devices Not Necessarily High-Speed · · Score: 4, Interesting

Ok, fwiw, I work for a company that designs USB 2 device controllers....

The standard does allow low-,full-, and high-speed devices. Why is this a bad thing? The hardware for a high-speed (480Mbps) device is SIGNIFIGANTLY more complex than that of a full- or low-speed device. The chips are more expensive and the layout issues for making a board work with high-speed mean it's really not worth the effort for anything that doesn't really need it.

The standard is fine (in that respect, anyway...). What would be nice, however, if there was a more obvious naming scheme (if someone had asked me if a full-speed or high-speed device was faster before I made a career out of it, I probably wouldn't have known...) and if when a device got logo certified by the USB-IF they got assigned either different logo based on speed.

That said, every USB device I've used lately has said on the box which speed it was (full, high, or low)

Your worth (financial, not that warm and fuzzy happiness type) is what someone is willing to pay. Now if the other guy thinks you're worth less than you think you do, you're not gonna be happy, don't take that offer.

The rest came from financial aid. I got about 5k/year in grants and I now owe a fuckload in student loans. Yeah, I'll be writing checks to the feds for many years to come, but it seemed like a worthwhile investment.

Was there some technicality so your parents seemed to have the money to pay for you so you didn't get approved? (although the solution to that is to file independent) or were your HS grades bad? (I don't think that usually matters for anything but grants, though...)
