    Exactly. Most non-techies don't give it much thought and therefore don't care. Welcome to the real world.

    You and I both know that they should give it some thought, because it does matter. Good luck with trying to convince the general public. I gave up long ago.

    I never understood this. Is the BSA a legally recognised law enforcement agency in the US? I can understand OSHA having the right to check out your business premises, but what law says you have to let the BSA in?
    If so, who bought that law? I sure hope my government doesn't pass the same law in order to get free trade with the US.

    This is like the behaviour of drug dealers.
    Drug dealers and the IT industry both refer to their customers as users and both give stuff away for free until you become dependent on their product, then they charge rapaciously.

    Are you thinking of the e-govt guidelines?
    AFAIK they are guidelines for government websites. Private websites can be accessable to whoever they like and block who they like. I could create a site that only works in browsers supporting XUL if I wanted to.

    The big problem is people *assuming* everyone has MS-Word, and using its proprietary format to exchange information by default.

    Yes! That's one of my pet hates.
    (My other pet hate is apostrophes in possessive pronouns :-P )
    I've managed to get job interviews after sending resumés as PDFs.

    Hmm. As long as oowriter and abiword can interchange files, and oocalc and gnumeric can interchange files, then freedom from (MS) vendor lock-in is a real possibility.

    Do abiword and gnumeric read/write .sxw and .sxc files? The formats are open so there's no reason why not.

    I think all three, OOo, abiword and gnumeric are important, but it would be better still if they all share an open document format.

    Just some random thoughts.

    A good way for the company to hike-up their bandwidth bill, and make things slower for users.

    Not if they have a proxy server between the internal LAN and the outside.

    No MAME games are included with the knoppixmame downlowd from sourceforge, but you can add games to the ISO. Now, to keep it legal, you just gotta find some royalty-free games. Not all copying is infringment.
