Yes, it is not free, but the problem is not there:
1. To incorporate CSS in your DVD player, you need the approval from MPAA 2. To incorporate MPEG-2 in your DVD player, you need to pay a fee to the MPEG consortium.
Granted the MPEG-2 doesn't help, but the real reason we don't have a player for Linux has to do 10% because of the fee, 90% because the MPAA will *never* grant a license to the free software community to use CSS.
I don't see EVD being much of a issue outside of China You are right, it is not.
Unless China wants to spend $100 million (or more) marketing the new format to Western consumers You don't get it, they want to adopt it for their internal market.
Even in China, it will be an uphill battle Unless the government ban all other media. Don't forget also that almost zero DVD players are out there in China. At best, they have VCD players.
I don't see why Chinese consumers would buy the more expensive format, unless they are Patriotic and have money to burn I think the whole point is to make this new media cheaper than a DVD player. This new format is there to avoid all the licensing fees attached to the DVD.
Also, I'd bet that media production has reached critical mass for DVD No in China
How will China convince pressing plants to adapt to EVD If it's the only way to commercialize a movie in China, they will.
Yes, but that proves one thing still: Humans can apply different strategy against different opponents, computers have yet to do that. I think Kasparov would have applied a different strategy playing a human player. That is something a computer is not capable of.
Plus, Kasparov lost the first game and then learned his opponent strategies, another thing computers are not capable of.
Dude, Apple doesn't support 3 years old softwares or hardware. Nor does Red Hat. Nor does anyone in the "All purpose general public" market, but Microsoft. Granted, they don't support it in every way you could think of, but god dammit, they do and everyone is bashing at them for this very reason. I thought that was one of the only positive points to be given to Microsoft.
I don't know anymore. Is/. just about bashing Microsoft without even thinking?
I mean, Exchange 5.5 is about 6 years old right now. No one would expect any changes to a 6 years old product from any company. But for Microsoft, it is ok to bash them because they don't fix it?
Well, if my sister kills my parents to get her share of the inheritance, it is obviously my duty to tell the Police about her crime right? And gently get her share of the money as well... So I would benefit from a crime, yes.
It is really inexcusable for a company that claims security is its top priority
This is a joke right? I mean, as much as I dislike Microsoft, it would be good to stop free and blank bashing like that. So now, two weeks after they have announced that they will focus security, old security holes (you know, those made before the change in policy) suddenly becomes inexcusable... Pitiful.
It's a little like having bought an UltraSPARC last week and then bashing at Sun tomorrow saying: "This machine doesn't run an AMD opteron. This is inexcusable for a company that claims that they have such a big agreement with AMD..."
Come on guys, they have so many holes to fill, it'll take some time!
That's what we mean by "Reply". Most spams ask you to fill a form online with some personnal infos. Just fill it in with creduble garbage. If every slashdotter does that, they'll be flooded with junk response to their junk emails. The idea is that if they send us garbage, you can send it back to them.
Of course, giving the number of spam in my inbox, it's going to take a while. But hopefully, after a while of this replies, they'll get tired of sorting out the real consumers from the pile of junk they receive end will stop sending it. Of course, that's the theory.
I don't really think so. Let's say every slashdotter respond to one SPAM today. That'll be 250k emails back for those suckers who usually get a few hundreds. I think they'll think twice about sending all the crap to their contacts in the U.S. I mean, mortgage company is used to pay them $500/day is going to get served 25k emails and is going to owe them $1.25M. I don't think they are going to see any green stuff this day...
Well, I agree with you that in your case, there is no crime. The article linked mentionned a website threatening the girl to death. Of course, we should not send the guy to jail for that, but I still think a reminder exposing him publicly and reminding him that when you do something stupid you get caught cannot do any harm!
Well, that's a nice theory, but in this case the problem was that the girl didn't even know who did it! Does she have to beat the kids up?
Cyberbullying is another problem entirely. When you see an embarrasing picture of you broadcasted to all emails of your classmates, there is very little you can do to catch the sender, as you don't even know who he is...
I do believe we need a cyberpolice that would have the right (with an appropriate warrant-like paper) to get IPs of any user in a reasonnable timeframe span - say 6 month back. but that is another problem altogether. Anonymity is not good crime-wise. Granted these bullies are not really criminals, but that is still something we should investigate and get back to them with all the force of the legal system to scare them and make them understand once and for all that their actions have consequences, and that they hould think about those prior to doing anything stupid.
They didn't say nude pictures!!! The kid picking its nose or doing other weird stuff is very embarrassing too. At this age, pretty much everything is embarrassing!
1. overheating issues with OEM heatsink/fans I guess they can replace the OEM's fans with some better ones. One might even think that they would ship some better HS/F for such a big partner.
2. fans locking up Hmmm. See 1. I still don't see how this is a big problem.
3. motherboard chipsets frying Well, bad motherboard. Don't put the blame on AMD, but on the Mobo manufacturer.
4. AGP slot working I don't this this is going to be any issue on a server. Plus, see 3.
5. etc... Well, I guess the "etc" includes the real problems then. Care to elaborate?
an, this is terrible. I can barely afford to RTFA most of the times, where exactly do you want me to find 3 hours to view these videos?? My boss is going to kill me!
Well, they have nothing to fix since they didn't break anything. right? right? They released a software that doesn't work with the oldest iPods, where exactly is the big deal?
Well, there is another wonderful thing about the internet: Don't believe everything you see. Much of it is just crap, evil lies or blatant exagerations. This story, IMO, is of the third kind.
If from one user telling you that Apple support told them "Fuck You", you believe that it is the corporate position of the company, then keep on reading and believing slashdot. And if you think that it is fair to have stories popping up about it all over, then you're just not better.
Nothing caused it to stop working. It's just that you CANNOT play the MP3s you upload to your iPod by using the PC software. That's all. You'll also noticed that when this guy bought his iPod, no support was there for PC.
So, it is not breaking anything, really. It is just that iTunes for PC is incompatible with older iPods. That's what I don't like in this misleading headline! It shouldn't be "iTunes for Windows Breaking Older iPods" byt "iTunes for Windows Incompatible With Older iPods".
Well, the problem is slightly different than for a toothbrush. There are cross-support and defect involved. If your toothbrush had a defect and the replacement would have been as bad as your original one, I guess (hope) they would not have sent you another one.
Let's take an example: I call the sony customer service, saying that I installed their beta driver for their digital camera for FreeBSD for which they offer no warranty at all and it doesn't work... Would they send me a new camera for free? Not sure.
This is easy, it makes a great story! User X called their support and expected them to say "Sure, we'll ship you a new one in express mail". That is just not how it works. If they said that to every end-user calling, they would be bankrupt for a long time.
Instead, they have to stay firm at the lower level while the problem escalates the hierarchy and gets finally solved. That's life, but the slashdot editors don't seem to realize it. If one guy at the Apple support was in a bad mood and trash talked a customer, you immediately have a story on the front page: "Apple says 'Fuck You' To All Customers".
Yes, it is not free, but the problem is not there:

Fritz was trained from Kasparov's games
Hence, Fritz is disturbed when Kasparov changes its strategy and start playing a different kind of game. It cannot adapt.
Harder + New = More Expensive
That's the basic rule of the market...
I don't see EVD being much of a issue outside of China
You are right, it is not.
Unless China wants to spend $100 million (or more) marketing the new format to Western consumers

No in China

Geesh just look at what you gotta go through to watch DVD's under linux
AFAIK, the impossibility to view a DVD under Linux is due to the CSS problems, not the MPG/MP3 problems.
tapes to become common over LP
That has, as far as I know, never really/fully happened. LPs had a better reliability than tapes for pre-recorded media. CD replaced LP, not the tape.
"it did beat him"
Yes, but that proves one thing still: Humans can apply different strategy against different opponents, computers have yet to do that. I think Kasparov would have applied a different strategy playing a human player. That is something a computer is not capable of.

I used Slashdot as a last resort
That's called spreading FUD. Thanks for participating in this great humanitarian task.

Bah, I'll just talk my ass off, as usual.
