Wow. What a short-sighted overgeneralization. Do you work for the New York Times? You're obviously qualified...
"Therefore I have no problem viewing ads and will never use an ad blocker."
Cool. Want a cookie?
I have no desire to block Google's ads, which are by all accounts the most effective around. If ads weren't annoying "PUNCH MY MONKEY!" flash BS, I probably wouldn't bother to block them.
I'd certainly say that stealing from "starving artists" is worse than stealing from "fat cat recording industry flacks".
The cost to the artist of music piracy is lost in the noise. It's almost un-measurable. The cost to the RIAA's members is not of interest to me. If they can't make their business model work, they need to change it.
Who is responsible if my automated car crashes? I absolutely believe that we could decrease the number of automotive fatalities by automating highway travel. However, I guarantee that every one of those fatalities would be accompanied by a lawsuit, even if the system is designed as well as can be. Systems fail, accidents happen, unforseen circumstances are unforseen, and some folk are gon' die. How do we indemnify the implementors of this system against undue legal problems, and how do we pursue irresponsible implementors and maintainers?
This is complicated stuff, and it's a totally not-technical problem.

Computers are faster than you are.
You can't fly an F-16 without a flight control computer. Seat of the pants doesn't do you any good when the airplane doesn't know which end to keep into the wind.
You might argue that overly intrusive computer controls detract from the driving experience, but I don't agree for a second that computers in cars are categorically bad. If the yaw control in the 911 Turbo keeps you from spinning your car off the Nurburgring, that's Good.
Now, Microsoft operating systems in cars are CERTAINLY in that "categorically bad" category. I'll never understand what possessed BMW to go to Microsoft to get their iDrive user interface.
"Communism can only work if it's compulsory and worldwide."
That's the poster's point, and that's what I'm arguing against. I didn't say that communism must be compulsory and worldwide, I did say that IF that is the case, THEN Communism is Bad.
I thought that Mos Def nailed Ford Prefect in about ten seconds. I liked Zaphod as well. Arthur was great, and Trillian was, well, around way too much. I could really have done without the love story, although Zooey Deschanel is easy to look at.
I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. I didn't think for a moment that they'd do the sperm whale joke, but they did. I was happy.
If Konfabulator used as few system resources as Dashboard does, I'd still be using it.
And, yes, I did pay for it. Unfortunately.
If Konf has a good system, it will continue to sell. Since it isn't, it won't. But, they probably don't care about the Mac market anymore. Haven't seen much development since they released the Windows port...
"I will lose my money because of what someone else did"
Such is life. Would you be complaining if it were the other way around, and people were willing to pay lots of money for your "dump" when everybody else on the street has maintained their homes nicely?
"(although to be honest, it seems like it would be nice sometimes)"
Wow. Tyranny with a well-manicured lawn.
"I do however believe in basic area regulations, whether legally enforced or simply by good manners, to protect the others around me and myself too."
As long as those regulations are spelled out in detail before I buy my property, I must agree to them as a condition of the sale. If you want to come back after I've made the purchase and de-value MY home (by removing my ability to do with it as I will), you can stuff it.
What if my next door neighbor wanted to put a satellite dish on his roof? What if she wanted to paint her house a tasteful shade that didn't happen to be in the Approved Palette?
I won't be paying $umptyhundredthousand dollars to move into a place where other people get veto authority on what I do.
If you don't have a contract with your neighbors, then you don't have any say over what they do.
This case is even more clear-cut. He's renting his property to somebody who wants to put a cellular tower on it, providing services to hundreds of thousands of people. And those people want him to, out of the goodness of his heart, forego that money.
Even sadder that the reason it won't happen, is because the plan was endorsed by Newt Gingrich.

I'm under no obligation whatsoever to put my eyes on those ads. "Ethical"? "Fair"? What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?
If they don't want me to see the site, they'll put up a password. If they don't password protect it, I'll edit it to my liking.
Just because you're free to speak doesn't mean I have to listen to you.

But they are so I will.
"give you something so good that you are forced to shut up and revisit your position because of their innovations."
Wouldn't know. Never seen it happen.
Well said. My subjective non-expert opinion is that you're right and your post's parent is wrong.
And since I'm always right, that means you're right. : )
Aha. So it creates the journals, you just can't DO anything with them.
If it were anybody other than Microsoft, I'd be surprised.
Sho' can't wait for them to make my car stop crashing, though! That'll be FAB!
Dude.
Decaf.
Seriously.
I'd certainly say that stealing from "starving artists" is worse than stealing from "fat cat recording industry flacks".

I'm sorry, I must have completely missed the corporate oligarchy part. I learned how to tie knots, and do first aid.
What kind of Boy Scout troop were YOU in?
That $100,000 doesn't cover liability, though.

Yeah, those darn sales guys allowing people to, like, buy stuff. I can see why you're annoyed.
not.
Talk to Apple. Bet they'll hook you up.
Have they received it yet?
If not, I betcha they'll get the new gear.
In other news, computers get faster and cheaper as time goes on. Wow...who knew?
"offers 'a distributed, decentralised database that can be used to track decentralised torrents. "
Wait, but is it decentralis[z]ed AND distributed?
Department of redundancy department...

How do you do it? I dunno. How does MacOS X do it? That way seems pretty darn bulletproof.
It is, therefore, Bad.
If your philosophy requires my buy-in in order to work, it's not a very good philosophy.
Get back to me when that's even a remotely possible scenario.

Nonsense. MD is Maryland, and anybody who suggests otherwise is obviously a terrorist.
(note: This is a joke.)
Wow.
I wish I had your CPU. Konf spanks my 1.33 gHz Powerbook.

I say screw 'em.
