Wow, if you don't understand why you shouldn't spend $200/share on Google, you really need to not be giving investment advice to, like, anybody.
Hint: The reason to not buy Google is NOT "I don't have $200 for a share!". The reason to not buy Google is "$200 is far more than a 1/N share of Google is worth!" (Where N is the number of shares in the universe).
It's very easy for me to imagine a peripheral with the same footprint designed to stack under the mini and attache via Firewire. I am willing to wager there will be large-capacity hard drives with the same form factor.
There have been Mac-designed (although not Mac-specific) peripherals for years. With the mini likely outselling any other Apple model ever, I don't see the peripheral makers ignoring that.
"The problem I see with DRM is that it's impossible to make it work without breaking either existing compatability or fair-use."
From the perspective of the people in this consortium, that's not a problem. That's the POINT. You're supposed to buy new instances of the content for each of those things you used to be able to do for free.
They hate "fair use", because to them, "fair" means that nobody sees their goods without paying them.
I know the REAL way to make money off of this deal. Come up with the next acronym, and copyright it. I'm becoming more convinced that there's a savant somewhere with a serial port grafted into their skull who comes up with all these damn things.
Had I been able to use the MD as a data drive, I'd have owned one years ago. Sony could have kicked the crap out of Iomega, but they didn't bother. They had a data MD drive, but it was obscenely expensive.
They screwed up, and didn't create a product people wanted. Now they're sad about it. Oh well.
There is no OGG boat. Just a bunch of geeks that have tied themselves together in a human raft, trying to convince people "We're a boat! Really!"
OGG is a great format, that was too little too late. It may be "better" from a technical or philosophical perspective, but MP3 is un-intrusive and competent enough for the overwhelming majority of meat-sacks.
If you're waiting for a sea-change where everybody discovers "OGG!" don't hold your breath.
Uh...what does that have to do with my contention?
You know what? Never mind. Until I am satisfied that you're not a troll, I'm not going to spend any more time on this discussion. I'm not learning anything, and I'm sure you aren't either.
I'm not arguing about taxes. I'm arguing about suspending the writ of habeas corpus. I'm talking about secret courts. I'm talking about "justice" being dispensed under seal, not open for the public's inspection.
I'm talking about an attorney general who thinks torturing people is OK.
THAT is wrong. That is illegal, and unethical, and immoral, and mark one mod zero EVIL. And it's what passes for government in the United States today.
It is illegal to smoke pot. It is not wrong to smoke pot. I do not smoke pot, regardless.
"Apollo and Soyuz do not use horizontal landing either."
Yeah, but they use parachutes. Remember those? The other thing I mentioned that are a better idea than Flash Gordon?
"The fuel is cheap."
Weight is not. The fuel you propose to use for landing is fuel you have to accelerate to orbital insertion speed, and then decelerate on your retro-burn back into the atmosphere.
"Most of the cost in reusable space launch today is not fuel, but design and maintenance costs"
Yup. It's a rule of thumb in the industry that heavy craft are more expensive to design and maintain than light craft. Ask any aeronautical engineer. Like me.
Runways and landing gear are trivial. Parachutes work great. Vertical rocket-borne landing is good for stunts, and for landing on places with no atmosphere. Anywhere else, it is not optimal.
"and can our personality..."
There is no "our personality". If you think you're part of a hive mind, you need to not think that anymore.

*shudder*
I'm one of those guys that just starts twitching when people talk about vi. I hate it so much...
vi? On a Mac?
I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. The aesthetic concerns are...concerning.
I hope you're right. But, without cooperation of the Bigs, Apple's music efforts will be much less profitable.
"and the knowledge that my code will be run by millions of people, "
Whether they like it or not....
That "fwoosh"ing sound was the joke going over your head.

I got the Apple In-Ear headphones (because they fit me better than the Sonys) and they sound as good as I could ever want them to.
I don't want earth-shaking bass. If I want my music to sound better than it does on my iPod, I'll sing it myself.
Just because there are more features, doesn't mean they're well implemented.
It's not hard to imagine operating the shuffle while it's in my pocket. (huh huh) I do that now with my clickwheel iPod.
I'll leave the masturbation jokes as an exercise for the class.
Design==great.
Implementation==not so much.

How much music does Apple produce? Not much.
People want the content. At the end of the day, the content providers will have a lot of power to dictate the standards.

*gets out ruler*
My 40G iPod is 1.5 cm thick, approximately. I was just bagging on your metric system. Nuthin' personal. : )

"It's also about the same exact size as an iPod, only maybe a centimeter thicker."
Wow. More than twice as thick, but it's about the same size. Riiight...

So I don't have to jack with it on every computer I install.
It's a convenience that saves me time.

I don't care.
: )
It won't dry until after you get your security deposit back. *sly grin*

Now you're getting it.
Hint: If the WTO likes it, you probably won't.
