Who are you to decide what is and is not necessary, and what should or should not be tech?
Don't like it? Cool. Don't use it. I don't have a cell phone. I DO have a PDA, and I think all the people who say "Why don't you just use a piece of paper?" don't understand what I use my PDA for.
Do my choices measurably affect yours? No? Then my choices are none of your business. Repeat this exercise for every other Earth-dweller.
All the more reason to doubt Costco as a reliable vendor, particularly compared to Apple, who has one of the longest track records in the business. Even if they do get "beleaguered" all the time.
I can't believe I'm even having this conversation. I say we let all the mouth breathers that want to buy their computers from Costco do so. And then we point and laugh as said computers halt and catch fire.
It seems pretty cut and dried to me: It is easier to hit an infinitely tall target than a finitely-tall target. What's to disagree about?
I've never heard of XFce4, so I can't say things one way or another about it. But Nielsen and the Apple engineers have a really good rationale for doing things the way they did them, and I'd be pretty stunned to find another outfit that had done similar amounts of study and engineering on the subject.
With the possible exception of the Air Force, but they're not talking.
There's a very specific reason that the Apple menu bar is at the top, rather than in the window.
The menus essentially have infinite height. You only have to align your mouse on the left-right axis to hit the menu...you don't also have to hit a finite height target. It's much better from a muscle memory perspective. The menu bar is always in the same place, and it's always at the top.
You ought to read Apple's human interface design docs. They really are superb.
Hmmm...I wonder if I can use my hands to manipulate objects in three dimensions. What an interesting idea. I wonder where I'm going to find a three-dimensional coordinate system to play around with. I'm going to have to think really hard about this.
Many 3D modelling pros use a left-hand controller for six-axis control of the object they're working on, and a mouse in their right hand. It's not as confusing as you might think.
Well, gosh! Thanks for expressing it again! I'm far too stupid to have figured that out myself. Thanks for shining your bewildering light of wisdom into my teeny teeny brain.
Because Apple doesn't want people to buy a system, use it for a year, and give it back. Then Apple has to deal with a used computer.
I guaran-damn-tee you that if Costco was just selling computers, they wouldn't have that 365 day return policy. Considering that they probably sell one or two of these boxes per store per day, it's a miniscule fraction of their revenue. That policy would kill Apple.
Wow. I'd have thought they'd have run out of bullets from shooting themselves in the foot with the first gen product. I stand corrected.

I'd like to see statistical, rather than anecdotal, comparisons of Apple's quality versus other name-brand PC vendors.
Which the Costco brand wouldn't be.
Just because you happen to have heard of problems with Apple hardware doesn't mean that it's worse than other vendors'. My (personal, anecdotal, and non-scientific) experience with Apple hardware is superb. All the data I've seen seem to support that contention.
What kind of track record does your Costco vendor have? What, you've never heard of them? Hmm...imagine.

Hmm. I wonder whether the build quality of the computer you got at FUCKING COSTCO is anywhere near the same as Apple's.
Unrealistic male stereotypes don't count. Only unrealistic FEMALE stereotypes are insulting.
I've never found a character in any sort of fiction that's "like me". I see parts of myself in numerous characters, and see numerous characters I'm nothing like. However, somehow, I've managed to develop into a well-adjusted human being anyhow. There is NO REASON that any other man or woman on Earth couldn't do the same thing. There's nothing special about me.
The first time I played it through, I decided to play a goody-two-shoes female character. I really enjoyed the writing that went into the subtle sexual tension between my character and Carth. I thought that was a really nice piece of adaptive fiction.
Until I played through again as an evil, tough-as-nails bald male mercenary, and had the same touchy-feely "getting to know you" conversations. [lisp]He was so sensitive.[/lisp] Sorta blew away my suspension of disbelief a bit there.
Linux is not more secure than MacOS X. I would love to see you demonstrate the contrary.
And people like to install new software. What happens when my dad needs to run TurboTax? Or Quickbooks? Hell, even Quicken. (No, GnuCash is NOT a sufficient substitute)
Where is the usability advantage to Linux for my granddad? It doesn't exist. If all he's ever going to use is the hardware and software I install for him, that's great. But as soon as he wants to use something else, Linux will vomit on him. Like it or not, Windows is better for this market segment. (Depending on what software you want to use, MacOS is arguably even better than that.)
Okay. Football is insipid, but at least it involves people assaulting one another. Whatever its vices, it's not boring. Ridiculous? Sure.
And, with basketball, at least you have guys running to one end of the court, then running back to the other. With baseball AND cricket, you have a couple guys that run for a few seconds, and stand around for half an hour.
Bo-ring.
War is the sport of Kings. Cricket (and its bastard cousin baseball) is just dull.

Trackballs are two-axis only. No yaw. So, therefore, there would be no functional difference between a trackball and a mouse.
Labtec still makes the Space Orb, which is a three-azix device. Logitech also has a division that does three- and six-axis input devices for CAD.
How do you know until you try? I'm all about experimentation.
Although doing better than Expose is going to be a challenge.

Yep. And convicted felons serving jail sentences aren't allowed to go out and see a movie with their buddies.
When you break the law, you get punished. Those punishments restrict your freedom. Please explain to me the hole in my reasoning.
Revoke their corporate charter.
So, it sounds great, if and only if a bunch of things that are beyond your control don't happen.
Noted.
And it's got room in the back for a fucking ham sandwich.
What, no ham sandwich? Then why the hell is it so BIG?
Well, gosh! Thanks for expressing it again! I'm far too stupid to have figured that out myself. Thanks for shining your bewildering light of wisdom into my teeny teeny brain.

Pay for quality. Or don't.

Perhaps individual women don't like to be treated as members of a homogenous group?
I know I don't, and I'm not even a woman.
Stereotypes are sloppy thinking.
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Just because you don't pay enough attention to the people around you to appreciate their unique qualities, doesn't mean they don't have them.
I really pity you.

Linux does not provide a compelling advantage.
