iPod Mini Custom Installation In A Ford Explorer

Johnny Mozzarella writes "MacWorld has a nice write-up on Jesse Melchior, an amateur special effects artist and filmmaker, who used his skills to create a custom installation that is worthy of an iPod mini. The article outlines the materials he used such as latex, plaster and dental acrylic to create an integrated dock complete with blue LEDs and Apple logo in his Ford Explorer."

Note these same tires were also used on the Ford Ranger 4x4 and were not recalled because the Ranger had the proper inflation pressure for that tire listed (primary reason) and the improperly wound lots ended up on Explorers (secondary reason) 2) The complete failure of the tire was generally a blow out at intersate speeds which is dangerous in any vehicle. Blow out a tire in anything going 70 and it will roll (or attempt to) unless the driver knows exactly what to do.

      - Trucks/SUVs have a higher center of gravity, making them easy to roll over if they are driven like a car and also (until recently and with the Explorer in question) they have sold rear axles. Which when coupled with rear wheel drive, stiff rear springs, a high center of gravity, and someone who thinks their Explorer will handle like the FWD car they just replaced, makes for situation that invariably leads to an accident.

Idiotic semantics. What does it matter what makes the truck unsafe? If your kid got killed by an SUV, would you care if it was really the rear springs, or the tires, or the driver expecting it to handle differently that caused the accident? "Now, let's not blame the SUV for this, honey..."

Blow out a tire in anything going 70 and it will roll

Not true. Cars don't instantly roll when their tires blow. Their centers of gravity are too low for that. They pull in the direction of the blown tire first, and then begin to slide, and then roll. Much easier and much more time to correct than an SUV.

that is unrelated to the safety of the Explorer as a vehicle

Oh, sure. "If the Explorer had different tires, and a trained driver, and different springs, it wouldn't have rolled." Guess what? All those things are part of the "safety" of a vehicle. You can't discount the driver, the tires, the cigarette lighter, or any other part of the car. They're all factors. If a car has a cigarette lighter that catches on fire when you drive over 70, the car is unsafe for the road. Period. The correct stance is not "SUVs would be safer if people drove them better," it's "SUVs are not safe with average drivers." They're already out there, and people are not taking special SUV driving classes, and never will.
