I agree, but I have to wonder -- in the PDF, they keep mentioning linear PCM recording at nearly cd quality...
Does that mean they're not able to record 44.1khz x 2 x 16bits? Are they recording at a lower bit rate or resolution??? None of this stands out in the spec sheet....
Of course, the spec sheet reads more of "marketing" than "technical abilities"...
Actually, if you would have done it to *all* and not told anybody, you could probably claim innocence...
I had a friend of mine in a spanish class who wrote swear words on his desk in his free time. Now, the teacher and he didn't get along very well, and the teacher knew where everyone sat....
Turns out, they never could punish him for this. They could have forced a suspension for vandalism and what not, but he just kept claiming that it was not him... they eventually dropped it, with the guidance councilor (sp?) giving him a wink, saying "You're not getting in any trouble, we're not sure who did this.. just watch your step in that class..."
Wasn't that the point of the entire article? To point out that there was no real policy on misuse of school computer resources?
At best, I would have liked to see the kid get a slap on the wrist. But, if I knew then what I know now, I would have taken the 3 day expulsion and enjoyed it. Permanent record indeed.....
I did this once in high school (probably around 10th grade -- 13 years ago?..)
Sent a message "hi" to the cafeteria terminal (with the name of the "lunchlady" on it.) Apparently, to my chagrin, it actually froze the cafeteria application that was running. I did it outside of normal cafeteria hours, so it didn't cause too much fuss, but my account became suspended... stupid me for using my own account and not a "student" generic id at the time.
I was never spoken to about it, and just accepted the locked out account as punishment... a few months later, after an upgrade, my account was unlocked. I learned to not do stuff like that again, or if you do do it, just to think first and act later... use an anonymous account, from a machine that's used by more than a few students a day...
My cat will sometimes wake me up while my alarm is going off. I think that the alarm really bugs her, and of course, she's used to sleeping in until I get home at 5pm (or later) and then eating...
What does she do?
She wakes me up long enough to pet her and allow her in the covers. Then she purrs and goes back to sleep.
Actually that's not altogether true, at least for the company I work for and the Compaq's they used to buy.
Once they end of lifed a machine, you could no longer get that machine. As well, they'd do things such as use a different motherboard in a similar model, and send us that when we requested a standard part (so that ghost loads could work across the board...)
All in all, we had to keep up with imaging etc because computer hardware was in such a boom, and no one wanted to keep old hardware around in case a problem arose (for quick solutions.) I think nowadays, since computing advances have slowed a tad, there's not as much worry about this, but back then, hoo boy.... To give a timeframe, this is about 3 years ago....
"The industry (us) needs to provide seemless, portable, reliable backup."
Actually, I feel quite the opposite. I feel that most common computer users are not aware just how important their data is.
My parents have a pretty old computer, and I try to keep up with updating their hardware (every christmas..) I know for a fact that they don't care about backup solutions (or wouldn't, if it weren't for me covering their butts.) I also know that they probably have more "business critical" information on their machine than I do on any of my network here.
The key is getting a product out to the Lowest Common Denominator, and having them use it, true, but there is something to be said to have the lowest common denominators out there realize just how frail a modern computer can be.
I think that the bigger question is, Who will buy this thing at $400 a piece just to hack it?
People who want to "get more from less" generally buy "less". I don't see a lot of people saying "ooo - cool, I can spend $400 on this, and then spend another $200 on a 300gb drive"... Not saying it won't be done, but the Tivo had a better price/value ratio (even without hacking)...
I've played around with "MESS" and some TI 99/4A roms, and it is possible to "record" to.wav a tape program, and then load the.wav file into the "emulated computer." I've also used it to save some test programs and game saves, and it works like a charm (just dumps to a.wav file, that can load back in at a later date)
Of course, you're looking for a little more than this, and I'm not sure (since I haven't played with any other machines on MESS) if it can do that exact functionality with others... works fine with the method I've used, though.
Everything I've had a fan on eventually gives me problems. Video card? yup. Motherboard? Yup.
I bought a kt400 board from Giga-byte a year ago, and found it had a fan on the chipset. Grrr. Was having stability issues, so I went with an Asus N78x board... no fan... schweet!
I also have a kt133-raid board (abit) which, aside from the fact that it was a very hyped board (and turns out it's actually got a fair share of bugs...) the fan has died on it 3 times!!! If someone out there in slashdot knows where I can find 40mm fans on the "less expensive" side (ball bearing, and not having to buy a "vga cooler kit" just for the friggin' fan) I'd owe ya a beer.
Take the Ferrari (make sure they put it in your name), look the other way (while quitting ) and then sell the Ferrari so that you can take a lot of time off......
"Loyalty - If your previous employer was involved in something illegal or you were seriously underappreciated at your old job that is one thing, but to leave a decent job for a bit of a raise shows where your loyalties lie."
Actually, I would give kudos to a person, if they were in a situation to where they could not advance and were not able to barter for a raise. There are some companies out there that will not give "raises", but merit increases, and if you don't switch jobs, you usually don't get a raise... At least, that's how it is where I work.
Loyalty or none, if I found a job doing what I do for:
1. A little more 2. Opportunity
I'd interview. But then again, I've been here 6 years, so that would get past your #2 point anyways....
I'm guessing a lot of people are in the same boat. I encode my files from my personal collection in VBR at a pretty high rate, and never use the physical original CD ever again. With that kind of encoding, you can't even say "Well, it'll play for a gazillion minutes and you won't hear the same song twice", because with vbr, time != the same amount of space for differing passages of music.
I read a piece about a 128MB flash-based player -- will play 120-240 minutes of music. Me: "What??? Are you insane? That might hold one ten song album for me!"
I agree, but I have to wonder -- in the PDF, they keep mentioning linear PCM recording at nearly cd quality...

Actually had an interesting problem with a Playstation game like this:
Bought Strider2, came with a free copy of the original Strider (which is why I bought it anyways -- always a sucker for nostalgia.)
Put Strider in the PS2, plays #2???? Put the copy that was silkscreened Strider2, was Strider?
No real big deal (since I had both), but would be a pain if I tried to buy it individually....
I don't have a scanner big enough to put a dead body on, let alone a live body....
Actually, if you would have done it to *all* and not told anybody, you could probably claim innocence...

Exactly.

Yea, at that point (linux) he probably would have been logged into the central server (where everyone else logs into) and typed *wall*. :)
Hacking at it's finest, indeed.

And, as you know, you should probably be watching TV while that lightning storm is going on outside....
That's why you buy more cds, rip them, and then compile a new RW.
At least, that's what I do.... I stopped listening to radio in my car the day I got a cd player in my car in '95.
Coffee and cakes... coffee and cakes...
hmmmmm...
Does that mean we'll see a sharp rise in cops with diabetes type 2?
ba-dum-dum!
" and respect for others."
Good to see that that's working out for you.
"you stupid fucking lazy mother fucker."
Nice.

All this, encouraging more Snooze-tastic sleep.
Great.... Nothing starts your day off right like burning down your own house. Or a row of apartments.... :)
EAC works well also, given a proper configuration.
Not all of us use Linux as our primary desktop. I do have one as a dev box, but other than that, it's Windows on the desktop and Linux for servers.
My ex girlfriend gave me 2 bloody noses on account of she was so pissed she thought she should just hit me.
The third time, she "ran into" a wall. I didn't beat her to a pulp, just cought her swing and allowed her momentum to take shape.
I would have said the same thing (never hit a woman) but if they hit me first, you better believe they're not hitting me again.,,

Gotta wake up....

Way off topic, but thanks for the reply -- I just noticed your nick... thought it was interesting to be replying to "assclown"...
Then again, I read your sig and put 2+2... that's pretty good... Office Space...
Cripes...
