Don't know if you're trolling or not, but the engineers who send this stuff up there want to make sure it works.
Kind of like how the financial industry is still stuck on COBOL. It just works, and all the time spent seeing if a "new" cpu or programming language would be wasted getting it back to the reliability of the old system.
We don't need the latest and greatest up there, just something that works. As an aside, power consumption is a big issue as well. Would not want something that dissipates 60-80watts of heat (which translates to at least that much power to drive it full tilt) since they are "low" on energy resources as is.
`If you put a mirror over the top of the stall in the bathroom to look at the guy next to you, that's spying. Not "viewing".`
I wouldn't call it spying, I'd call it sick.
A good friend of mine was working for a chain store (*coughcraftsmancough*) and went in to the restrooms to change for work. The guy in the stall next to him slid over a piece of toilet paper with the words "tap toe for suck" scrawled on them.
Yea, but the opportunity doesn't have scissors to cut the lines to the heater.
Granted, might get a little tingle splicing them back together to turn the heat back on, but I'm sure there would be other accomodations in case of a heater / thermostat failure (i.e. have 2 of them?) if humans were on the surface....
If the entire system shut down, since humans are on the spot (most likely engineers and scientists) they'd probably be able to hack something together. A little more difficult (not impossible) from this distance to a robot.
Not to pick, but you mentioned litigation and a request to do work in one fell swoop.
Someone could think you're sue-happy... obviously, we don't have the whole story, but I don't think an advert in the postings of Slashdot would find you much work.....
Where I work, we have this thing called "HR". They've been promoting more and more stuff lately, such as "Performance Evaluations" which try to accurately measure intangibles.
What the hell? Why can't you let the management (who works with me on a day to day basis) give me a pat on the back, or a punch in the kidneys depending on my performance? I feel like I am being dragged thorugh burning coals every year trying to come up with something WILDLY different in the comments section for each of our Evaluation sections. It's just maddening.
Funny, I've got a radar detector in my garage that has a "Radar Detector Detector" detector on it...
Wow, that's getting redundant?
Anyways, all I can discern it does is shut down the detector when I pass a cop with a detector... I don't live where they're outlawed, but a few neighboring states in the US have instituted laws...
I like the music I like because I do. You like the music you like because you do. Don't start bashing people's tastes, even if they do like something you don't.
Funny how you trivialize moving from your home, but when it comes to the colocated machines, you spit out details.
It's not hard to do either, but there are costs associated with each one. Moving from a certain area? What if you had family near that you wanted to stay in touch with? Friends?
Sometimes it's the intangibles that keep us around.
I know this is comparing 2 very different games, but I've gotten the same run-around with Gradius V, which was supposed to be out in time to ship for my birthday LAST YEAR (12/18). Now, go to amazon, and seemingly every time I look at it, it has a different shipping date.
Grrr.
Konami's page isn't much more help. It's now stated as Q104, which means... end of March/April as far as I know, and who knows if it won't be pushed out further?
"The analog phone network is pretty physically secure"
From a certain standpoint, yes it is.
However, I could probably get a white van, possibly get a few "magnetic phone logos" for the side, and dress up in a blue suit. Grab one of those locking devices for the phone company side of your phone box (outside the house, apartment, etc) and place a tap there. Transmit via wireless (even low power would allow me to sit on the street somewhere, perhaps acting as if I was on a cell phone...) and voila.
Now, this would take a splash of social engineering, as well as the time on my hands to do such a thing....
Oh, as for them being required to ditch and not listen to, would you truly trust that? I know that people are all human... one thing they would do (whether it disturbs you or not) is probably listen and chuckle at you from afar....
"There's no way that ten small hard drives are anywhere near as reliable as one large one."
Of course not. That's why you RAID them.
Step inside any company that has a pressing need for online data storage -- betcha they're using... *gasp*... RAID. And drives smaller than the 300some odd gigger that you can buy for home!

But let's say they're looking at 1v just for kicks.
10-50mA would suddenly turn into 50-250mA. So, "x"mA is kind of a misleading term.
Think calamine lotion and Electonic parts cleaner.
Just beware. The first spray into the "jack" will leave you feeling a little disoriented.
SCO is going after Martha Stewart?
That's it. I've had it.
On an off note, how did the parent post go from a score of 2 to a score of 1????... odd...

"So don't expect to be able to take your pr0n with you on the road just yet in electric, rollable form."
:)
I don't know about you, but depending on how it's dithered, I can use my imagination to fill in the color...
So with Windows, is it like premature ejaculation? :)
Ergo, if your bones are sticking through your skin, you'll probably have blood!
Profit!
Amen.

Every coworker I know hates them as well.

Elitism gets you nowhere in my book.
Yea, sounds to me like a new version of Capcom game...
You mean you don't have a copy yet?
:)
For shame!

Umm, wouldn't ID = DOOM, and not DNF?
Actually, that should be done to whomever allowed that movie to be created - be it the investors, the movie production company, and the distributors.
For shame.
I would think that the man would probably not survive a bounce (or 15) off of the martian soil. That's just my take though.
It would probably take much more to support putting "man" there than it would anything robotic; robotics can be designed to handle stress. Man cannot.
Check out Konami's site. Gradius V - 1q04. Used to be 4q03, but got pushed back.
I know I'm waiting.
Works to get full powerups on Gradius games still.. not sure about Gradius 5 though -- still not released....
No, I'm not bitter.

I hope my port doesn't switch to full duplex.
