Have you looked into reasons of why our PC crashes? I'm constantly building Visio diagrams, documenting schema's, editing 500 page documents full of 20-30 meg schema diagrams and at the same time telneted into several servers, and connected to an application server running on Solaris through exceed and still running Lotus notes and whatnot..

must be buying some sour computers man.

Hello, i just have my laptop go into sleep mode, open it up when i get hope and pick right up (with the exception of telnet sessions).

Why change your whole application suite for what could be an obvious hardware or application problem. My pc quit crashing on my almost 2 years ago and over the last year hasn't crashed unless *I* did something wrong. Well, i can't say it enough. Use a web framework, i don't know of any for Perl off the top of my mind, but i use Resin.

Resin is a JSP, Servlet, XML, XSLT application server that support all the latest and greatest EJB components and Managed persistance on the database and makes a great framework to build from.

I have Postgresl for the Database, and use beans to run queries and output via xml and then i have XSLT draft xml data into the wonderfull HTML code.

The beauty is, my code is in beans, servlets and jsp's. My HTML is in .xtp files (in the case of resin) and simple XSLT sheets parse the XML to render to the user.

Just means i can produce output easily for WAP, Palm, CE, Normal Web Browsing, EMail, and what not without modifying the backend. Just create xslt using a session identifier to bring up the corresponding stylesheets for whatever device is acesssing the page.

Enough about java, but something similar, be it in house developed would be your best bet.

I also get away with using a Swing applicatoin to manage the database, users and run reports provide an easy to navigate gui which just interprests the same xml data that would be retrieved by the html client. Not a single change to the backend since i'm using the beauty of soap, jsp's, servlets and java.

Virtualize your interfaces, standardize on your backend and use re-useable components. Perl is similar in many ways that you can load libaries and abstract your code from the display which will save you tons of hours of hassle in any future upgrades compared to the bit of changes you would do now

    $.00

Infact i only paid 149.00 to upgrade to Windows XP after running 2k for a while that wasn't a bad deal either.

Now if i have any problems i can submit the crash dump to Microsoft and within 3 days they have analyzed the dump and written back if it is hardware, software, os bug or program bug.

I can't get that from Linux being an endusers, i don't have time to peruse the code to fix all the bugs that i may come across and well, features WIndows has em all, i'm not waiting for one thing or another then what the latest and greatest will be.

But waite, i also Have a Suse 7.1 server i bought for a few hundred running an Portal 9iAS server, and i have a Professional RedHat 7.2 i have purchased from redhat. Both of which cost me just as much as my windows solution with the same amnount of support. Linux happily runs my Resin/JSP/XML/XSL development server and makes a great workstation for coding..

But believe me, your underestimating the value of having upgrades and at the same time not having to download new kernels, compile, tweak, reboot, and crap like that. That is the luxury of Windows. If you need an update, point your browser to windowsupdate and voila.

Sure Ximian has it, but upgrade your OS to something else and wait... wait.. wait.. and maybe the support will come, or quite possibly after you have already purchased ximian and paid the 9.95 a month for preferred access your already paying out the wazooo for more then what windows costs..

anywhooo, your not right or wrong, but your point is moot without you actually giving any reasons linux would be cheaper. Time is money, and if it takes a while day for me to download an iso, install, patch, secure, tweak and fix a linux box then that has cost me alot more then a 149.00 cost of XP that has installed out of the box on more hardware then i have ever seen..

Just because they use that, doesn't mean it is a pc. My dreamcast has a keyboard, mouse, ethernet and modem and runs Windows CE, that doesn't make it a "PC".

Sony recently released linux for the PS2, does that make it a PC?

The GameCube uses a Power PC processor, bios and an ATI video card, not much different then a MAC and could easily be hacked to run any os. Just doesn't include a convenient ethernet port or disk drive.

Xbox is far from a PC. it is about as much of a pc as a Tivo is or as much as a pc as my dreamcast is.

The Disk also caches for better load times, and will act as a storage device for the Gaming network so you can download game demos and try before you buy.

Project gotham in its own has killer music. I love driving through NYC listening to Hot 97 fm, hitting england hearing the chemical brothers, hitting san francisco listening to surf music and finally racing in japan with jap pop playing. Physics, Gameply and graphics are superb, smash your ferrari into a lit up sign and you see the reflections against the car as well as the damage, braze the guardraul and see guardrail damage, get bumbed by another car and see fender damage as well as headlights/tailights bust out. Hell you can even see your driver looking around and changing gears!

The games are far from scripted, Munch's Odysee is a beautifull game. I don't even know what you mean by "glow to much" other then the fact if you play Munch's Odysee you just fall lin love with the characters because they're fun, loveable and personable. Even though they're ugly they react to you, they're funny and fit very well into the game that Munch's Odysee is.

Phantasy star is on the Dreamcast and is coming to Gamecube as well as the Xbox.

PGR is a F**KIN awesome game. 300 levels, beatiful graphics, killer soundtrack, EXCELLENT controls and challenging. Many different challenges from street racing to "kudo" point scoring pending your abilities to slam a ferrari around a corse and not hit the walls and make the best time.

oh well, just choose what you wish. I'm very happy with my Xbox. Munch's Odysee is an increadibly charming game and offers a new style of playing, better then any previous version and more unique then a bunch of mario/pikachu characters and such.

Halo is simply incredible, Project Gotham is fun for a racer, Amped is a killer and exact snowboarding game. If you want to compare against PC's then that rules out Metal Gear Solid, Unreal Tournament, All EA Sports games, The Grand Theft Auto Series, bunch of Sega Games and tons more.. (I can even play tonyhawk on the pc).

Its just the simple fact microsoft chose proven, affordable and mass produceable hardware without changing the underlying infrastructure they have been developing on for the past two decades.

You simply bootup your xbox, pop in an audio cd, rip the tracks, and then load PGR, choose audio and select the tracks you ripped. Now your playing games with the music you like.

Halo, no matter if it comes out for the PC is a great game on the Xbox. The controller is superb for halo controls, i don't know why people despise the controller so much. It (the xbox controller) is MUCH more confortable with games requiring the dual analog sticks then "thumbing" the PS2 type controllers or monkeying with the Nintendo controllers.

DVD Support is great in the Xbox as well support all digital audio outputs other then the costly THX output.

The Xbox isn't meant for PC porting, i don't know whose ass your pulling that out of. I can play EA's games, Tony Hawk and all the other hottest sellers (Including Grand Theft auto) on my PC if you really want to be a wise ass and get precise.

Don't get me wrong, the Gamecube is a great system if your into the mario stuff.

Xbox is far from a PC.. And even if it is a "PC", wasn't that what another console maker was trying to do with LInux?

What makes the Xbox so powerfull and affordable is its pc "roots", hence keeping the cost of ownership for amount of processing power VERY low.

You will get alot more out of an XBox then you will even the Fastest pc right now for the simple fact there is one VERY high powered video card, one sound card, one network card and a single interface. There is no os overhead, no different drivers, no crashes because someone has a cheap video card, no overhead of background processes.

The Xbox is a green, lean and mean machine. Your just missing out on some of the action if you limit your consoles to one vendor.

No, Microsoft isn't lobying pc developers. If you see the latest releases and schedules, most games coming out on the Xbox that are out on PC are coming out for Gamecube and PS2 as well (Max Payne, Unreal Championship, Grand Theft Auto, EA Sports games...) Xbox comes with a 100mbit ethernet. PS2 and Gamecube have neither.

Xbox will be upwards compatible with MUCH more success. Say 5 years from now the Xbox will be at 4 ghz, 1 gig ram, 500x dvd rom and half the size, still capable of running previous games without emulation or hardware tricks simply because the process moved forward instead of being completely re-engineered.

Xbox supports "prgressive scanning" on games, and didn't include it on DVD's because mircrosoft wants to sell games, not movies. (but may do so in the future as needed). Gamecube and PS2 don't do progressive scan movies either.

Progressive scanning is still a feature of "Taiste". DVD MOVIES are encoded at what, 500 lines resolution so progressive scanning at those resolutions amounts to what??? NOT MUCH.

Remember, consoles are still "Consumer Devices" Hence they're aren't meant for niche markets of people with 15,000 dollar tv's and they aren't meant to compared to 1,200 dollar progressive scanning dvd players.

However, PS2, Xbox and GC are kick ass systems affordable to the masses and frankly, the Xbox has the "Sex appeal" for those with the big toys already. PS2 was ahead of its time a year ago, and the Game cube is nintendo's toy and nintendo has its own market.

The winner is the consumer. I paid 300.00 for a dvd player 2 years ago, i paid 300 bucks for my xbox wich plays dvds, games and much more. Even if i stick to my 3-5 launch title games and a few more, i still "never lost".
