  1. Re:no Binaries on Test KDE 3.3's Public Release Candidate · · Score: 5, Informative

Hi, the beta 2 is working perfectly but for some non-show stopping bugs. I use it for dayly work at home. Kmail for email, the Addressbook and and callendar. The visuals have once again got even better! I love the IM Kopete. I use it with ICQ, MSN and Yahoo without any problems. Konqueror filebrowsing is great. Is it better than 3.2... not realy, just nicer. more like how 98 was nicer than 95 (I mean the GUI) but everything works just like before. My PC is a Duron 800 with 256 Megs and kde 3.3 beta2 works fairly fast. When I disable most of the animations (which I used to do on Win2k too) it is extremely usable. By the way, my wife uses the same PC and never complains, but for the spellchecking, which does not detect the language she is writing in, which makes it useless. Themes are nicer now. Hope this helps. Any specific questions?

You're right. We would be even better of if everyone who flys tries to smuggle a gun aboard. The more people who test the security, the better the chances are of us helping them find all of their security flaws. Yeah, that would work really well...

I must agree (even tough I think your are sarcastic), that is exactly the OpenSource method applied to the real world. Why do you think do companies pay people to test their services (for example by trying to return a defect item)? There is a big incentive to test the systems out there and the real change in our way of doing things would be to challenge how it is done.

In the context of this story I must add that it is the journalists job to check if the system is working.

    I disagree with you here:

    1. break into your house to show you how easy it is. It will really help you out in the long run, and you should thank me.

I see a lot of value in this. I latley saw a TV program that showed how easy it is to break into a normal (let say un-patched) house. I take is seriously now, as I previously felt secure.

    2. show the pilot on the next flight I'm on how easy it is to get a gun through airport security

Applies to the logic on point 1. If you can show this to be true, we all will be much better off.

    3. show the Secret Service (hey, this is sarcasm. I don't need you guys to visit) how easy it is to jump the fence at the whitehouse and run across the lawn

Yes, but show me how you can do this undetected and potentially kill the president? (I am not daring anyone to do this, nor implying that I would want to kill anyone! ;-)

    4. stick up the local bank to show them how bad their security is. I could write a really good article on that. Obviously I would give them their money back, so there isn't any harm in that. Right?

Sure, again I would love to see how you do that, as it is MY money I keep in the Bank, because I think it is secure. Proove that it isn't and I will make sure my bank upgrades their security.

they got caught way to easily? As far as I understood they published their findings... that does not account to being cought in my world...

I believe journalism has to cross the boundries of ethics once in a while to mantain our freedom. If anything they wrote was a lie, that would be different, but they did factchecking!

I was at a wedding recently where everyone got a disposable camera as they entered. We where asked to make as many photos as we wanted. This was cool because: * Its distributed photo making (think cluster!) * OpenSourcing (we returned the camera but coud reorder prints online) * Chances of good pictures where great And they had a normal Photograph for the standard pictures of bride and groom, but only for that!

  11. Small and Medium Business on Novell as Open Source Hero? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I believe Novell has a good standing to start to win back small and medium business, as long as they can show how these porblems get resolved through their offerings:

    * Licencing cost are low(er) compared with rivals
    * Costs due to Viri don't exist in Novell's SuSE offerings (business men know this problem first hand)
    * Costs due to Spam get significantly reduced due to Novells SuSE offerings (business men know this problem)
    * Security is inherently high (business men know this problem)
    * Single signon and other Directory services are good for business (business men know this problem)
    * OpenOffice is free and compatible (free is allways good, as long as you get support... Novell enters the stage)
    * Novell removes the nerdy part of Linux and makes it business man friendly

These are not technical arguments. They would be the ones I would use to convice any owner of a small or medium business to use Novell's products in an upgrade cycle (from win95, from Oracle 8, from IE5 etc.).
