While in college I rewired my old monitor from an Apple II. I think it was called an Apple III Monitor for some reason. Anyhow, I ran hooked my speaker wires up to the coils that controled the beam in the CRT. This caused it to draw funky patterns. One particular Led Zeppelin track would draw a guitar on the screen.
Unfortunately the instrument being played was a harmonica. Strange that a harmonica would draw a guitar.
Nobody would believe me when I told them this, but everyone willing to make a trip up to my room left as a believer.
I have since written a simple WinAmp plug-in that emulates this effect. The analog way is much more neato though.
When the Bluesmobile does a backflip towards the end of the movie, the car can been seen traveling upside-down and backwards. Yet the car clearly lands on its tires. There must have been a 180 degree twist midflight, but it is never shown twisting.
Without the twist, the car would have had to have landed either on its roof, or if it completed a 360 degree flip, it would have landed on its tires facing the same direction it had originally been heading.
Which is not what happened.
Somehow without twisting this car is facing one direction, does a backflip and lands on its tires facing the opposite direction. This clearly violates the laws of physics.
For me, this impossibility ruined what was an otherwise well-researched and accurate film.
Maybe you mean that other site, K5. I have looked for it on/. and I can't find it either. Search shows nothing recent. This is strange since he could put up a column on how he was going to make his own ultra-wide band who knows what with his very own supercomputer and it would show up here as news. I never did mind, since I would rather discuss what he says than Katz, but you would think of anything that he ever wrote, this is the most worthy of a/.ing.
I find it hard to believe that this is news for nerds, stuff that MATTERS, when the recent Cringely article about the death of his son and Cringely's call for help sent to geeks everywhere was rejected.
This subject was covered in Spider-Man 2099. That Spider-Man had organic web shooters and at one point he remarks, "At least it's not shooting out butt."
And I was there to witness it first-hand. The first game was against Russia. I was sitting on an empty bus going to someone's house to watch the game with them. Fifteen minutes before kickoff people came streaming out of their places of work. The bus was completely filled after one stop. The driver had to push people out the door to keep them from getting on. Fans who weren't allowed onto the bus lined up in front to bar it from leaving, hoping their protest would cause the bus driver to let them on. It took ten minutes to finally get going.
We started going up a hill and there was another busload worth of people at the next stop. The driver didn't even slow down. Then I saw something that I had never seen before (outside of athletic events and cops'n'robbers type stuff): Brazillians running! People were sprinting up the hill to get to their homes in time for kick-off.
The same scenario was repeated for nearly every game. When they won the tournament the party lasted for days. It was estimated that Brazil's GNP suffered a $2 billion loss because of the World Cup that year.
Luckily, or unluckily depending on how you look at it, the team isn't as good this year, people down there don't seem too excited, and the country will likely not lose as much money as it did last time.
I have an Thinkpad T21. Native resolution at 1400x1050 is great. Scaling down to most resolutions is awful because of pixel interpolation. However, 640x480 looks just fine since the pixels are simply doubled. This leaves a black border around the screen but it is nice for games since the 3d graphics are too hot on this rig.
I would guess that the one resolution that would look great on this monitor is 800x600, since it would only require pixel doubling rather than some ugly interpolation. They don't mention whether they actually tried this resolution, and I am guessing that they didn't, because it would have surprised them. It would look just fine. Of course 800x600 is so small that it would be pretty useless for anything other than gaming with a crappy 3d card.
Using dedicated architectures is what made PSX and PS2 so good.
It also makes the hardware itself difficult to develop. Developing software for the PS2 is no walk in the park from what I've read. I could be wrong since I have done no development for it myself.
Do you really doubt that there will be an XBox2? Do you really think that it won't be backward compatible? Are you trolling here?
If off-the-shelf parts were so much worse than the custom-componentry of the PS2 then how is it that the XBox is as good as it is?
Sony has courted alliances with some of the technology industry's biggest hitters in an effort to "soundly beat whatever our rivals produce next''. IBM and Toshiba are jointly designing the central chip that will control the PlayStation 3 at a top-secret technology lab in Austin, Texas. The project, which aims to create the ultimate graphics and sound processor, is believed to cost around $1bn (£650m).
How much will MS have to spend to develop the XBox2? Well, let's see... Get a faster mobo, fast gpu, and faster cpu. Done! And it is backwards compatible with the old one already! And the development tools won't require learning some fancy new architecture. MS has stumbled out of the gate, but long term who really has the advantage here?
This is both a blatant plug and a serious question. I have written a video game that is inspired by Star Wars. You can find it here.
I wrote it for a school project. There is more explanantion of how it came about on the web page.
I recently discovered another game written for the same class that is a even more blatant rip-off. It is here. Strangely, this second game was developed without any knowledge of mine. Both seem to be inspired by Star Wars and specifically by the asteroid field scene in ESB.
When I lived in Palo Alto the sidewalks on Univeristy Ave. said, "No Bikes" right on the sidewalk itself. It was spraypainted on each corner. Now, if you are confusing Stanford with Palo Alto, then yes, if you are a pedestrian you had better realize that you are taking your life into your own hands. I back when James Stockdale was Ross Perot's running mate I nearly ran him over near Green Library. If he had simply kept walking it would have been fine, but he spotted me and "tried" to avoid me. Nearly ended in trajedy.:)
You obviously haven't met any bike geeks. When I lived in Palo Alto two of the best bike shops in the country were there and they were a bit hit with the geek population. Google HQ is/was very nery to Palo Alto bikes.
Many bike geeks will spend as much time putting exotic parts on their bikes as computer geeks spend making an clear plastic case with a blacklight or OCing.

Not only that, but at the local sev, they got rid of Cherry and introduced Sour Cherry at the same time the new WWF inspired flavor came out. Now I am stuck drinking my specially ordered caffiene free Dr Pepper with real sugar.
If we edit out the "better/faster/" we get "bigger/smaller" hard drives. I do know what you mean, but I just think there must be a better way of saying, "My new IBM hard drive is bigger than my old drive. It is also smaller than my old drive."
Google cache is a good example. Has anyone sued Google? The Scientologists?
Still, I think that/. would want to run ads or have subscriptions pay for each page view. I certainly think that it is one thing for someone to simple cache a page. It is another to cache it and show your own ads.
I don't think that Taco & Co. are worried enough about this problem to do anything about it. If they were they would have done something long ago. The copyright problem seems like an excuse. It would be a simple thing for them to contact small site owners and ask for permission to take a snapshot of a portion of a site and leave it up for a few days. They could even show the sites own ads in addtion to any ads that non/. subscribers see. Heck, if/. actually made $$ they could pay small sites a bit for the right to cache their content for a while.
Interestingly at least two stories today were from small sites that got hammered within seconds of hitting the front page. In fact, all the Lego (tm) stories that I can remember recently got/.ed so fast that I had to wait until a day or two later to view them.
I don't seem how anyone is harmed by temporary caching if done with some thought, do you?
oh, once you put it in your pluggin directory, select it in WinAmp and then select "Strange" in the drop down box at the bottom.

My current car (old 4-Runner, top comes off) uses gas faster but accelerates slowler each year. Is that good?
My new IBM drive is bigger and smaller than by old drive.
