"DeCSS is akin to a tool that breaks the lock on your house." You have "no more right to distribute DeCSS in this way than [you] would to distribute keys to [someone's] house and a map because [you] did not like [his] furniture" - actual quotes from the MPAA website (modified with brackets), thought you might like 'em.
So you're saying that be actively skirting copyright law, they are in some way voiding their copyrights? I like it, but I can't see you winning a court case with that.
Because movies are entertaining, and people like watching them. No more, no less. Love the DMCA (?) or hate it, going to the movies is still a kick-ass fun time (usually) so why should we have to suffer because of this? That's the last thing I want.
>>The American Library Association should announce soon that they will be striking up a deal with Viacom/Time-Warner/AOL/Virgin/UniCorp to allow library patrons to borrow their copyrighted material.
Libraries need to strike a deal to do this? Since when?? My library has lots of CDs, movies, etc, and I'm sure some of them must me Viacom/Time-Warner/etc?? Maybe you're just being sarcastic, I don't know. It's early.
Well, first off, I believe he calls himself a gimp in the commercial, and secondly I'm talking about retarded in the a) comparitive sense and b) physical sense, not the mental sense, which I suppose is the more common use of the word. Anyway, I realize he's obviously very gifted, but I still found it disappointing when he was seemingly exploited for commercial profit, but reading one of the other replies apparently he's happy with the arrangment too, so I guess it's all good.
I hadn't even heard of Cingular since like last week, where did they come from? And that ad where they had that retarded gimp artist, I was intrigued and like "that guy's pretty cool" and then I saw it was an ad for cingular and I was left to wonder how the hell a gimp artist who can't even speak intelligently can promote cell phones . . oh well
My moviegoing experience is a 1 or a 0: entertained or not entertained . . .
with that said, i was entertained, so i guess it was good, and as i said before (in another story) my favorite part was the 700x CD-R drive milo had
There's no obligation to back up claims - he can say whatever the hell he wants. Sure he sounds more believable and what not if he cites sources, but it isn't a requirement as I see it. If you want to know, you find out, or choose to not believe it.
I also saw it last night, and apart from the somewhat stupid HTML at the beginning (as far as I could tell they just had a big table and an image map, and repeated the code over and over) I enjoyed it, and as for it "supposedly" being inspired by the microsoft case, it was obviously 100% inspired by M$, as anyone watching the movie will see from the first minute to the end. Tim Robbins was made to look like Bill Gates, they refer to Gates ("Who?") and they basically mock microsoft throughout.
Apart from all this, I'd have to say my favorite part was the 500x (estimate on my part, heh) CD writer that burned a full CD in around 5 seconds.

Blizzard has now responded to the situation, saying that all characters with problems will be restored to their condition as of December 19 (presumably the last full backup) - this includes EVERY hardcore character that has died between Dec. 19 and now, and every normal character that is "flagged" as being tampered with.
www.fucknbc.com is currently registered by 2600 and points to www.cbs.com - they are looking for people to put up a "real" fucknbc.com with gripes and stuff, so feel free to take them up on that
It may be more of a desktop publisher than a word processor (I've never used it) but I do know that Adobe has a full featured desktop publisher in PageMaker, so I hardly think they'd have two, so I think Framemaker is more of a book publishing software.
While in Germany last summer, I bought a DVD, "Fight Club." While I knew that this was Region 2 and might not play when I got back, I wanted it anyway a) for souvenir purposes and b) in case I could play it I wanted the German audio and subtitles not available on a Region 1 DVD
Anyway, I got back and found out that I could play it (on my computer - I don't have any other DVD player) but I could only switch to and from this disc 5 times, meaning I could really only watch it a couple times, which, while better than nothing, still pretty much sucks.
This is my DMCA story, and the thing that defeats the "just get it in region 1 format" argument is the fact that the region 2 version includes features not included on the region 1 version (german language) so therefore they are not the same product.
I'd be even more pissed if I lived in region 2 because tons of region 1 DVDs have loads of extra features that I couldn't get in region 2. The DMCA needs to go down!
I did say that if I couldn't get the songs it would be ok, but since I can why not? Sure I'm not doing what the content providors want, but they're NOT LOSING ANYTHING.
There're lots of bad laws, that's not much of an argument - I probably would lose in court, but that's not what I was saying - I was saying I don't consider it theft, and that's all that matters to me. They have not lost anything, therefore there is no crime.
Plus, I don't see how income taxes have anything to do with this. The only thing it has in common with this is the fact that it involved me paying out money or not. Income tax is not something you can "steal", it's not a product, so it doesn't really have anything to do with music at all.
My thing is this: I don't consider it theft, because most of the songs I download from napster, I would never pay for anyway, so they're not losing any money. See? I'm never gonna buy a backstreet boys CD, but maybe they have a song or two I wouldn't mind listening to once in a while. I'll download it. If I didn't have it, that would be fine too, I wouldn't buy it, but since I can get it free, heh why not?
"According the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, copyright holders can request that Internet companies refuse access to those people who are making unauthorized materials available for distribution."
Why do all these things have to come out of the DMCA? the "Devil's Modia Conglomerate Ass-kisser" I like to call it. Actually I just made that up, but well it works. So are they saying that without the DMCA they wouldn't be able to do this? Or what? Anyway, napster isn't everything anyway, there's still a few (hundred) alternatives.
I thought we were talking about ballots that were valid (ie not double punched) but maybe had some holes not fully punched (hanging, pregnant, dimpled chads, whatever you want to call them). Now it's pretty obvious if you see one hole and/or indentation in a section that that is who the person was hoping to vote for, but for whatever reason (it doesn't truly matter) didn't check to see if their chad was hanging or not. Well, stuff does happen I imagine.
OK, maybe we don't have a direct democracy, but we have a form of government that allows everyone (over age 18 and resident of a state or DC) to vote. This being said, we cannot discriminate between votes of equally qualified (under the law) people. Just because one maybe voted unwisely or stupidly doesn't make his vote less than someone else's. And one thing about mob rule, at least it's rule
And yet other states and/or counties still use the stupid punching system . . . we can read pencil ballots with computers now people, how hard is that to implement?? I go in, get my ballot, grab the official "ballot pencil" fill in the ovals ala ACT or SAT and I'm done. All candidates are in one column, no hanging chads . . . no wonder my state isn't being recounted!! Originally I thought it was because Bush won 65%-30% but now I know it's because our technology is vastly superior! And to think people think we don't have electricity up here. Gah!
We should strive to make even stupid and lazy peoples' votes count the same as intelligent, non-lazy peoples'. This is a basic principle (or at least should be) of our democracy.

I can only pray to god you're joking.

Exactly. You tend to be taken more seriously if you back up claims, but it's by no means a necessity.
True, but that was fairly low on Gary's list of offenses, all told.

The highest I could have payed is $6.50, even if I wanted to pay more.
