    Here in Holland things are getting even stranger. Mobile companies are advertising with SMS-Dating, SMS-gaming, SMS-chat (together with tv/teletext), SMS-info (like flightinfo), and a hell of a lot more stuff. Just goes to show that the big corp's are also cashing in on the SMS-hype.

    It is incredible howmuch SMS has become a part in everyday life here. It's ideal for sending messages but not bothering people when they are busy, plus it's a lot cheaper than calling someone (0.50$ for 1 min. of talking...)

    It's weird to see ppl depend on sms in europe, whereas ppl in the US don't even use it. Silly American's ;o)

    The gadgetshop is a kewl place to look for neat stuff. Not geek-only stuff, but they have their supply of talking fish.

    Last time i was in downtown London i bought one of those gigabot's. A geek-tamagotchi, i got sick of it within the hour, it'll drive you completly mad. It does look kewl with a joint stuck in its mouth |o)

    It doesn't have "i 0wn u" t-shirts, but it's better than nothin...

    Wonder how this prog works (if it does at all, as you will probably need more than DSL, if you would want a nice game of UT)

    Has anyone actually tried this stuff out? It would be kewl to stream the whole app onto a CD for 5 bucks, beats the hell out of leeching a bogged FTP ;o)

    AOL would 0wn it, it would get nearly as bad as windoze XP.

    Plus, not a lot of PS2's would be equiped with a HD, so you would only be able to use the stuff on the cd/dvd. Want to change your background? no go, after a reboot your RAM's clean, and you would have to download everything again.

    Yeah sure, it *could* be kewl, but it would be new, frightening, different, and it wouldn't have fscking OE. The only people who would be interested are geeks, the main-stream would play it safe. Always has been. Just think about it. A lot of people have started with dos or Windoze 3.1. Then 95. then 98. then 2000. And it has always been enough, for them. Why try something else?

    We can only hope that Micro$hit fscks up with XP, only allowing their own progs on it. Then, two things could happen:
    1. Everyone sees the true 3vi1 of M$, and Linux is as good as ever to replace it on their PC's.
    2. Everyone thinks it will be good, because the always have had windows on their pc. Why not pay for Windoze every year? You can still do the stuff you want, without a lot of hassel...

    Let's pray M$ fscks up good...

    Mandrake, come one people. Get a real distro, kids...

    But, seriously, this is not the best of times to think about IPO's. it may sound k3wl to them, but they need solid backing, that meens cash, that means support from banks & firms.
    the community is great, and i would probably buy a few shares myself, but Mandrake needs more than a few enthusiastic *nix users to make this worthwhile

    Linux on the desktop hasn't even hatched yet! Look at Redhat 7.x, i mean, even an absolute newbie can install the bugger. Now all we have to do is wait for serious apps, and to be honest, i think we will see a lot of growth in this area, where the stuff in Winblows just stays dull&boring... I use Debian everywhere, server, desktop, laptop, i just luv it! Spread the word, there are masses of people out there who can help us, people who are now locked in by their closed-source OS. Let's free them! Umm... by the way, i'm not missing a single app all my Winblows-friends have. do you?

    When (not if anymore :o) such an elevator is build, the first will probably be a joint-venture between a number of country's, like what's happening with the ISS. A single nation wouldn't be able to do it all by itself, the costs are way to high, and the monopoly-position would alert anyone with a grain of common-sence. Maybe the UN should start it all up in 50 years, but all you american's first need to pay those UN-bill's before we can start with Eiffel#2 :o)

    They can't seriously mean this. What makes GNU/Linux so great is that distro's are freely avalible, if not the whole distro, then only the non-commercial part of it. The right to download free software is one of the pilars of our community, to in any way make money of it should not be the way. I would pay for a distro, but only if i would want to support the development of further versions.

    People should be given the choice to freely download a distro without extra commercial software and services or buy the whole lot. In any way changing this seems to me like properatary-ing freely-avalible software.

    Just my 2c.

    Indeed, it isn't impossible :o)
    A while ago there was a thread here on /. about Quantum Computers and qubits. Seemed that these could generate truely random 0's and 1's. Can't remeber much of the details, though.
    That is, truley random for us now. Who knows, it may be explainable in a few hundred years :o)
    But finally a truely random xbill, i can hardly wait ;o)

    Come on, even fscking NASA uses MySQL. There may still be a few problems with connectivity between MySQL and commercial BS, but there aren't any problems with DB size. My bet is that MySQL would run a lot smoother than Oracle on huge systems you mention.

    And if i can imagine NASA running MySQL, yeah, i can imagine Visa or Mastercard running it too. The sky ain't the limit :o)
