  1. use 100 gb hard disks for the time being :) on Mega-DVDs -- 100GB Apiece · · Score: 1

Get a IDE RAID array, 4 100 GB IDE hard disks, and you got yourself 300 GB of space at ultra-fast speeds. :)

Then again, you lose the portability but the costs are probably much lower right now(a 100 GB IDE drive goes for about $300-$400 CDN now and a cheap RAID card could cost you $70-$150 CDN) and you probably have less chance for an error.

In any case, a 100 GB disc is pretty cool. :)

  2. microsoft wants the internet? on MSN Blocks Mozilla, Other Browsers [updated] · · Score: 1

Not in my bloody lifetime (that is 70-90 years buddy).

Microsoft has to realise that maybe there are a few million Unix users who use Netscape/Moz/Opera (even though Opera along with Konq can mask themselves as Microsoft IE) because Microsoft only serves their browser to Mac OS X, HP-UX and Sun Solaris, and not BSD, Linux, or some other form of Unix.

I do use Linux as a desktop OS quite frequently and I'd rather use Netscape over Opera at times as I do not want to deal with banners and such, but since Microsoft has decided to use such monopolistic tactics (where is the DOJ right now?), that means I have use Opera or Konq.

Do we see car companies making it so you can only buy a certain brand of gasoline? No... so why do we need a company telling us what specific browser do we have to use?

  4. BeOS is a great OS, but... on Can BeOs Live On As Open Source? · · Score: 1

As much as I hate to say it, it doesn't belong on the desktop. BeOS is a totally rewritten Operating System that has been arround since 1995, Linux is a Unix and Unix has been in existance since 1969, and Windows has been in existance since 1983. BeOS has no real strong-hold here, I have used it and liked it, but countless times did I find myself hunting down drivers for it instead of using the OS. With Linux, 90% of the hardware I have come across had drivers allready and the hardware that I came across while using Windows had virtually 100% compatablity.

BeOS may not die if released in Open-Source, but the problem is that there is allready enough Operating Systems out there and Be went in too quickly and too big.

It may live on in the Palm Market or other applications, but it isn't a server OS and it has no real chance of being a desktop OS. One good strong point is that a fair chunk of PC users detest Macintoshes for no real valid reason, my father is a good example, the BeOS GUI is Macish and therefore would be scounded upon.

    Sorry Be. :(

Actually, this is a good truth. Linux is free, so in today's volatile economy it makes sense to use such an Operating System that only costs a download and maybe a burn to a CDR (that is like less than $1 for the OS technically).

If Staroffice can get better (and faster), it could do some damaging to Microsoft Office. Remember, if Word can kill Wordperfect, Staroffice can kill Office. Maybe KOffice could too, but I can't predict the future sadly. If I could, I'd be saying that Microsoft would be bankrupt in fifteen years. :P

...on stopping these messengers. The problem is, if they're reporting the truth they're not comitting slander as Microsoft might put it. Microsoft does a good job on their products sometimes, but it is things like this that really show the incompetence in that company. Yes, I know every program out there probably has some sort of exploit, vulnerability, or bug, but it is up to the person or company that wrote the software (that is if the software is not open-source) to fix that bug. Bugs, exploits, and vulnerabilities should be reported because knowing Microsoft, if they found out they would do absolutely nothing.

Microsoft has two options here, release the source or fix their damn bugs themselves and stop crying. I wonder how cryptic the source would be?

Yet they think that such a comment like this will stop people from writing future code that exploits the faults in their own software that they should fix in the first place. So what happens when you find a bug in Windows that erases your hard drives contents? Not report it and let people's hard disks get erased? I don't think so.

ID Cards should be used for things like trains and airplanes, maybe boats too if you think about cruise ships. The only thing that should be on these cards is your picture, full name, birthday, and city of residence. It does not need your ethnic background or religion.
