  1. Block Them on Emusic Tracking MP3s On Napster · · Score: 1

Couldnt you simply block them from connecting to you. I would imagine that to do this effectively they would need to connect often, this would expose where they are connecting from. Assumming, they dont use different points each time, but in practice would be limited. Just need a host.deny type file for Gnapster, and they cant get access to your files.

  2. Changing The File on Emusic Tracking MP3s On Napster · · Score: 2

The guy that reversed engineered the protocol said that you only need to change one bit. What is to stop, say something like Gnapster to just change one bit at the start and end randomly? Will this affect the song playability that much? This an example where open-source clients are going to be so much better, especially considering an move by Napster to do this would be against their case.

  3. Its a super footballer plot on Company Gains Research Rights To Tongan Genome · · Score: 1

Did you notice it was Joe Gutnick who signed the document? Im assuming its the same guy who owns coal mines and also the Melbourne Demons Aussie Rules Club. The Demons lost the grand final last year, and it appears that they need to get some genes from tongan rugby players to be added to make a super footy player. I'd also be interested in what jewish law states on something like this, Gutnick is a practicing rabbi.

Im with Bigpond cable, and the service is slow. Usually crawling at around 3-8Kb/s. I have problems with real audio timing out. I just hope telstra gets their butt into gear and connects to the new one. Chances are they wont cause its owned by Optus, which they dislike intensely. Normally its Optus borrowing Telstras network, now it might be the reverse.

Very true, i didnt see that angle on durable/non-durable goods. I reckon there is also the opportunity to raise prices one people are locked in. If anyone every needs to write a modern economics book on monopoly practices, microsoft is great example.

  7. MS Lock In on It's Official: MS Office 10 Subscription Version · · Score: 1

The worst problem I can see is that since consumers are locked in, the cost will appear cheap inially. But once everyone no longer has their old copies of MS Office, dont expect to see the price remain the same. They will slowly raise it claiming, "research and development costs", and begin extracting monopoly profit. Everyone is locked in, and will be helpless.

  8. Consumer Sentiment on It's Official: MS Office 10 Subscription Version · · Score: 1

I really think that consumers will be apprehensive about this. Even though you dont own your software, you have a licence to run it. There still is the perception that you own it. I think it will be very difficult trying to overcome this. Especially if other services are like that as well When people start seeing they are paying $20 a month to run a computer they will get very annoyed, another bill (no pun!)that comes every month they will be happy to use an old version, if they dont have an old version, they'll swtich office programs. i mean how many extra features do you need to writeup a school assignment, or you resume for a job interview?

I wrote a letter to my local member of federal parliament in australia about DVD's and a similar law we have here. He took the time to forward on a one page letter to the Attorney-General expressing my concerns that corporations were using copyright laws to enable market monopolies. When you write a letter, you have to think on their wavelength. Dont send some "you guys are all stupid letter" explain in a economic rationalist framework, and they have to listen. Essentially I said that certain software is illegal, and it allows for a monopoly to be set up. Governments hate monopolies, they always want competition etc. So there is hope, and you will be listened too if you dont send some flame mail. I wrote a email to my member about it, and he wrote a letter to the Attorney General on my behalf outlining my concerns that copyright is being used to create market monopolies. I was very impressed he took the time to write on my behalf.
Also, check out on the federal govt website on the Digital Agenda Bill on Copyright, my feeling is that code such as decss should be ok in Australia since it can be used for fair dealings.

As peoples beliefs change through time the intent of the electoral system is blurred. Im sure that considering the state would have been the all-powerful government back when the US constitution was written, the system was designed to take into account the wishes of small states. However as US politicans, esp in federal arena, beat their chest in the last hundred years about "democracy", the original intent is forgotten. Something like copyright would be totally abhorrent to this practice.
