  1. Figures.... on Pentium IV Hits 2 Ghz · · Score: 1

I just finished upgrading my motherboard and processor to an amd 1.4 ghz. The same thing happened to me with the Mac LC. Bought it two months before the LC2 came out. Well if I always waited to see what's next to come out, I'd still have that LC.

Nonetheless, the personnel officer at the Washington, DC, area discharge center wrote the words "no active duty" on my discharge papers. That characterization nearly got me reinducted, and it disqualified me from the GI Bill. This last injustice has, however, since been rectified. On 7 December 2000, I received from Randolph Air Force Base in Texas a revised discharge "from active duty," entitling me, at age 81, to the benefits of the GI Bill.

At least it seems that the army finally got things together.

When I said stealing them, I was refering to, having your own webpage with your own code (that may have a better timming alogrithm) from getting the pictures off their server, and ahead of when they want. It would be possible to use php to constantly reload the page to get the next picture, in every timezone to use in your own timing meathod, but you would still be limited to not being able to get a picture ahead of time, so your clock would be even more off than theirs.

As I see it, the pictures seem to take a long time to load, and pitty the fool who opens up a new window from that one.

It seems that this page uses a meta refresh, which in web circles has it's own considerations. But this could be improved by using php to change the refresh time based on when you load the page and the server clock. Also there could be some improvement, if they would precache the pictures, but as it seems they run them through md5 to keep you from stealing them, I doubt that precaching is possible.

I do like the nice saying (like at 1:11) and the pictures of Oregon. I come from the Beaver State and love to see pics of downtown. Overall, a good waste of time. Now if only I could make that window stay on top.

Once again you prove that you are "The Geek's Search Engine"

Now if only there was a good way to sort all these naked women. ;o)

  8. Settling? I think not. on Has The Internet Peaked? · · Score: 1

As I program, I find the Internet is becoming my most important tool. Things like mp3s and other such advances will continue to happen. The future is not written though, we cannot tell what is going to happen. However, remember that the Internet is unique, so applying any formula to it, to check its progress is a waste of time and inaccurate. For one thing, each day, more people use the Internet, than the previous day. Who knows? The next newbie who logs on today, could have the creative ideas that others need to create the next big product. At this point I believe we have only seen the very edge of what is coming. I personally predict software will become increasingly important to more items of daily use, and communication between items, will happen on the Internet. But as I said, the future is yet to be written, or shown to us, so we cannot predict what will happen.

Well as mentioned before, what does this thing cost. I can see lots of money going down the drain real quick, because when they bill, they don't do it by the minute, they do it by the page (at least right now if you use email on a United flight.) Plus they add a hefty connection fee.

Second thing is, with the seats already so small in coach, how are they going to fit a keyboard and mouse? Please make sure your tray table and keyboard are up, and your mouse is stored correctly in the pocket in front of you? That's a mouthful.

Finally which browser are they going to use? Are they going to use a commercial one or build one themselves? If they use a pre-built one, what security issues, and such will they be getting into. I can just see it now, I get on a plane, and there's a bunch of bookmarks to whitehouse.com.

Okay, so perhaps the school is selling out, for a nice Intranet, but consider this. First, if the school doesn't have the money for an Intranet, then they need to get one some way, and free is a very good price. Also since this is on a college campus, ask yourself this, isn't this going to be shown mainly on personal computers. And if so, what about the ad blockers such as ad subtract or such; by the time you are in college you should be able to figure out how to live with the ads or get rid of them. Colleges already make lots of money through advertising, and I see this as another way they are doing so. Instead of money they are getting an Intranet, but it's money they didn't have to spend. So I ask again, (looks above to the ad) is it really that different or wrong to have a service for free, because of ads?

Of course these are just my ramblings,
as a college student, what do I know?

This premise is based on the fact that you have to pay for Windows. Unfortunately Windows is very unsecure, and open to attacks, especially through netbios.

    Linux Bad.
Okay this premise must be on the fact that Linux is free. Well if that is true, what about web browsers. How much did you pay for IE or Netscape? I'm guessing not much, if you paid for it at all.

    Finally, what about other platforms?
Just because they are not Microsoft, they should be ignored?

Anyways, getting back to the string problem, yes it appears that Linux is vulnerable to this, but so is dos/windows or even other platforms. Be careful making generalizations, it shows that an assumption hasn't been thought through.

MP3.com did not ask people to pay to use their site and only made money by advertisements; as such doesn't this seem a little extreme?
