This is why college, IMHO, blows so hard. Its one thing to ask me to pay money to teach me something I want to learn. It's another to make me pay for things you're teaching me that I dont need and or care about.

I do basic IT admin work and I haven't gone out and gotten a degree. Just a long list of job related work experience. However I work in an region of the U.S. where a degree isn't going to help much anyway because there aren't high paying IT jobs unless I want to commute 2 hours every day.

The point is. Sometimes experience outweighs a degree. Sometimes you need to know math. It all depends on what you want to do.

I dont think you know who Homer Hickam is. Homer was a kid who grew up in a mining town where either you graduated high school and went to the coal mines or you got out on a football scholarship. He had a curiosity about space and rockets that could almost be described as fanaticism. His farther didn't support him, his friends initially didn't support him and only one person encouraged him, his teacher Mrs. Riley.

He performed countless experiments throughout his high school days most of which were dangerous but he never gave up.

He eventually graduated high school and went on to Virgina Tech and got a BS in Industrial engineering.

He then went into the military and got into NASA and I'm sure I'm missing things in between.

The point is, after seeing who elected to send her to space camp, the reasons become clear and make sense.

  17. #1 reason on Ask Slashdot: Why Won't Companies Upgrade Old Software? · · Score: 1

The IT admin they hired back in the early 90's hasn't gone back to school, hasn't learned one new piece of IT software or hardware since landing his job. He's very comfortable with the systems both hardware and software that are employed and he will not go out of his way to change things. In fact when the higher ups, who know nothing about computers, ask him if there are any upgrades they can do, he will proceed to list several options and then thoroughly point out their flaws and shortcomings most of which is BS. The real reason he avoids change is because he hasn't learned anything in the past 20 years and is afraid that his ineptitude will show during the transition and he will be out a job. Simple as that.
