I can't find any links on google because, honestly, I'm not sure I'm remembering it right, but.... Wasn't there a printer firmware that had a naked photo of Paula Abdul or something. I remember it was a big deal back in 1995 or so.

I used to work for a national drugstore chain (*cough CVS cough*) and we had Muzak - only it was all piped in via satellite - meaning that evenings sucked more when the store actually closed and we were stocking the shelves to.... well, crap.

Totally closed system, although many attempts were made to get around it, we ended up having to turn it down (at least we could control that much) and setting up someones boom box turned up to 11.

So you're saying that just because Google is a U.S. based corporation, they should respect the U.S. laws (obviously) and foriegn policy?

I don't think so. They're working with the Chinese in their continued censorship of the internet based on what the government wants it's citizens to see or not see. Democracy is bad. Falongong is bad. Certain other things are bad too - I don't know them all - but clearly Google is doing what it can to work with various contries - mainly based on the fact that if they don't work with China directly, China would block access to them entirely.

Google does what's right by Google - same as any individual or corporation. As long as they don't break any laws, they'll continue to do what's in their best interests.

And here I was thinking that they'd just check the referrer and make the map say whatever the referrer was hoping for - so if they came from a link in China, it would say that it was a province of China, and if it came from Tawain, it would say it was it's own country.

Personally, I'm in favor of just putting the borders on the map and leaving it blank. Or they could just let the user decide and then set a cookie....

Amen! My wife and I both thought that this was the only serious flaw in the whole movie. They mentioned that the Reevers raped women, but do the Reever traits get passed down genetically? Do they let women who they've raped live long enough to give birth? Who raises the baby Reevers? Can infants who are "beyond insanity" survive infancy? Great movie, great story, but also a serious problem w/ the Reever social structure.

First and foremost, it's a movie. It's a good one, with compelling story-telling, but it's a movie. They call it the "suspension of disbelief". How else do you explain "Battlefield Earth"?

As far as how the Reavers did anything? Based on descriptions from the series - and keeping in mind that I haven't (yet) seen the movie - it appears that Reavers are almost like wild animals - they do what they do to survive and not much more. Based on info from the series and the Firefly Wiki:

Reavers are believed by most of the 'verse to be men that went insane at the edge of space and became savage. They stared into the void beyond and became what they saw... nothing. They gave into their primal nature and all that was civilized was discarded.

And as others have pointed out:
ZOE: If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skins into their clothing and if we're very very lucky, they'll do it in that order.

As far as how they're able to work together... How do lions and other predators co-ordinate themselves and pick out the weakest animals to kill? The human "fight or flight" instinct is a leftover from our ancestors who were less evolved and lived in caves and whatnot (let's leave the whole evolution debate for another day, ok?). It stands to reason that there might be similar herd hunting instincts left over.

As for the thought of Reavers reproducing... shudder. Their form of reproduction has already been mentioned - they force some poor soul to watch as they have their way with everyone else, and wait until their mind basically snaps from the horror of it all. Good clean family fun.

The Wiki entry I've linked to above has a spoiler that starts to explain their origins.

When the series starts here, they're on episode #11 or 12 - meaning that I've already seen half the season when you're watching the first ep.

Anyone care to comment on the difference between sharing an electronic copy of the episode and passing around a VHS copy?

  7. Re:My eyes are filling with tears for the labels.. on Wal-Mart Squeezing Record Labels to Cut CD Prices · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think it depends on where you're at. Most of the Walmarts I use are Super-Walmarts in Wisconsin. They are always clean, pretty friendly, and very spacious. Yet when I was on vacation in St. Louis, I was in a normal sized Walmart that was at least 10 times over capacity. They were in serious need of a store upgrade and a few extra stores in the area.
So you may find that different people have different experiences with going into Walmarts. Big city people will probably hate them (lots of negativity toward them here in Chicago) while the less populated areas will love them.

It also has to do with the shoppers and employees. There are about at least 10 Wal-Marts here in CT, and of the ones I've been to, they all pretty much suck in terms of cleanliness and usablility. Granted, some of it is the employees (or lack of) being too busy stocking shelves/dealing with customers to do any clean up. It also doesn't help that the customers go through the stores - especially on Sundays - like a horde of locusts on a field of crops.

If I'm in a store and my kid knocks something over, one of us picks it up and puts it back. If I suddenly decide I don't need something, I either give it to the cashier and tell them or put it back - usually where it belongs. If I'm in the store with a cup of coffee and am finished, I throw it out - I don't just leave it on a shelf for someone to find 3 hours later.

Is it just me, or does a little common courtesy go a long way?

Another issue here: if the threats were investigated thoroughly before it was brought to court and whatnot, some of these troubles could be avoided.

Either way: if the school is encouraging children to rat each other out, they should be prepared to bear the cost of any and ALL legal bills that result from such activities. Set up a trust fund, cancel the football team and cheerleaders, have a bake sale, whatever - but if you're asking the students to step out on a limb, you should be there with an airbag, not a chainsaw.

  12. NDA's are your friends... on Can Companies Control What You Say After You Leave? · · Score: 1

A former employer tried to integrate a clients NDA and non-compete into "his" NDA/non-compete. When I started (as a contractor), I was only ever given the clients NDA. I was then hired full-time, and was never asked to sign anything. The day I left (on good terms), I was reminded to honor the various NDA's and whatnot. I didn't remember until the next day that I hadn't signed any of them...

The important thing to remember is to review any and all paperwork they make you sign when you start. I'm always more than happy to sign NDA's, but I always read them and occasionally check them with a lawyer friend. A co-worker at the company above didn't like some of the language, so after checking with her lawyer, she got quite creative with her black marker. They didn't say a word, just accepted it. (which means that they probably didn't even notice her changes - guess they now owe her the Crown Jewels.... :)

If you're discussing them (anywhere: public, private, in your head) they can't control what you say. As long as you don't breach your NDA (and it doesn't sound like you did) then you should be fine, so don't worry about it.

The company I work at is fairly young, and about 1/4 of us have kids of varying ages. I've never heard it mentioned that we could/would offer one, but I know for a fact that just about every parent in the office would gladly bring their kids to work if there was a daycare on the premises. Just being able to go have lunch with them, or drop by for a visit when I'm sick of looking at code and need a break would probably do wonders for my productivity.

Many parents are concerned about the quality of daycares in general. I myself don't like the thought of dropping my kids off at one of those giant, corporately run free-range kid farms (aka "daycare center"), so when we found a home day-care, it was a blessing. If my company offered daycare, they'd have to make sure all the parents are pleased with their choice of people to work/run there, especially since all the parents would have very ready access to the facilities. If they do this, everyone would end up happy, so what's wrong with that?
