Game manufacturers could implement a way so you can point at people in the game or freelook and you could press a key to vote against that person.
I know counter-strike has the scripting ability to build one of those. You could just bind a key to an alias that votes against ppl you're pointed at.
That totally sucks, why do they need to scapegoat a ton of other companies because their f*cked up kids (who are just plain crazy) killed a bunch of people. "Hi my relatives died, lets steal some innocent companies money now and become rich" - thats the attitude they seem to have.
I think Chris Rock said it best:
"Whatever happened to CRAZY. What happened to crazy, what you can't be crazy no more? Did we illiminate crazy from the dictionary? F*ck the records, f*ck the movies... CRAZZZYYY. When I was a kid, they used to seperate the crazy kids from everybody. When I was a kid the crazy kids went to school in a little ass bus; they had a class at the end of the school and they used to get out of school at 2:30 just in case they were crazy - they would only hurt other crazy kids." -- Chris Rock
I think this guy makes a lot of good points. SSH was created by these people and another organization has taken their work and is giving it out for free.
I run an exchange server at my company (about 150 users) and it seems to be a good solution. I will admit that we have to reboot the mail server weekly, but the features that it provides are great and it's extremely easy to manage. It interacts with Outlook in ways other servers cannot do, and it adds user friendliness to users on Outlook.
For a place with 1000 people, you would need a pretty bulky box to be able to run exchange, most likely. We have a Dual pII Xeon 550 with 2 gigs of ram and it's slower than my p133 at home, because of all the freakin resource sucking services that exchange installs. A place with 1000 people would require some major juice, I would think.
I've always been a huge nintendo fan, and yet I've always enjoyed sonic the hedgehog. Does this mean that I will be able to get Sonic for the nintendo? woo hoo!
Until recently I would have agreed with this article. I hold an IT job and until we got a new MIS manager I wouldn't hardly do anything (except read slashdot). Some days I would do pretty much nothing all day and others I would be working my a$$. The days when nobody would need support help I would sit around doing nothing and it was very boring. My bosses were all people who knew absolutely nothing about computers.
Recently I got a new MIS manager (who does know something about computers thank god) and suggested I start writing an intranet site, which I've been working on for the last couple of months, constantly maintaining and fixing bugs for the stupid people at my work and all kinds of fun stuff.. But don't worry, I still get a decent dose of slashdot every day:).
This may be a bit off-subject, but.. I have one of the original Athlon 700's and an Abit KA7 mobo, but I can't set the multiplier. Does the processor have a multplier lock on it or is the the mobo that does.. and is there any (easy) way to go around that without speeding up the fsb.
The IT labor shortage is very real and I have noticed. A while back I was setting up a computer for somebody to do a presentation to another company, and I was asked to tell who I was and what position I was.. when I told them I was the IT Support Professional, they were offering me jobs in Seattle. The company that I currently work for had no IT department before me (and now one other person is in it) and they had about 140 people. I have no idea how they survived.
Thats stupid, the only reason why I bought a VCR instead of a DVD player is so I could make recordings. If they do that then I'm sure many people will not purchase VCR's. Even still.. people will find ways around the protection, whether it consists of purchasing an old VCR or some mod chip dealio.
We all know that Linux is a much more stable Operating System than Windows, in nearly every sense, but for the most part Windows is probably more practical for average computer users. I mean, if we switched everybodys computer to Linux here, people wouldn't get any work done because theyde be asking themselves "What does 'login:' mean?" and my job as an IT professional would be busier than ever. I do believe (I could be wrong) that Windows2000 is a lot more expensive than NT4 was. It costed us 270 dollars for a full version of that, and it would have costed us like 200 for an NT-to-2000 upgrade. If we would have gone with Linux it would have been 0! I guess it depends on what the business is doing and how bad you need a stable OS.
Windows 2000 definately seems stable to me, nearly as stable as nt4, with many of the features of 98.
Although this may be a bit off topic.. I am just curious, who has gone there and what kind of cool stuff is at Defcon.. I've heard a few interview speeches in mp3 that sound cool. I may see you there next year:)
hmm.. they used to.. well there have been a couple of new ones recently added to efnet that may not care if you have identd running.. irc.ef.net, irc.plur.net, irc.mpl.net, irc.lsl.com.. those two last ones havent been working for me though.
this story was posted already, yesterday.
Anyways, I think this is f'ed up. Seems like a huge violation of our privacy.
If this new system is automated at all, somebody will develop a cheat so they don't have to pay a deposit...

that will work, but then instead of needing insane bandwidth you would need a box with an extra 50mhz of processing juice to run the game :).
Bearshare (windows gnutella client) rocks. I can find just about anything I am looking for.

Why is that article (the one at http://www.osdn.com/conf/kernel/conf_index.shtml) dated March 30 - 31 2001? Last I checked, thats another 2 and a half months away.
so this thing is implying that bug-fixing isnt working?
I agree that there are a lot of rude and disrespectful people out there, but people should be informed about this.

Bush: Gore says he invented the internet, so why does every internet address have a 'W' in front of it!
bah
Bush: What's a technology? What's an encryption? My daddy was the president so that means I will win.
this news has been posted already (about 10 months ago).. check it out http://slashdot.org/articles /00 /01/08/0811216.shtml
