    Factoring 100 requires a 7bit quantum computer. We've successfully operated a 4 bit computer to factor 15. You really think it will take 20 years more to get those next 3 bits?

    Actually, draconian birth control policies have the best proven effectiveness. Higher living standard comes in second. Forced sterilization has even better results, but has only been tried on limited scales.

    It's probably to the biosphere's benefit to escape the planet before the big flameout. So short of us taking them with us when we leave, it has little hope. So there's a lower limit on the size of the human society that will result in the biosphere being better off in the long run.

    Why? The US population isn't that high. Tax in proportion to population would require India and China to pay half of whatever tax we set, while the US paid only about 6%.

    Yes, as I attempted to clarify in the thread, I was really interested in personhood, as that's both what the parent posted about, and what I was actually interested in the answer to. 'life begins' is an unfortunate common proxy for 'personhood begins', and conflating the two makes the science side of the argument useless, so I'm sorry for the habit-typo.

    Personhood is really what's of interest ... when does the thing that could become a person ... do so (and thus obviously gain the rights to protection from murder from our society).

    Well, it's obviously all rumor until the hardware hits the street, but all of the potential display manufacturers for ipad3 are now bragging about their 2560 displays and clearly trying to win apple's affection. That wasn't true during ipad 2's timeline, so I'd say this makes it much more likely.

    You'd probably have to stretch that out to 120 months after earned, at least. Otherwise you just encourage funding things that can't be uncovered until after the payout period. Maybe even 16 years so that your efforts have to be proven capable of surviving a couple of presidential administrations.

    It's headed for the thin client model because the internet now has high enough bandwidth to effectively stream any application, and the client (phone/tablet) has the display and processor to display it. Moving the computation off the client is about control, not performance.
