Federal funding was ended for new embryonic cell lines. Research involving existing lines was not banned or restricted at all.

You were correct about the separation of research, of course, but recall that private funding spiked. Less funds total than if the federal government funded it? Probably. Effective ban? No.

That's certainly not a complete ban, without a stretch of imagination applied.

I use NoScript for the same purpose. I tried Flashblock, and found it wanting. Not that it was bad, I just preferred NoScript's interface and performance thus far.

Regardless, I highly recommend people using some form of flash blocking, so kudos on the article. For those unaware: Flash is how most of the current crop of po-pups manage to circumvent Mozilla's pop-up suppression.

I have to point out that the parking lot is ALSO owned by the shopping centers. This means they still have the rights to eject harrassing people.

Also, these people are NOT advertizing on or near their competitor's place of business. They are advertising on a separate webspace. The only connection is made through a third-party piece of software on the client side.

If you don't want that function, don't allow that software to be installed. The court's finding was on the functionality (showing alternate adds for the content of a website), NOT whether or not the program should be installed.

How can you claim MS's testing dept tests code more thoroughly than the open source guys? Perhaps you mean the programmers who wrote the code specifically. That I could belive. However, there are tons of people who enjoy fixing or finding bugs, and provide hundreds of man hours of testing a day. That's one of OpenSource's primary strengths.

    As a general aside:
I have had multiple programs consistently crash Win2K. Certain old DOS progs, but also win32 programs have done it. Some of these worked in 9x, and some crashed both. Not drivers: apps.

This discourse should not devolve into mindless Microsoft bashing. (it's going to, I fear)Especially not when careful argument can do so much more. However,

MS die-hards need to admit that some of this criticism is deserved. Heck, MS just did... "50% Aren't OUR fault, we swear!"

maybe we should ignore precisely half of all complaints from here out?

If they can demonstrate that something in the emulator is, in fact, violating some bloody copy–protection scheme (whether it works or no) OR if they can demonstrate that the emulator itself is primarily used for violation, then, the software itself can be considered a violation of the copyrights, according to the DMCA (section 1201 applies, as I recall) DMCA at http://www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf

(yes, this is ridiculous, but it is the current law.)

Similarly, those who do not defend their copyrights religiously, lose them to public domain. Both of these factors combine to make the emulation world a headache. Why else do you think these products are being so furiously persued? They know full-well that they aren't going to make a killing on the "lost sales" from the ROMs.

Piracy, I do not condone, but I think that Fair-Use should, and frankly does include using that which you already own in any applicable media, including emulation.
