  1. Re:It was never copy protection on Injunction Against 2600 for DeCSS · · Score: 1

I am sorry, but i think your sadly wrong. This is like saying that there is a hardware region protection in a DVD player, to make sure the disk can only be played in its region. I hate to break it to you but anyone who spends 15 minutes of browsing on the net can crack his PC DVD player to work with any region, and disable the screen warp feature buildinto DVD players to prevent them being copied unto VHS tapes. For hardware players, such as sony, philips, and samsung make, its a little harder, you have to go to a place like www.dvdkits.com, and open your DVD player, and mess with some chips and/or cables, and your free of any copie AND region protection as well... Ive got local DVD stores here to who will fix just about any DVD player for about 100 USD including components and labor.

Now if this 'security' was so easy to hack, its common now amongst most 'knowledgable' DVD users, why do you feel this reading of keys off a DVD drive will be any harder? Its just a matter of tapping into the DVD decoder chip, and reading the key from memory. Thats the same method they use to make DVD players warp and region free, so its a known and proven implimentation.

That also is my main problem with this whole DVD CCA crackdown, they will prevent me from playing DVD's on my nice linux box, while i could be copying and riping DVD's all day long if i wanted to. There are already plenty of DVD rippers out there in the warez & dvd scene (DVDRip by Drink Or Die, and some other tool by EvilIso), so they lost that battle, so please please mister DVD CCA, let me play the material i bought and paid for!

Parodies on known names are perfectly legal. Microslutsux.com would be a perfectly legal names, as long as they dont pretend to be a true microsoft site, but present (anything near obvious) them selves are a real parodie. Think of 'Naked gun' and other parodies..

The trademark/copyright infriction comes into places if they try to setup a linux site, with the real Linux(Tm) name doing linux stuff.

This would obviously be a difference to a parodie.

However linus has done this kind of thing before, to prevent people from misusing the linux name, think of the (old?) owner of linux.co.uk, who was abusing the linux name and domain, linus used his Tm there in a benifitial way as well. But most of the time, he'll allow just about anything to happen, as long as it doesnt 'hurt' the 'linux(tm)' name.

  3. John Carmack's Role? on Matrox to fund DRI Development · · Score: 4

Is it just me, or do more people get the feeling that the magic 'carmack touch' was applied here?

In the matroxuser.com sniplet it sums up the history of the matrox & linux community relationship, from the first matrox driver in 1992, upto the GLX project, where it -clearly- states the nature and development of carmack's role in the GLX project. And if you would expand this history line with 'the present' it would be this order:

    Start of GLX
    Carmack messing with GLX
    Matrox Funding GLX development.

Now doesnt that make a great coinsidence? Specialy considering the weight carmack's word usualy carries in the OpenGL / Games scene, it wouldnt supprise me to find that he was the final drop for matrox to go ahead.

If this all is true? donno, but if so, kuddles to u carmack for helping this to happen!

It was anounced previously that 3.3.6 would quickly follow up (reportedly @ the same time ) as the 3.9.17 snapshot. This baby has been on the mirrors for a while now so is ready for test driving. 4.0 is supposedly released in Q2 of 2000, and judging by the buggyness (got a geforce, it worked but netscape and many motif&other apps crashed like a feather in a 2^10 G vacum space), they better take there time fixing it. I'd rather have a working release later, then a buggy-as-hell(Tm) release now. Also keep in mind that all the agp and DRI hooks for the kernel are also in way-beta-stage and likely to crash ur machine on there own..

So all in all, a great pre release, showing great potential, but for a production envirioment, this pre release just doesnt cut it yet, ill just w8 for 2 months for the final :)

Linux has a very good reputation when it comes to mp3 stream serving. The best utility for this is (a href="http://www.icecast.org">icecast. The web site includes pointers on what other software ull need (decoders such as bladeenc).

The hardware is quite easy to, a P II 400 will cope easely as long as you give it enough ram. 256Mb would be a nice amount to start out with.. Mailing lists and websites wont realy impact on performance that much.
The main problem you will encounter however is bandwidth usage. For a good quality stream you need 128kbit - dual isdn .. thats 14 K a second PER listener. So its very important to decide on a good speed (64Kbit is still decent quality) ... or offer several streaming speeds (modem / isdn / cable), and make sure you do you do the math, what type of line are you on, and how many do you want to serve. Suppose you want to be able to serve 100 clients, with a full quality stream.. thats 100 * 14 K/sec .. thats 140K/second .. this will easely eat up a full t1 .. suppose you want to grow and serve over 1000 clients ? ... well u get the picture :)
