There are a lot of pretty cool delphi (object pascal) hackers out there, and tons, tons, TONS of Windows apps written in Delphi just waiting, and begging to be ported to linux. And thank god for that:)
Put datacenter behind a firewall, the webserver (advanced server or the like) on dmz and have a secure "pipe" to the datacenter server where you database resides - no need to use the datacenter server as your webserver too, if you can afford datacenter server, you can afford a separate machine acting as a webserver.
Just my opinion, buy hey, I'm a linux guy...
When I buy new hardware I usually check various review sites first, but since I've never had any problems with my IBM drives, I've just bought them without checking... Big mistake.
I am also the victim of a failing IBM drive just like the author of this article...
So I checked my usual review site, c'net - and wow, take a look at the 60GB drive reviews! They are horrible! 50/50 for good/bad!
Even though, c'net themselves rates the 75GB drive as 8/10 - wow...
My two maxtor drives are very good though, but they do make a bit more noise than the IBMs - but rather that...
This is one of the worst things I know, SpyWare - I simply hate freeware/shareware/ad-ware programs that use SpyWare - I recently installed KaZaa (p2p filesharing) - but 5 minutes after, not having run it, I uninstalled it, because it had installed Cydoor software on my computer (when I explicitly told it not to install it). I removed Cydoor - but then KaZaa wouldn't run.
Worried if you have SpyWare? Get ad-aware from LavaSoft - it's free and reliable.
Or you can just check your programs here - just enter the name of the software...

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 - The one with a 32MB AGP card, 15" screen with 1600x1200 res. Now there is a niiice machine!
I had a hard time installing linux on it though - but since the 2.4 kernel came out I had no probs =)
Pity that they (supposedly) don't support linux any more.
At work we've been talking to IBM about a large serverpark running Linux. The lead salesman (AIX dude), said that, and I'm quoting loosely, that Linux was great. It was a great way to pave the way for AIX.
I was shocked.
Well, I assume that we're talking the USA here. What speed were the accounts connected at? Anyway what I wanted to say, is that in Denmark there are three good DSL suppliers at this time, Tiscali Denmark (formerly World Online Denmark, formerly Image Scandinavia), CyberCity and TDC Tele Danmark. I pay app. 80 US$ a month for 512 kbps both upstream and downstream, I think that's a pretty fair price. Although I think it will get cheaper, there are a few more DSL providers rolling out their arms here, such as Orange and some smaller ones.
What I'm really looking forward to is Finnish VDSL Systems to start in Denmark. I talked to the Danish manager, he said 10mbps both ways, and that he'd seem 20mbps both ways;)
There are many different views on this matter... -My personal view is that some spoof-domains are ok, but fuck[inserttrademark].com is not ok... Imagine what the New York Times would say if someone published a newspaper named "Fuck New York Times"...
But hey, let's see what the courts say...:P
If you are interested in such predictions, read Peter F. Hamiltons "Nights Dawn" trilogy, The Reality Dysfunction, The Neutronium Alchemmist, and The Naked God. It's a good 3600 pages all in all, but it's some of the most amazing and believable sci-fi I've read in a LONG time! If you disregard the story, the tech they have is really cool, and fairly realistic!
He even made a book about the known universe, based on what we wrote in the trilogy. I haven't read it, but I am going to! The book is The Confederation Handbook.
I hightly it!
I had a good laugh at some of the stuff in the article! I wouldn't say there is a lot of accuracy though... I mean clean the living room with a hose? Wood, brick and stone is too expensive, so we build in something else (poured plastic)? Óh well he does mention concrete... Hmmm. And oh, I still shave the normal way. Men and women 70 years old, look as if they were 40? "Cooking as an art is only a memory in the minds of old people" - my dinners take long... And judging by my results (compared to my wifes) it is _still_ an art;)
Well, it's still a good and very amusing article! Read it!:)
I wish people would stop spending their time on Slashdot trying to prove others wrong, and instead perhaps try and give their own insight about a certain topic. It would definitely make for a much better experience.
You should not take critique personally in a forum such as/. - the forums are a place where we mentally challenge one another, trying to argument pros and cons etc. This is a good thing, this is actually "discussion-training".
Ok, so some people has to flame and troll, but there has to be room for that too, that is also part of the learning process, here we learn to distinguish valid from invalid critique and so forth.
I also get tired of/. forums from time to time, so I just read the articles and that's it, until there is an article that tickles my interest enough to let the scrollbar wonder down to the forums.
I used a few BBS's in my time too, at least three of them were in GREENLAND where I grew up:) Yes, Greenland, far north, HUGE island, app. 55.000 people, biggest city: Nuuk, population app. 15.000 - We didn't use BBS's outside of Greenland much, since the cheapest phone rate was for Denmark, which at the time was >US$ 2 a minute:P

Erh! It wasn't netscape! The original RSS DTD was actually done by Lars Marius Garshol (larsga@dontspamhim.ifi.uio.no) - sorry for that one! Although later RSS DTDs was done by a netscape man...
It's not too late, just ...about time ;)

10 machines with SANArray FFx-2 from Mylex - that's up to 9TB per machine... It writes up to 270MB/s...
;)
Set up a Round Robin DNS system - and write a small application to run on the servers that makes the DNS point to the next machine when it's full...
Put a DVDWriter on each machine and viola
It's DCMA!
:) Makes perfect sense ;)
