In Alaska, on Highway 1, in a mountain pass near Gunsight mountain there is a particularly straight and level stretch of road. 7. The problem with MOOC on Coursera To Offer K-12 Teacher Development Courses · · Score: 1

MOOC is great, don't get me wrong. But the problem with it, as I see it, is if everybody learns the material in the exact same way, it limits a societies problem solving abilities because everyone then uses identical problem solving approaches. Richard Feynman found that he had an advantage over his colleagues in some instances by having knowledge of a different set of tools. So as long as MOOC doesn't wind up becoming "Everything 101" but rather becomes a diverse set of courses allowing many choices by students, then it will have a chance of becoming highly successful.

After the PVC paint is applied and dried, you have an inkjet printer modified to print on a broad flat surface. It prints a conductive ink pattern, solving the problem.

A refinement to enhance longevity and conductivity would be to have the print head be followed by a laser to sinter the metallic particles into a single monolithic conductor.

  11. Off the shelf, no-programming-required solution on Ask Slashdot: How Can a Blind Singer 'See' the Choirmaster's Baton? · · Score: 1

I almost had an answer but then I realized there was a big flaw, but here goes anyways. 1. As others here suggested, place infra-red LEDs on the tips of the batons. 2. Use a video camera focused on where the batons will be throughout the performance and set the contrast really high. The LEDs will appear very brightly on any video monitor. 3a. (flawed part) Use a blind tongue display (TDU) which enables the singer to "see" the batons, except now the singer is no longer a singer, they are a hummer because they've got a piece of hardware stuck to their tongue. Still might be feasible to adapt the Brainport Vision TDU to another sensitive location. 3b. There may be some piezoelectric displays for the blind coming onto the market that could be used in order to feel the moving baton image.

  12. Hydrogen is valuable NOT as a fuel source on Big Advance In Hydrogen Production Could Change Alternative Energy Landscape · · Score: 3, Interesting

While hydrogen can be used as a fuel, it makes more sense for it to be used in ammonia production. The #2 most-produced chemical is ammonia and it is most commonly produced using natural gas which produces CO2 as a by-product.

I've played with a little both Arduino and Raspberry Pi and both are neat and have their strengths and weaknesses. Arduino is perfect for sensing things. It's normally programmed in C and it's a little cheaper than Raspberry Pi and has less performance. Raspberry Pi is neat but be aware that it runs Linux and as such it is not a real-time operating system. There are small lags so that if you need to respond to the outside world with utmost immediacy you are still better off with Arduino. The raspberry pi is normally programmed in Python and your Python scripts can monitor sensor inputs and send data out, turn lights on, etc.
