  1. Mexico already has this on Scientists Develop Chocolate That Won't Melt At High Temperatures · · Score: 2

I thought that was the idea behind Nestle's Don Carlos V. Ten years ago I bought some in Mexico and left the bars in the car but they remained solid. Also, this chocolate is not gritty and is available in the U.S. (At least in some markets)

  7. Let's see... on Ask Slashdot: What Stands In the Way of a Truly Solar-Powered Airliner? · · Score: 1

The most you can hope to get out of direct sunlight is 1.2 kw per m2, but more likely it's going to be 1 kw per m2.

The wing area is 510 square meters. Let's say that that you will cover just the wings with solar panels. Figuring 1 kw per m2, that's 510 kw, which is I'm estimating is close to 600 hp. I think you need more than 50 times that to operate a 747. Consider a DC-6 flew with nearly 10,000 hp and it's much smaller and slower than a 747.

You should consider shopping around because for the bare panels you can easily find 300 watt panels for $400 in the U.S. And if you estimate the installation and other goodies, let's say that doubles the cost, you are still talking about $5000 installed.

  13. Re:2nd Summary on Canadian Scientists Bind High-Temp Superconductor Components With Scotch Tape · · Score: 2

Yep, totally agree. the scotch tape superconductivity is helping superconductivity work at 80 Kelvin. The Carbon soaked in water, then dried is superconducting at 300 fucking kelvin. No scotch tape required! The cool thing about this is, if true, you could verify it in your kitchen.

  14. Re:Bacteria that can eat this? on Wood Pulp Extract Stronger Than Carbon Fiber Or Kevlar · · Score: 1

I disagree. The Mosquito was one of the best twin engine planes made during WWII. It was made almost entirely of wood. Wood is subject to rot, insects and other problems but for it's purpose it was the best material for the job: Non-strategic, easy to work with--they had cabinet makers making the aircraft. Sure, you don't see many Mossies remaining today but they lasted as long as the needed to.

I think that even if a CNC-eating bacteria were to be developed, reasonable precautions could be made. It's unlikely that a warplane, for example, is going to fly through a fog of CNC-eating bacteria and fall out of the sky. It's probably a process that would take months or years. Keeping CNC dry would slow the process as well.
