If you don't have an office in your home, get a different job. Close the door and make sure your spouse/family knows that between XX:XX and XX:XX hours, you're working, you're not home.
It takes some getting used to...but they'll get it eventually. Just keep the door closed.
...do we really need Gartner to tell us that Vista is crap - one year and 3+ months after it was release?
Statements like "Users want a smaller Windows that can run on low-priced -- and low-powered -- hardware..." make me wonder if these guys graduated at the top of their class at Captain Obvious University.
Additionally they state "...increasingly, users work with "OS-agnostic applications..." - is there a reason for them to not just say "web apps"? And how about the fact that most large organizations have so much legacy code that even if Windows development stopped entirely today, you wouldn't get rid of all of that desktop apps for many, many, many years.
""Apple introduced its iPhone running OS X," no, it's a variant, which is a code-word for sub-set.
Consider that the gov't agency has a blank check in the name of "national security" - you don't think they have massive storage capabilities?
A petabyte of storage from EMC^2 is $4m. It's not that much of a stretch to believe they have 10-20 of these things sitting in that room...or even something bigger/better...
I was pretty underwhelmed after spending 4 hours downloading Leopard from Apple Developer Connection and the installing it at 5am. Nothing really appeared different. I should note that I've only had a mac for 4 months. I'm generally happy (though I spend more time in Vista 64 than in OS X (work...NET)) with the Mac, but I'd be pretty pissed off if I ran out to an Apple store, shelled out $129 to see a pretty reflecting dock menu at the bottom.
XCode is still a pile of crap compared to Visual Studio.NET.
Hey - don't knock Buffalo - some of are happy with our new Jumping-Slug Sabres logo (http://www.sabres.com/). Really though... You can make plenty of $ in Buffalo (and considering the cost of living here, you'd be a fool to go work in a high-demand area.) Just pick a more in-demand technology...
In the long-run I think Postgres will eat MySQL's lunch because now, there's a native Windows version *and* the whole dual licensing crap will make most small commercial software developers move away from MySQL (I know I won't be developing any applications (all non-PHP work) using MySQL)
So long as I can bill you $500/hr and I'm given 16 billable hours for each line of code I write to make sure there are no bugs.
Doctors make a boatload of cash because A) Expertise B) If they make a mistake, people can die or become sicker, etc. C) High Probability of lawsuits if they make a mistake D) High Risk, High Return.
How Apple's iPod is innovative: Sleek design combined with a great navigation system. I own a Creative Zen Micro. It's small, maybe you can call it sleek (not by iPod standards), but the navigation system is absolutely terrible. Which is why I can't even give it away to my father (he gave it back, too confusing.)
Innovation isn't all about coming up with something brand new - in fact, most 'inventions' aren't ground-breaking (read a book on Triz, it spells out the various levels of innovation.)
It sounds like Apple's simply trying to cash-in quickly before their 'bubble' bursts. Don't get me wrong, the iPod is a great little device, but at some point the buzz + demand / supply will stabilize and the rest of the non-innovative companies will play copy & catch-up.
Give people a reason to use Linux instead of Windows. We all know the free-ness factor is not a driving factor to most people. The shiny-ness doesn't play a huge part anymore. People buy a PC, it comes with Windows. They don't associate paying $ with the OS. XP / OS X are already 'very pretty' - being another runner-up or also-ran-as won't help.
Give people a killer app that doesn't exist in the Windows world. Something that the average joe will say 'wow, that saves so much time...' or 'wow, I didn't know it was that easy to do that'
It's the parent's responsibility to say what their kids should and shouldn't buy. If I feel that I can give my kid $50 and know that he's not going to buy something stupid (drugs, etc.) then I trust that he knows right from wrong enough that some violent game won't make him decide to go postal in the real world.
How about forward-engineering it? Try and add a feature to the game that doesn't already exist (and doesn't make use of any built-in scripting system/tools, etc.) That's the only way you'll really learn what's going on in there. Reading code in and of itself doesn't mean you underestand what it does. But if you have to change the code, there's no doubt that you'll figure out how (at least a part of) it works!
Most policitians say one thing when they really mean another. So what's their alterior motive for wanting to take away control from the US? Also, is it really that good of an idea? Design by committee...and all that?
and it's hard to find anyone that will accept a pre-order for them, I don't buy the argument that consoles are losing interest. It took me a while to find a pre-order package that my web hosting company is going to be giving away...
I don't understand why these people even have the right (or privilege) to use a PC in a prison environment. It just amazes me to think that the state & federal governments spend our money on technology for use by people who have violated the law.
Personally I'd rather see more innovation on the I/O side of the PC house. PCI-X is still only 133mhz. I'd rather see technology that would improve thing such as:
- If doing a large file transfer - requiring high disk I/O, my machine shouldn't make me walk away because it's unusable during the transfer.
I think they have more immediate needs than being able to surf the web at an acceptable speed. The assumption that people in developing worlds even have access to the internet is a stretch.
Well said. I run 2003 on my laptop because of XP's lack of support for multiple sites in IIS 5.1... All in all, Windows 2003 is an amazing piece of work.
I mean really - who cares if Microsoft isn't going to release new service packs for VB6. They're at SP 6 so far. If they haven't fixed a critical bug that is causing you headaches by now, they never will. So you've either found work-arounds for such situations or moved to another platform.
who gives a shit? I mean really. People get a life. I mean a real life. This isn't a troll. Go out and get a woman, see a movie, hey maybe even get laid. *sighs*

What did you do exactly? I've seen that in the server logs a few times, but can't figure out how people manage to make that error come up. Thanks

Having watched hockey since I was 8, this is natural for me. For hockey-n00bs (like my wife), they need to be taught to do this.

By introducing a free entry-level product, Oracle intends to get more developers and students familiar with its namesake database.
More like, intends to get more developers familiar with its namesake database to increase supply of Oracle-experienced staff and therefore lower cost.

I'm still waiting for a sub-$200 phone that'll integrate with *SOME* calendaring system from Sprint.
make this type of stuff completely irrelevent for techies anyway.

I own a copy of Trillian 3.1 Pro and I can say that it's the best thing since sliced bread
