My room mate would have more problems, as she gets games on a regular basis. But that's why God made the Playstation 2, right?
Salesman: "You'll save $100 if you don't have Winderz(tm) installed on this computer. But to play the newest games, you'll have to go buy that $299.95 Playstation 2."
Great argument folks. Glad to see the gene pool in the Unix world is getting better;-) And don't bring up the technical superiority of the PS2 - I still play Starcraft & UT and don't need the latest & greatest GeForce 500000000 card.
The idea that you could see "your" desktop from another workstation is just a dream in the Windows world.
I suppose you've never heard of VNC/PCAnywhere/Terminal Server Client (for those of use running NT/2K Server)
Many of you hate Windows because it's mainstream (whether you admit it or not is another story). Just like many people *LOVE* music bands until they make it big and become very popular. Then, as many of the "original" fans realize that the band has become popular/famous, etc - they no longer feel a part of "something special" and then accuse them of "selling out." And then they start all over again. Come on - think about it, all Linux users are part of this tight-knit group - for now - each with their distro preferences, etc.
This issue, coupled with the fact that many people are jealous/angry of Microsoft's "power" over many parts of the IT industry blurrs many of your opinions.
Don't take this as flamebait/trolling. I hated Microsoft until I realized the reason - control. People hate being told what to do, what to use. Unfortunately, some things in society lend themselves to this type of thing. It's much easier to write 1 application and have it work on *most* consumer computers. Microsoft's development tools are much more refined than Linux's (from my own limited personal knowledge) - though Borland's recent release of Kylix is a step in the right direction.
Sure, Linux is making strides - but don't forget who made PCs easy enough to use that many people bought them, lowering the cost of PCs/parts.
Yes, I have some experience with different flavors of Linux, Unix, etc. It's just an operating system folks - like any other - including Microsoft Windows;-) Sometimes I wonder if some of you are the equivalent of the blind-faith sports fans, where their team can commit no foul and any other team is hated with a passion.
Why is it that nobody goes into an uproar when someone finds a bug in Debian? "Well it doesn't slow down the internet to a crawl like Code Red." - THAT'S BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE IS RUNNING DEBIAN! If 50% of web-enabled PCs were running Debian, etc - you'd have the same damned problem.
Eh - when Tribes 2 came out, the GeForce 3 wasn't anywhere near shipping. I didn't see anywhere on the box "GeForce3 required for decent framerates" Recommended specs are supposed to be for mid-high level graphic details at 25+ fps as far as I'm concerned. No bother though, the CD is under a stack of older games. I'm still content to play UT:Tactical-Ops and Starcraft.;-)
I think an Athlon 650, 256mb RAM, GeForce2 GTS/32mb is fine enough hardware don't you? Meets & exceeds the minimum requirements. Latest drivers, blah blah. I can get 80fps in UT with full detail. Yes, UT is an old game. But it was never designed the GeForce/NVIDIA cards anyway, so it's hacked to death to make it work with non Voodoo cards. The 3DMark 2000 tests ran smoother at the highest resoltuion/detail levels than Tribes 2 on this machine.
Latest/"fastest" drivers, tried overclocking the vid card, processor and got very little performance increase. So sorry - you missed the 10K+ posts in the Dynamix forums 2 days after official release about the fuq ups in Tribes 2, least of which were performance problems.
Tribes 2 does suck. The product release was a complete disaster. Took them weeks to make it barely loadable/playable. I waited a year for T2 to be released, pre-ordered, next-day'ed and what did I get? A beta/alpha product who's minimum/recommended specifications were so unrealistic - my machine surpassed the recommended setup and I still received sub 30fps, sometimes as low as 10fps.
"In a preferred embodiment, the user directs the Internet browser to a Internet clinical services provider web site computer and logs in to the site using an identifier and a secure password and optionally makes a selection of the type of servicing desired, wherein an automatically-executing software package encapsulated within a markup language communication unit deliverable across the Internet is delivered, to the user computer, the automatically-executing software package being adapted to perform security, management, or optimization functions on the user computer."
Isn't this what EVERY web email service has been doing for years? On the IE/Windows platform, isn't this what every ActiveX control does on web pages (i.e. Win2K Terminal Server client ActiveX control.) What ABOUT JAVA!
Yet another "newbie" question just like Are High-End CPUs Worth The Money?
Come on folks. We're technical people. Do your own research and stop wasting our time.
Yes, AGP is better than PCI (No Shit?)
Yes, DVD is better than a plain old CD-ROM (DUH!)

We're all IT professionals. There's no question that there are some sysadmins/wedmasters, etc that work at high profile companies. Get all the IT staff at your company to go along with you and take down your company's site with a "We'll be back as soon as Dmitry is freed" page. Sure, you'd catch hell from the higher ups, but if everyone's in on this, they can't fire everyone;-) You'd get the attention of the CEOs, etc who are the source of most politicians campaign piggybanks....... Just a thought. Too bad we can't stand as one like the unions of yesterday....or hell, the Europeans still do it..but America has lost it.
Would encrypted filesharing "solve" this problem? Encrypting the search & result strings, & user file lists. I'd love to get the FBI to arrest the MPAA & RIAA board members for reverse engineering or breaking the encryption. Or does something like this already exist? Or what about using PPTP? If anyone's interested in pursuing this idea and have some experience developing filesharing apps - let me know.

The fact is that NO system is 100% secure. If someone wants to screw with your system, they will find a way to do it. "If your system's properly configured, you can make sure it's secure." - To the best of YOUR knowledge it's secure. Unless you poured over every single line of code, considered every possible way to hack/attack the system, it is impossible to ensure absolute security.
Ok, so Microsoft's system isn't the most secure, deal with it if you're a Windows user or switch to a "more secure" operating system. If you're a *nix user, stop fighting the "big bad power" - it isn't your issue. People have the instinct of always fighting the "King of the hill" (i.e. Microsoft, Intel) and cheering on the underdog (i.e. Linux, Netscape, AMD). And yes, Linux is an underdog in the desktop/business-end user market. When Linux becomes "idiot-proof" for the most part ala Windows, then you'll actually get end-users & businesses to use it. Then again do you hardcore Linux guys really want hundreds of thousands of end-users asking stupid "newbie" questions? Sure you can tell them to RTFM, unfortunately that won't get you an Microsoft-like user-base. Alright..enough ranting - now mod me down.
I'm a Windows user by choice, I've tried Linux and I really did not like the GUI. It wasn't (at the time) as polished as Windows - who knows now. I actually prefer QNX's interface (http://get.qnx.com) over Windows', but there aren't quit enough applications for QNX just yet....
That's not really that impressive - lnx4win does that for Windows users and QNX (www.qnx.com) also does it....I believe BeOS was one of the first OSes to do that however.
How do you justify an $800 mouse to play Quake 3? Even at half the price, it's WAY more expensive than any standard mouse - even the Intellimouse Explorer I paid $80 for is cheap when compared to this and only marginally less accurate if at all. What about neck injuries?Save yourself $720+, buy an intellimouse explorer (you can find it cheaper nowadays or a cheaper knock-off) and buy a GeForce 3 when they are released.....and you should still have a few bucks left over for a couple of cases of beer.
I haven't ventured into Linux since I had the NVIDIA Riva128 which was not supported by XFree86 - So please excuse my ignorance on this subject. Does NVIDIA have any plans to release a 3D (GL?) Accelerated driver for XFree86? Has anyone tried pushing NVIDIA to release such a driver?
Here's the (pre-written/generic) response I got - not very encouraging:
