    so go prepaid. you can get "unlimited" data for $30 a month if you're willing to buy your own phone. and with the iphone about to have its 6th generation released there isn't much different every year so it's not like you have to run out and buy a new phone every year to keep up with specs

    most games will play on 2-3 year old phones
    email, evernote and facebook don't need dual core
    in fact 99% of what the phone does is OK on a single core. i could play MP3's 15 years ago on mobile CPU's so it's not like you need multiple cores to read email and listen to music.

    don't listen to the idiots at anandtech who keep dreaming that you need the latest and greatest to do simple things and you will have money. these were the same idiots who were telling people 10 years ago that you needed a $300 graphics card just to run the Windows GUI "fast"

    i have a 4 line family plan on AT&T with 2 of them out of contract or very close to being out of contract

    a few months ago i assumed i would just add more devices to the plan and they would use the existing 4GB of data my wife and I have and half of which we don't use. my father in law wants an iphone but not the extra $25 a month. and i could have made my next ipad a LTE ipad.

    except now i pay more for 1GB of data instead of the current 4GB I have and have to pay a lot for unlimited minutes and texts which are almost free for AT&T to carry

    smart talk can't get here fast enough since my wife's iphone 4 contract expires next month

    and we have an issue where the news media collects 20 year old sound bites or opinions and wants to know why a certain politician changed his mind on an issue. it's OK for people to change their mind but if you're running for public office you are pandering and you are supposed to keep the same opinions on issues for decades no matter what the cultural and technological changes are

    which looks legit. figure it was awarded in the early part of the last decade with a 3-4 year time for the patent office to process the application. looks like a legit patent for work being done years before BES became popular and when RIM was still selling texting toys to teenagers

    you buy it and expect it to last for years no matter how cheap it is

    for most of us the value is in smart phones and tablets which are much better at most tasks than PC's. i use my MBP to hold some photos and that's about it. between my wife and I most computer use at home is on iphones and ipad

    there is no NFC on the iphone now, nothing has been announced for iOS 6 and it's only a rumor for the next iphone

    how is he going to embarrass apple since they only have a few patents for NFC. and that's only because apple patents everything, even tech they don't end up using.

    if anything he's going to embarrass google since they are pushing NFC and google wallet

    they have to do it by contract in a lot of cases. for instance Disney says that ESPN has to be in the basic tier and everyone has to pay for it. of course ESPN recently signed an almost $20 billion deal with baseball or a combo of sports to broadcast games and access to a lot of coverage so they have to pay for it. the deal lasts until 2017 or so.

    its like catalog music sales from decades ago. the RIAA companies made most of their profits selling the same music in a new format or in greatest hits collections. except in TV you make money selling the same content on 20 different channels showing the same reruns or old movies

    i've noticed a lot more people i know don't watch TV much anymore and like to read, go outside and do other things that were considered geeky and dumb when i was a kid.

    my wife are cancelling cable next month after we realized that we're paying $165 a month for triple play and the cable part is mostly the same few kids cartoons that we DVR and watch multiple times and we can buy them on amazon for $10 PER SEASON and watch unlimited times

    dont underestimate the power of stupidity

    we go through this every year or so

    Content owner wants more money and demands rate increase
    TV service operator says no
    content owner pulls channels
    viewers scream bloody murder and rape and demand tv operator pony up a few $$$ of their limitless magical bank account
    tv operator blinks first then raises rates
    viewers complain but don't do anything
    repeat in a few years

    the content owners know people are dumb and live by the monthly payment and will blame their cable or satellite company. they sell their channels in bundles and raise the rates every few years. people continue to pay the higher rates because they are too stupid to do anything else other than look at rectangle with moving pictures
