  2. Novell's Time? IANAL on Judge Orders SCO, IBM To Produce Disputed Code · · Score: 5, Insightful

Novell has been sitting on the sidelines sending polite setup letters for a while. Perhaps this is what they have been waiting for.

By suing Novell's customers (for which SCO has been providing an administrative service) SCO has:

    1. Clearly defied a contractually valid direct order
    2. Took actions and asserted rights not specified in the contract, and
    3. Demonstrably harmed the product's (SysV licenses) future revenue stream.

Perhaps SCO thought the suit against Novell would somehow shield them from the reality that the only thing propping any of this up is their contract with Novell.

Here's to hoping for some "quick" justice.

3ware rocks. I'd highly recommend them for hanging large amount of spindles. I have a server with 2x 3ware 8 channel ATA100 with 16x60gb on a Tyan Thunder K7. JBOD 3ware+software raid5 yields ~130mb/s read ~90mb/s write. Even under high loads it's been rock solid. The worst part is the reliability of the IDE drives. This leads to a reboot about every 4 months to swap out dead drive(s).

I'd really hope the h/w raid5 for these guys would have improved over the last 2 years (it blew when i bought them).

It acts as a mail/web/proxy/postgres/oracle/smb/nfs/print/dhcp server for 15 people server without ever complaining.

a *slight* amount of research would have revealed something like this was possible, or even likely. ask winston groom.

if mr lee had anywhere close to a competant lawyer and took said lawyers advice, something this would not be happening.

i have sympathy for people getting ripped off for their hard work, but if you want your creation to come to life and you "comprimise" to make that happen, then you've got nothing to bitch about.

  6. fuck digital, try just "OK looking". on Lack of Digital Screens for Attack of the Clones · · Score: 1

if i could go to a movie theater and see a movie in _reasonable_ quality, i'd be a really happy camper. forget about digital. its a pipe dream for crack smokers.

ive attempted to see 2 movies in the last month.

blackhawk down: the screen was almost as big as my 53"... the aspect ratio somehow was all screwed up. everybody was really tall, and thin. did wonders for my self esteem. but if all i wanted to see was the vertical middle 60% of the film, put up with what my girlfriend called shooting stars (nice green streaks, continously streaking across the screen) and the sticky floor, the talking, the spring shooting up my ass, i might have had a good time. we walked out 2 mins into the film. refund city.

fellowship of the rings: bad picture quality (blurry, some streaks), ok sound, better theatre (it was clean). it was also 12am, so very few people were there. if i hadnt really wanted to see it i would have dusted off.

if they wanted to get me into the theatre to buy their $10 popcorn and $7.50 soda, they need to let me in free -or- provide a quality product. then i might buy their stale popcorn and watered down soda from someone who has no interest in making my day pleasent or even tolerable.

for now ill wait for vhs and/or dvd. at least the ups guy says hi and thanks. pop up some butter lovers, smoke a cig and hit play. then when i hear "baby i gotta pee" i can hit pause and check cnn.

i learned my lesson. going to the movies is dead.

    dead dead.

and not a moment too soon.

I remember college when I shut myself in my dorm room, away from all the 'distractions' of college life, be they social, scholastic, or just the light of day. It was a very nice couple of years.

In the real world though I found myself having to deal with the very things I despised then on a daily basis. I learned quite quickly the more I ignore them, the harder my life would become. The suits, the peons, and the scum sucking lawyers all needed time and attention, and if they did not get it I would be in a world of hurt professionally. Then it happened, I actually started enjoying (in the case of lawyers tolerating) them. It was like a mini vacation in the middle of the day to think about things in a different way. It opened up a whole new range of possibilities. Finding something useful in a 1/2 hour of dribble from an ex frat boy turned businessman happens on a regular basis now, and expands my possibilities immensely.

It takes all kinds. Squelching anyone only hurts yourself.
