Last Thanksgiving, I took the family to visit my Grandma and lots of uncles, aunts, and cousins. One of my cousins is a Doctor in a hospital in Louisville, KY. Knowing that I was going to be at my Grandma's house and that I was a computer enthusiast (geek?) he brought along a prototype system he was evaluating with other doctors in the hospital.
It was a Fujitsu tablet with a pc-card 802.11b card. It was running W2KPro. It didn't have handwriting recognition, but the interface looked polished enough to where you had little typing to do while using it -- mainly selecting from lists. Of course, there was the pop-up (over) keyboard when needed. He said that it was a god-send. They were tying it to the hospital pharmacy for patient medications as well as other aspects. I hope to see him this coming holiday season to see what progress has been made. I'd email him, but he's a Dr. and I can't read his typing.
I was discussing this very problem over a few pints at the neighborhood pub. Consensus held that DVD-R should win. However, all parties in the discussion agreed that what should happen is not what will happen.
More interesting is the old guy that overheard us and mumbled in beer speech: "DVD's!! I haven't even heard of CVD's -- I'm sticking with BVD's..." Which was followed by a few unintelligable sentences concerning underwear and conspiracies.
Since it is illegal to make unsolicited calls to a cell phone, how does this impact those with land-line phones forwarded to their cell phones? If I receive a telemarketing call on my cell phone that was forwarded when the telemarketer dialed my home phone, is the telemarketer violating a law?
Not that it affects me, I live in Missouri and our no-call list works beautifully. I have had one telemarketing call since the list was started. A few clicks on the mouse and a lookup of the phone number on caller id and I had it reported to the Missouri Attorney General's No-Call site.

Cracked Compaq Laptops?

I have great respect for the durability of the A series of IBM Thinkpads (I've got an A21p). Its been dropped, stepped on, played with by 3-7 year old children, and cursed at many many times. The titanium composite lid has never been scratched or broken or cracked.
I've also got an older Compaq Presario 1675 that has
1) broken/cracked usb port
2) cracked lid near hinges
3) 1 Hour battery life (I know, I need a new one)
I've never bought a Dell laptop because everybody I know that has one has had to send them in for various repairs or component failure replacements. To be fair, the Travelstar hdd on my 1 1/2 year old A21p shot craps after a rough family car trip. IBM overnighted me a brand new 48GB drive to replace my dead 32GB. Nice upgrade for a warranty replacement. Makes me wonder if the original poster might be able to talk Compaq in to fixing his systems with larger screens.
I don't have an A31p, but have had Debian (stable), various RedHats (7.x+) and a couple of Mandrakes (8.x+) running on an A21p. I'm running RedHat 7.3 right now with no problems.
To qualify that though, I must admit that I don't use the modem for anything, so I don't know if it works under Linux. I've got the mini-PCI 10/100 ethernet card that works just fine.
The Cirrus CS4297A audio works fine.
The video on the A21p is an ATI Mobility M3 and works fine at 1600x1200x32. The A32p uses an ATI Mobility FireGL with which I have no experience.
I also have a CompactFlash pc-card adapter and a usb wireless keyboard/mouse that work fine.
The A21p has S-Video in and out, but I have not had the chance to ever try this stuff on Linux.
So, overall, I am very pleased with Linux on the Thinkpad A21p. I expect the same of an A31p, but I won't ever see one. I have to hang on to this machine for another year. Then, who knows what will be available.
BTW, the IBM Travelstar 32GB drive in my A21p recently died. IBM replaced it with no questions. They overnighted me a 48GB drive and the warranty covered it all (as it should). Forunately, I had very recent backups.
Do you really want the public to decide what NASA can do with its money? Remember - we are talking about the PUBLIC. Rome had bread and circuses. In modern times, would it be pizza and pr0n? I'd rather let people who are educated in space technology and issues do the deciding. Joe Six-Pack has no business controlling the direction of NASA other than through electing representatives.
So, should there be public elections for the decision makers of NASA?
I have to get a few of these for my friends that work in cubicle-hell. Well, I tried to, but swingline.com has been/.'ed.

There are two questions to consider: physical longevity, and ability to read the data format.
I don't think we are talking about burning some CD's and burying them for 100 years and seeing if the information contained on them can be retrieved. Think about it -- when you were about to retire that old pc that had the last 5.25" drive (I still keep one, just in case), didn't you convert any important data stored on 5.25" media to a newer format?
Likewise, when you realize that the file format of important data is about to become obsolete, don't you convert it to the most common adequate format?
BTW, I have this 1MB 8" floppy and I have no idea what is on it (besides knowing that it is probably a stream of ones and zeros) Nor, do I care.
Gallery does indeed do the resizing during image upload. It creates a thumbnail and a reduced size image. Unfortunately, my site runs on an ancient p200 and it takes forever to upload a batch.
Going by your logic, there's no way I'm paying to be in a health gambling pool with guys who live off pizza and high-caffeine drinks, in the dark, smoking heavily and sitting down all day (and night)...
You forgot the beer. Like Homer said, "I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer."
Many of us, for example, use a VNC viewer running on a PC on our desks to display our Unix environments which are running on a large server in the machine room downstairs.
I do something pretty similar except I stay in the *nix environment unless on my laptop. Sure, vnc can be used like a "pcanywhere" tool, but it is much more.
I never have an X desktop on a server since I rarely have a monitor and mouse attached. But, I do have a video card in the server, usually a cheap S3. I configure XFree86 for the video card and use vncserver to create virtual X screens. Often, I will have two different vncservers running, one in kde, another in windowmaker. I start and stop these as needed via ssh. The virtual X sessions are not displayed anywhere on the server. Each instance of vncviewer, on whatever platform, can display a virtual screen. According to the docs, you can even have multiple vncviewers displaying on the same screen. However, this I have never had a need to try. That might just push me over the edge.
Give vnc a try. Its not the fastest or most secure thing, but it has served me very well. You assign an X screen number when starting the server and connect with:. When you disconnect, the session stays alive until the vncserver is shut down. You can connect to it from anywhere you have vncviewer.
U.S. Senators and Congressmen are not worried about being blackmailed by Echelon because they already are being blackmailed. Why else would they allow Echelon to exist?
Whether the story is true or not won't be solved here unless the original poster provides some evidence.
However, the statement that In order to fulfill my high school's community service requirements... shocked me. Do high schools have requirements for you to perform community service? If so, in what states? Both of the high schools I attended had no such requirement so long as you didn't get busted smoking a joint or something. One school is in Houston, Texas. The other is in Austin, Texas. Both were well regarded public schools -- which means a lot when going to public schools in Texas.
I too am on the no-call list and get the occasional junk fax here in Missouri. It does not happen enough to prompt me to do anything. However, I find it suprising that your call to their 800 number got you nowhere. Why not pretend to be interested in their drivel and ask to speak to a salesperson? Once you have that, see if they can email you more information to a freshly created hotmail account.
I'm not sure how much information you would actually get. But, it has to be a more effective information gathering approach than telling a phone-answering-inmate that they broke the law.
So what does smoking a gateway drug AND doin' gateway math get you?
3) You can see the equations spinning their beautiful graphical representations, but you can't explain them to anyone including your teacher.
Unless, of course, thats where you got the smoke.

I almost moderated this as "Redundant" but decided to post instead.
The reported scenario is just as plausable as your hypothetical one. However, your scenario is much more palatable to me.
