  1. Re: I think you misunderstand me on ESR/OSI's letter to Microsoft · · Score: 1

You are right, maybe I did misunderstand. Maybe you should have made your last post the first paragraph in your first post.

I guess IMHO, these people are "from the Open Source community". Although we don't have an "elected" body, there are always dissenting voices either way.

If you don't like the idea of Microsoft releasing their source, then by all means get up on your soapbox and tell us why. Heck, e-mail ESR and Larry Wall and tell them why.

I'm just glad that some respected voices from our community have stood up and made this point. I think by the names signed at the bottom of the list, they do represent our interests (if not everyone's point of view) pretty well.

  2. (You are) A disturbing false representation on ESR/OSI's letter to Microsoft · · Score: 2

The people whose names are at the bottom of that letter are people that people in our community (and outside) respect.

Your opinion of whether Micorosft should release their source code aside, the fact is that anyone can release anything under any license they choose.

The message that is being sent here is an excellent one:
If you want to relase open source, do it right or don't expect to any kind of welcome into our community.

I thought it was well written and calm, explaining a rational point of view. I'm glad that ESR and the others have taken this step in an open letter.

  3. This will never work... on Wintel "Thin" Servers to Compete with Linux · · Score: 1

...becuase Microsoft server software never works reliably.

The reason Microsoft can't relase reliable server apps (IMHO) is that they hide them under layers of GUIs and abstraction and crud.

    More complex = less relaible.

Adding a "web administration" layer on top of this can only make it worse.

If you want a cheap web server, try Linux running on an old Pentium box with Apache.

You're viewing the source code of algore2000.com, the official Gore 2000 Campaign Web Site.

If you like to program HTML, JavaScript, Java, C, Cold Fusion,Active Server Pages, Perl, cgi, or any other language used for web publishing -- if you are casually browsing our code, and you are interested in becoming actively involved with the campaign as a volunteer -- then you've come to the right place!

In the spirit of the open-source movement, we have established the Gore 2000 Volunteer Source Code Project. The source code project will make this one of the most open and interactive political campaigns ever.

When we expand the site in the coming months, content from source code volunteers from around the nation will be posted according to its geographic origin. For instance, if you are from Iowa or New Hampshire or California and you want to volunteer by writing content (in the programming language or on the platform of your choice)for those parts of the site, we urge you to do so.

Geographic origin is one criteria by which volunteer submissions will be judged. If you have an idea or concept that transcends geographic location, let us know and we will do our best to incorporate it into the site.

All individual volunteer ideas and submissions will be considered, and successful submissions will be credited as they go on-line.
This site is a living document, and we want it to get better every day. Your participation is crucial to its success.

To get involved with the Gore 2000 Volunteer Source Code Project, e-mail us at:

    sourcecodevolunteers@algore2000.com

Tell us who you are, and if posssible, (include the URLs for any work you have done to show us your talents, interests and abilities).

Thanks for checking out our source code -- and we are looking forward to hearing from you!

This is amusing, despite the fact that you can't "program" in HTML and "CGI" isn't a language.

Actually, the sad thing is that the best form of tech support you can get from MS is paying a couple of hundred $ a year.

I would stay away from NT becuase the O/S can't stay up worth a shit.

Aftern that, I would check out how much you want the box to scale. The Intel x86 architecture is not good when it comes to large scale h/w configurations.
