The Columbine picture absolutly shocked me. OJ and Di were forced into our skulls by the media. Most of us are familar with the rest (Assinations, children running from napalm, Birmingham) of the images, none the less they remain haunting.
But that Columbine pic.. You disconnect yourself from the suffering of other people, but once something (even art) transfers you to that place and time. *shudder*
Thank you for taking the time to share your side of the story. My extremly cynical view of the media still exists, but it appears you and Salon are welcome exceptions to the rule.
Maybe Salon created/embellished a story that wasn't really there? Kinda an out-there therory, I know. One wouldn't expect that type of thing from journalists.
Now if you'll excuse me I have to go watch a very special "It Could Kill Your Children" on Dateline NBC and read up on the start of the Spanish-American War.
Open source has its places. Air traffic control is not one of them. With a highly critical systems, there needs to be some measure of accountiblity there.
As a resident of Indianapolis, I can assure you this is indeed a knee-jerk reaction, but not in the way one would think. This is political posturing. Bart Peterson (mayor) couldn't give 2 sh*ts about the welfare of the children. The Democrats have broken the Republican stranglehold on this city's government, and they're going to push all sorts of crazy laws like this down our throat before the next election "for the children"
Of course, Indy was one of the first cities to repeal the 4th amendment. Compared to the roadblock (and our jack-booted thugs of police, but that's a different story), this story is nothing.
Well, just because they're being thrust in one of the most advanced machines ever built into a place where there's 0 atmosphere, 0 room for failure, and several hundred degrees difference between light and dark is irrelivant.
Now, several billion dollars being spent over several years... why, we could spend that in a day on welfare!! Where's my check???
Except for the fact that Johnny Sixpack gets a free IE with his computer.
Your average user has trouble checking e-mail, let alone changing browsers because "It's the right thing to do". The only hope Netscape has is if AOL shoves it down people's throats.
Actually, that's a good point. How long until we have "designer" hardware? People can't buy the Eddie Bauer and Nautica Ford Explorers fast enough. Just imagine how cool you'd be with a Gap Palm Pilot!! You'd be the envy of all the kids on your block and appear to be important!
Just as porn usually displays the beautiful people (or freaky goat sex, I'll spare the link), geekporn displays the more attractive types of stereotypical geeks. It's good for a laugh, though!
Mmmm... girl covered in equations.. Integrate me baby!! =)
Oh and from what I heard to colors on the probe are ALL wrong! An 11 meter boom and a lander? Oh, PLEASE! NASA! NASA! Mr. Cassini would not approve! Now had Mr. Cassini's services been retained, I'm seeing the most lovely little sun dress and a pair of matching flats. And we have just got to do something about that antenna dish. It's been done to death!
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" - Emma Lazarus
A good percentage of you are Americans because your ancestors came here in search of oppertunity. Never forget that.
Mir has been taken over, "conquered", if you will by a master race of space fungus. It's difficult to tell if they will consume the cosmonauts or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain, there is no stopping it; the space fungus will soon be here.
And I, for one, welcome our new fungal overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted website,/. can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground moisture caves.
(appologies to the Simpsons writers, i just couldn't resist..)
If they find for Indianapolis, I expect a looong drive into work the next morning. Maybe it's time to find a part of the country where I still have rights and can walk downtown without having to worry about being assaulted by a cop..

SpamCop seems to help me (and ISPs) out with legitimate spam.

At least logic rules where Indianapolis shows its ignorance.
And this city wonders why there's a "brain drain" (college educated people leaving the state as fast as they can)...
Anyone want to get a web developer with an inkling of a clue a job? =)

What's the big deal? People die all the time, why you could wake up dead tomorrow!
Good night! =)

I guess that fact is, it does matter now. MS levraged a lil' monopoly power and made it matter.
