Microsoft (or its post-breakup spawn) is a company.

    Companies try to make money.

Now, how many Joe Average users are going to spend an extra $1000 on a computer just to run a certain OS when there's cheaper Apple, BeOS, and Linux boxes sitting next to it at Best Buy? enough to make it worth it? We'll see once small businesses (the employers of 90% of Americans) start dumping the $1000 app for a reasonalby priced one.

No one's that stupid. Plus if you have to charge that much for a non-specialty OS to start with, you deserve to be out of business.

Agreed. I currently work in an enjoyable work environment after spending the past year in a seemingly endless world of suck. You know: screaming incompetent bosses, time reporing down to the minute, spending your nights cleaning up after those being rewarded for their ineptitude and stupidity. Oh yes, and the screaming customers for whom I'm cleaning up messes I didn't make, too. =) You all know the story, you can fill in the blanks. This is a job that taught me that people who claim that stress can actually cause you physical damage aren't making stuff up to scare people on Dateline: NBC or some other tabloid news show.

The point (there's a point?) is that I now work in an environment with friendly, experienced, and supportive people. If I stay late for several days or stay all night, management actually goes out of their way to let me know that's not expected.

But yet something's missing.. After talking with others their who left similar situations, we all agree in a strange way, we miss the stress.. It almost like I don't feel like I'm getting anything done unless it feels like someone's stabbed my in the side and I'm fighting just to take a decent breath.

Disclaimer: I am completly insane. Your milage my vary..
