RMS _is_ a kook, and GPL'd software isn't free. I personally think authors should be able to choose whatever licence they please, including the GPL, but the only truly free software is public domain software. GPL'd software is free of charge, and free for modification / redistribution, but it's only free so long as you only ever want to do the same things with it as RMS wants you to.
Don't you know that you can't put metal in a microwave?
Of course you can put metal in a microwave, you won't hurt your microwave, and you (usually) won't hurt the metal stuff you put inside. What you will do if there's nothing containing water in the microwave is overload the magnatron (just like running your microwave empty), but any microwave made in the last 10 years has an auto-shutoff to stop this happening long before you damage the components.
But make sure you have a glass or 3 of water in the microwave alongside your car to absorb excess microwaves:)
Further, if we are concerned about the externalities caused by 24/7 connected broad band home users who are unknowingly spewing spam, well, 24/7, we might have to recognize that few if any of them will ever use such tools to protect their systems, while the script kiddies will surely use such tools to hack them.
Good. If enough SKs hack enough boxes, perhaps people will start to patch early and often, or MS will start releasing more secure software, or people who don't patch will get too scared and stay off the net. Either way, Darwinian evolution (eventually) clears up the problem
Erm, America does not exist. There are two continents, North America, and South America, which contain various countries, one of which is The United States of America.
There's at least one intersection in brisbane that does that, stops traffic in all directions and the intersection's a pedestrian free-for-all. Disconcerting the first few times, but rather useful.
if they can take something and improve upon it, more power to 'em. Haven't really seen it happen with them yet
Think back.... Netscape 3 vs IE3.... IE was slightly better... then NS4 vs IE4.... no contest whatsoever.
Sure it's almost reversed, and firebird 1.0 will spank ie all up and down the road (I've been on firebird fulltime since 0.6 myself). But there was a time when MS saw a succsessful product (NS) and kicked the living christ out of it.
PNG??? Of course it won't be based around PNG. When they implement avalon (beta 1, q1 2k5 i believe) it's vector based. So this really is all a monstrous waste of time. I hardly think they're going to switch the bitmap format for unsupported skins from BMP to PNG between now and then, do you?
I just want a magic "exclude mailing lists" checkbox, it's so annoying the garbage you come up with from mailing lists (and the articles are _never_ where google thinks they are) if you're not specifically looking for list posts.
Why must we even pay per channel? Why can't we have the option of paying per hour? I'd get cable if I could pay for only what I use. Give me a PVR and and I'll pay by the hour for a few shows, a few movies, and shitloads of cricket/league. But fucked if I'm paying $50/month for friends and re-runs of crappy 80s sitcoms I don't care to see.
What? It's true. How free is code that I can't use unless I want to give away my sofware, mo matter how little a part the GPLd software is?

The solution of course is whenever you decide to do something stupid like jump off a cliff, flip a coin... heads you jump, tails you don't :)
As long as you've got rich parents, shitloads of cash, a lot of luck, and are an evil bastard.
Dude this is so not the place to misquote the holy trilogy ;-)
Well thanks for giving them the idea, ya bastard. Go patent it so a) they can't do it, or b) you at least get rich :)

Thankyou Fat Tony. However in the future, I would prefer a non descript briefcase to the sack with a dollar sign on it.
Scotland is not a country either
No shit? That's definitely news to me... Explain.

Because there was nothing interested posted yesterday, jeeze!

Under "worst death clip I've ever seen" I believe.
Warning: It's fucking unpleasant - if you dont want to see nasty shit, don't click
I think we can safely say that the suit will be CGI. And probably lousy CGI at that :(
Wow, I didn't know Jonathon Green was a slashdotter.

-1, Wrong
I have been correcting people over this for decades and still nobody corrects their usage
Because they're too busy laughing?
Except, the US has a navy, wheras china has 3 logs tied together with string. Troops aren't much use if they have to walk everywhere.
What I want to know is, how does one win an award for inventing a (lousy) Coolgardie safe?
Only an american would think we care if they like us or not.
Isn't the point of ranked voting that if you want Gore, but would rather bush than the others you put him second?
