Wow... my local vieo ezy (australia's biggest chain, our blockbuster if you will) rents cdrom games, has for years, most of them do here... I've rented a few games, and I didn't pirate any.
...Are these things tied to NTSC? Cause I'd absolutely love something like this, but as I live in australia, we're running on PAL. Does anybody know of anything in the PVR area that can run on PAL? Can these things be hacked to do it? What about a Tivo?
Read the article, the story poster got it wrong, they're elongating the front and the eng of the plane, ie stretching them out so the angle isn't so great, not making the plane longer. They're not actually trying to say they can prevent sonic boom, afaik that's not possible (hey prove me wrong), they just want to controll it a bit so it's not so damaging to ears / buildings / windows / fine crystal wine glasses
I'm sure it sucks even more in Finland. Here you can't get a.fi domain unless you are a corporation or an officially registered entity (like a party or a club). Furthermore, they can refuse your application if they think that, for instance, the club you want to register a domain for does not have a "publicly acceptable" policy.
No, we have that here as well. Well not the publicly acceptable part, but all it takes is a couple of people complaining anonymously under the censorship laws and you're pulled with (afaik) no recourse.
Domain registration / administration in australia sucks. I'm happy about any change in who's in charge, it'd have to be really shitful to be any worse than Elz. Apart from the attitude, and delays that have been posted about here by others, the.au policy is downright terrible. You can't have any domain that's in the dictionary, or any suburb name as listed as having a postcode in the white pages. This basically means that no businesses can get their own name, making domain names redundant since you can't as easily guess them, and it's harder for clients to remember something that's not very similar to your business name, or just too damned long which is the approach many australian businesses have taken.
Am I the only one who thinks that slashdotting a bathroom is a bad idea?

Hey guys, check this out! I know you're against spam and all, but this one isn't spam at all! I thought it was, and I've deleted countless messages just like it, but I decided -what the hell- I'll give it a go, and I couldn't believe my eyes! First only a few dollars came in, then the cheques started rolling in! I recieved $63,000 in just five weeks, and so can you! Just follow the simple instructions, and you can reach retirement at 23 just like I did!*
*Yes, this is a joke. that's +1(funny), not -1(idiot) thankyou.
Um.... guys.... Time to go back to the old slashcode. First time I loaded this story I got all the images from slashcode (ie the brown "slash" at the top and whatnot) instead of the normal/. images..... But it was still using the/. html colours.
LET ME POST DAMMIT! Did Microsoft release a new version of slash I don't know about? Should I look out for the blue about:mozilla of death?
This kind of stuff has got to stop. I own my computer. I'm not leasing it from anybody, it's a physical product and I own it. And I'll be damned if I want people smuggling their parasite-ware onto my pc, to make money from bandwidth I am paying for. When's this going to stop?
Now the Giant, along with many other companies, jump to Linux bandwagon. The question is wether this bandwagon is capable of carrying a Giant that huge. Or the question is: can Linux beats AIX?"
...Except they'll release 10 movies, which will promptly be cracked, up for download on whatever filesharing software is in at the time, they'll pull the plug, and we'll be reading about the arrests on slashdot within a month of the release.
...But this is the first (well second now) time I've posted since the move to 2.x.... And I was suprised to see my comment was no 2323220980...whatever, something long...
Have we lost the FP dickheads now you can't see which is first? Will that cause the space-time continuum to collapse in on itself?
I'm gonna cop it for posting offtopic and fair enuff, but I just had to say it, and at least I've got the balls not to post this anonymously.
1. DirectX is changing. It's updating, moving with the times, and incorporating new developments in graphics card technology in a standard way, there's features some cards don't support, but they're parts of directx, and they'll be on future hardware. On OpenGL, if you use the nvidia extensions, they're not going to be there on ati cards, even a few generations down the track when the same features are standard across platforms.
2. Since dx5, it's been a good environment. It took MS a while to get it right, but they're constantly updating it, which yes, means there's a continual learning curve, but that's what makes game programming the fun it is! OpenGL is controlled by comp scientists, DX by money, which means DX will always be quicker off the line with the features developers and customers want.
I know that MS makes it, and as a whole, MS is bad, but the company's tactics don't make the technology suck, and joe sixpack who wants to just go play unreal doesn't care if MS bundles ie to make his life easier or to kill netscape, cause it makes his life easier. There's one constant in life these days- people as a group, are cronically and terminally lazy. Most people view money less important than effort, and even their time less important than effort... Somebody would rather take 2 hours to do a 15 minute job if it makes it seem like less work to them.
The soon to be release Microsoft Zepplin XP goes faster, the seats are better, but at 30,000ft you've gotta call Microsoft or it deflates and you crash to your horrible death.
Apple Zepplin X looks the best of them all, but the steering controls are weird, and there's no tvs in first class.
Zepplux, the grass roots version, goes faster, stays up in stronger winds, but you've gotta sit on milk crates the floor:-)

Yeah, definitely, I've used speed to meet programming deadlines from time to time, you just send off the code before you decide to sleep for a whole day, with a message saying "sleep now. there'd better be a fire if you call me before thursday":)
You know blockbuster, where you go to get those cheap videos? Well those evil corporate bastards have made it so you can only watch it overnight, or for a few days, and then you have to take it back! TAKE IT BACK FERCHRISSAKE!!!! Not only that, but now thanks to the ADMC it's illegal to make my own copy for personal use for free whenever I want. Man, they must have bribed a few senators to get that one through! We must rally against it, this corporate mastery! It must be a scheme to keep the little guy, the grass-roots video publishers out of business- CONSPIRACY!
This is just crap. Let's say it's two bytes and 2 bits. That means that it can only describe 2^20 different files. With 200 bytes to play with, you can have around 80^200 different xml files (80 was pulled from my ass, 2 uppercase + lowercase + symbols).
Let's put it this way. 2.5 out of 200 is 80. that means.0125% of all 200 possible byte files, can be compressed down to 2.5 bytes, and that's providing perfect compression.
I'm sure that with the right sample file LZH will compress it down to just a few bytes too.
