ok.. the Tivo is only a 50Mhz PPC processor system running linux with a 4800rpm drive (30 gig) so the xbox hardware is more than capable of performing the task (tivo quality). There also seems to be an audio/video input at the back of the xbox (although I've read that it might not accept video input) and if you look on the motherboard there seems to be a chip (similar to the t1 4600) which seems capable of video capture. There are also rumours of a tool called xbmovie in the Dev kit which allows for video capture. The modchips allow for running of customised code so it is possible someone could write the software needed if all the above is true.

While the rest of the world has been sleeping we have been busily developing teleportation.
Australia's Teleportation project:
All we needed was Superconductor and Future Tech. In another 2 turns we will also have Genetic Engineering and the SETI Program!
I think your line of thinking is great but as some others have pointed out, those in power will still be able to control public opinion through mass media.
I think the reason we have the government we have at the moment is because they were the ones that influenced that -i beleive large- sector in the community who are not adequately informed about current issues. Because everyone must vote the election results becomes diluted by those uninformed voters.
This can be a great thing if the public is informed, intelligent and active. The problem is a large enough number of Australians do not have that combination of qualities.
The current system would be excellent if people were more educated. What is needed is a more honest mass media that educates rather than sensationalises. Higher Education must be actively encouraged and more places created for people of all economic backgrounds.
So a democratic nation limits freedoms hence making it un-democratic. So the word democracy loses its meaning and is used in place of capitalism.
The wonder of democracy is that it bogs down even the most simple decisions into a mess of red tape.
The people put controls on the research? Why is this a good idea? Why should I who know little about stem cell research have any say in whether or not it gets researched or not? Shouldn't the people who know about these things and are actively involved in it be the ones to make the decisions?
If scientists want to research stem cells they should, the government has no right or expertise to make any decisions on the matter. No matter how much they say 'it is for the people'. I didn't see the matter get put to a referendum.
So let me get this right: Stem cells hold the potential for good but without pondering the cliche consequences, the future might become an ugly place? Ok.
Which Governments actually do shows signs of fascism? What countries impose bans on scientific research and raise tariffs on imported goods all while preaching on Democracy and Free Trade?
As an artists I have found that it is possible to sell your music using the internet and make some money. You wont make millions but it is possible to make a nice supplementary income from it. I sell 10-20 albums every 2 months online in which I recieve $16 per album.. and I spend minimal time promoting (very minimal in fact) 1hr every week or two.
My strategy?
1. Upload as much of your music as you can onto mp3.com and the like, Audiogalaxy, Morpheus, etc..
2. Set up a website you update frequently
3. Sell your CD through an online music store like Chaosmusic.com where you choose how much the CD retails and will get around 85% of the retail price of the CD.
4. Promote the music online, word of mouth, email newsletters, newsgroups as much as you can.
5. Spend most of your time doing what you love: making music. As much as you can, uploading new tracks, ideas through the avenues above. The more feedback I get the more it inspires me to make music. It's a nice cycle.
6. Forget trying to be a star. The popular stars of tommorrow will be musicians making music in their bedrooms that will gain fame through online communities. It's already started to happen.
Because of course without "formal training" you cannot read papers that have been published by scientists before you. I guess he didn't work in Edison's Lab either, he was just the cleaner.
Anyway, I'm off to get some formal training.
As an independant artists I would like to know how/if we could contribute music to these kiosks.
If so it would be a great distribution medium for us indy artists

I wonder how much better off Australia would now be if Japan had managed to takeover Australia in the war.
Imagine being the primary exporter in the Asia-Pacific region.. hmm.
sorry, didn't know if anyone had said it yet ;)
So it's possible? Sick!
