"Understand that Microsoft generally sets extreemly low expectations"

"The Xbox is just a Inter/Windows PC"

"Software development companies that "port" their games to the Xbox from the PC because it is "easy" find out that 95+% of their sales comes from the PC market." (oh, yes, "port" right.. we wouldn't want to "port" anything because it is "easy". Excellent use of quotation marks.)

"The customers that have an Xbox seem to also have a great PC, and the games play much better on their PC. There are a few exceptions, specifically sports games."

    "Nvidea"

"Another mistake is betting heavy on online games with the Xbox." (Um, have you seen the PS3s chip design?)

"I will agree that Halo was/is a good game. Now put that game at 1280X1024 on a new(er) ATI or Nvidea card, or better yet look at it at 1600X1200 resolution. Now do the comparison to a TV and Xbox." (now do that comparison with any PS2 game)

"I have heard that the avearage Xbox owner owns less than 5 games. Now granted that is because it hasn't been out as long as the PS2, but if your statistic was correct then the average owner of an Xbox would have around 20+ games now. That seems a bit high." (Oh, you "have heard" have you. Nice.)

"Now let me add that if you decide to play online people with PC's will have a big advantage over the Xbox, because they will be able to "see" further." (Thanks for that tip, I dont need my glasses anymore)

"My main point still stands. The Xbox and the PC are going after the same market. ~14-35 year old males."

Yeah, which happens to be the same market as the Playstation. Did you really even need to make one post on that enlightening insight?

I think we are so surrounded by new developments that we tend to ignore the most important ones because we are searching for that wow factor. If we sit down with an objective, lets say, starting a business, it is relatively simple to put ideas in motion and successfully manage the operation without even having to physically meet or talk to another person. Not only can you put the ideas in motion you don't even have to utter any words to make these things happen. All that is required are certain keystrokes, in a certain sequence and bang, you've changed the world. I only realised this after starting an independant record label. Everything from making the music on a standard PC and home studio , promoting and making contacts, ordering and pressing the CDs, to distributing them throughout the world was done without even leaving my PC. I'm not talking about small time contacts either, but being able to personally e-mail the heads of several major record labels with an idea. All this has happened in the span of three months of inital conception of the idea. It has even got to the point where I have the opportunity to quit my current tech job and move overseas and do this full-time in an untapped market where our particular music is the most profitable.

All this in three months. The technology is there, the future is now.

You dont need "copyright permissions", you just need a license to distribute it within particular territories. If you think you can make money selling these CDs, write a letter to their publishers asking how much the license would be.

You take care of the artwork, pressing, distributing, and promoting of the CDs... bang, you become an instant record label and you can stop complaining about everything being out of print :)

The reason they dont press up these CDs is because (in their eyes) it is not economically viable. If it hasn't sold millions it means nothing to them. If you think there is a market, go for it. It'd cost you $1 per CD and you can sell em for at least $10.

  14. From a MX Developer's point of view on Microsoft To Acquire Macromedia? · · Score: 1

As a Macromedia developer I have to say that it would come as no surprise if this story turns out to be true. Perhaps it would explain the friendly reception of Microsoft .NET people at Macromedia Devcon this year sporting their .NET t-shirts at a conference of what I thought was a direct competitor to Cold Fusion.

I can see why it would sense to both Microsoft and Macromedia. Not only would it spark a revival for .NET by integrating the benefits of each suite but it could also help bolster IE over true contenders Mozilla. Imagine providing intergration and greater (perhaps only perceived) compatibility with Flash, Dreamweaver and Cold Fusion? Cold Fusion MX now allows for direct integration of JSPs and from my understanding the CFMX code is actually compiled into Java code. This seems like Microsoft's backdoor to the Java community. Being able to create web apps with all the benefits of Java with the simplicity of the Cold Fusion Markup Language sounds like a perfect product for them, all while being defacto-compatible with the huge number of *nix servers out there. So while on the surface it may seem like it's just a Flash/IE thing I think the story is much deeper.

Whether or not this will be a step up for easy development and delivery of web apps will remain to be seen. There seems potential for great things but an equal potential for some huge mistakes.

Audiogalaxy was the best p2p program available to share my music on to get more listeners. I had all my mp3s sitting on my share drive at work 24/7 so whenever someone decided to search for any of my music.. my entire catalouge would come up (33 songs or so). I would even pre-release music just for the guys who would download through Audiogalaxy.

Audiogalaxy gave us the power to be put on level footing with the rest of the large artists on the servers. We could join communities and get others to listen to our music... no other p2p program gives us that opportunity. I tried share my drive using Kazzaa but to my dissapointment the shared files rarely come up during a search...

I believe the reason RIAA shut down AG was becasue it gave independant artists the equal power to be heard. I could release my music exclusively on AG then through the HUGE array of community functionality talk communicate directly with ANYONE of the fans that liked my music. I could direct them to an online shop that sells my CD worldwide (chaosmusic.com - another excellent resource for the independant musician). If they bought the CD for $20 AUD ($12 US) I would get $15 per CD sold.

My bet is from now on P2P programs such as Kazzaa will NOT be hunted down by the RIAA becasue the majors should now by now that all these programs do is give the artists free publicity to sell their music. Didn't record sale profits rise these past couple of years? As long as major label artists/tracks are the easiest to find then they wont get shut down..

The greatest threat to the music industry is not piracy but the independant artists taking a greater slice of the $ you all spend on music. If you buy one of my CDs, that's $20 you won't be spending on a major label release.

They are out to destroy us not the pirates.

What would you buy? a) Microsoft Palladium PC or b) Region/signed code free Computer that plays everything?

Basically, as I understand it, what Microsoft are trying to do is sell computers like consoles. You keep it for a couple of years and buy the next whiz-bang one that comes out. By the time someone has hacked the current "console PC" to the point where it is actually customisable and useful, Microsoft will have already released the next one.

The only way I see Microsoft winning this battle would be to sell these console PCs and their software at a very cheap price and get all the major developers behind them... hmm, aren't they already doing something similar with the Xbox?

Of course some people will pirate games... but I seriously doubt this hurts console sales. If anything it gives the average person a reason to BUY it in the first place. The people that pirate games are usually the ones that defend/support that console until the end of its lifespan.

Paying retail price for a GOOD game is worth the money.. but I would NEVER pay full retail for a shithouse game because it would be only worth playing if it was FREE/much cheaper.

I would however pay for a game and an online service (such as Everquest) without question becasue the money I'm spending is worth it.

How many computer games are actually worth their retail price? Only a few I can think of. The rest are pirated because people feel cheated spending their hard earned money on crap titles.

Can you name me an excellent software title that LOST money due to piracy? I doubt it.

Give the Xbox another year before you start making judgements like that. Good quality games take a while to come and from what I've read there are some VERY impressive games coming over the next year.

PS2 is basically over.. the hardware is being pushed to its limit whereas the Xbox has yet to be stretched.

Why complain over whether or not MS is gonna make oney from the thing? Be happy that you have a powerful games machine which you can buy so cheap. It is currently the best electronic deal out there.

You should also be happy that MS are at least trying to expand the consoles life and give their customers more out of their consoles. It's more than Sega ever did for the Dreamcast.
