    (from central jersey):
wawas rule! and the one thing that everyone keeps missing is the following:
wawa has the country's favorite coffee! it says so right on the cups! and if you havent had it, you are missing some damn fine coffee. (pronounced "caw-fee", btw).

also, having spent the last 4 years in penn state, i'm also familiar to sheetzes. and they are *definately* inferior to a wawa. no free atms (pronounced "atoms"), and the gas is more expensive. the inside is not as clean, and the sheetz has nowhere near the selection inside. also, no good coffee!

lastly, they're EVERYWHERE in jersey, but they disappear very quickly as soon as you leave the state....furthest west in PA i've seen one is about 30 miles in..

  2. my ipaq... on Chess: Man vs. Machine Debate Continues · · Score: 1

i'm pretty decent at playing chess. i can beat my friend's palmpilot anyday. my ipaq, on the other hand, is a completely different story. my ipaq on "easiest" can crush me. i have played ~100 games against it, and i STILL cant even pull off a stalemate!

i guess its 206 MHz risc processor is just too much machine for me....even on "easy".

oh, btw, "easy" means that it spends 1 second per move on computations.

I dont know if this is rampant optimism or what, but as a senior graduating this semester with 2 engineering degrees in 4 years, a prestigious internship under my belt, and a significant list of marketable skills, I'm finding my job search on the east coast wraught with "we're in a hiring freeze" and "cash crunch -- I'm sorry, but we cant afford to hire anyone right now."

I'm graduating in may from penn state. I started off as an EE, and am now doing Comp.Eng in addition. There's a lot of overlap, so if you take way too many credits a semester, you *can* graduate in 4 years.

on ebay, a GENERIC stick of 128 megs that was USED is averaging $50.

and i'm wondering what the heck is going on here....it's been about a year since i bought anything on ebay...where did all the idiots come from?

  6. Re:My opinion is with the author on Should You Donate Money to Companies? · · Score: 1

come on, this is plain old silly. maybe some of you cant possibly imagine circumstances, but let me tell you about my position.

    1) the company i work for pays me double my last job.
    2) i believe that the company i work for is special -- it has a very important part in society (research), and i very much respect the values and manner at which it goes about attaining its goals.
    3) because of the stock market, the company is a little short on cash. our clients dont have the money to pay us, and our stock in our startups is not worth as much as it should be.

for these reasons, i want to help my company. i do not "donate" money to it, but i donate my time, which the company considers extremely valuable. typically i work longer than i need to without asking for overtime.

there's also some self-less motives that need to be involved in donating to...anything, and it seems that far too many people are too selfish to even consider that.

for example, a friend of yours would probably be considered for-profit, since, when he earns money, he would probably keep some of it. however, if he is in a pinch, would you donate to him?

  8. lame, oh so lame. on Hyperreality: The U.S-China Standoff · · Score: 1

china wants us to admit that we purposely rammed into their fighter plane, killing the pilot. seeing as this is almost an impossible story, there's no reason why the us should concede.

china is testing our new president, to see if he has any balls or not, and its pretty obvious from the way he's handling the situation that he doesnt.

bush should demand the hostages back, or else the most favored nation status will go away effective tomorrow. if that doesnt do it (which it will), then its time to mention the possibility of the US giving aid to taiwan. once we get the hostages back, we destroy the plane.

china wants to wear the daddy pants, and bush is letting them. if we're not careful, the verocity of chinese nationalism has the capability to destroy this country, and we should not let it foster by letting them play with american hostages.

  9. jeez! on What Does the Future Hold for Low Emission Vehicles? · · Score: 1

some of these comments flat-out amaze me. batteries are waaay behind from where they need to be, in price, power, size, weight, cost, life, and disposability. this is a *severe* damper on electric vehicles.

then there's people bashing 'suv's. i have an '88 jeep, and it gets 21mpg city. it gets good mileage because i dont floor it off the line, and keep the vehicle well-maintained. and for those of you who think that 21mpg is hogging gas, and think that my jeep is a waste of power/fuel/etc, (someone mentioned a $3-$4 per gallon tax increase on gas to subsidise public transit).....WELL

public transit does NOT fit my needs. my road wasn't paved until a few years ago, and is never plowed. i *NEED* 4wd and good ground clearence in the winter. i make use of these features on average atleast once a week in the winter.

dependability is also of huge importance. my dad's jeep is a little older, and sports 260,000 miles. most of the parts are still origional. these trucks are more durable than the $8,000 geo's it sounds like many of you drive.

when i move to/from school, i fill the back of my jeep to the brim. it swallows all of my possessions, and it doesnt tax the engine. no car would be able to give me this versitility.

i also work on construction sites, creating smart homes. i'd like to see a small car try and traverse this kind of territory....with several thousand pounds of wire in the back.

if the purpose of your vehicle is to get to/from work with your briefcase, fine - a little car is great for you. but dont think that everyone in the world is like you.

lastly, many of you seem to think that the internal combustion engine is obsolete. NOTHING IS FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH! with new technologies on the horizon including electronic (or pnuematic) valve control, new spark systems that flaunt near-total combustion, computer-monitored and controlled everything.......the advances in the short future to the engine are incredible.

in fact, i remember reading just a few weeks ago in pop.sci that several of the big auto-makers will start shipping pickup trucks and suv's with diesels in them that are so clean that they are considered "near-zero emissions vehicles." the author joked that if you feed one of these engines clean air, the exhaust will be cleaner than the air in southern california. and these engines dont even take advantage of the soon-to-be technologies i mentioned earlier!

plus, diesel takes *very* little energy to prepare. natural gas and other solutions may pollute slightly less, but when you look at the pollution and energy required to distill them from crude.....there's no comparison. diesel works out just plain cleaner, and more efficient.
