This sounds more like a paradigm shift in our thinking, than an end to politics.
Politics is a way of interacting with other people.
True. It seems that this "old" system needs to be revamped due to the apathy and the dislike that the citizens, not just the netizens but all of 'em, have for this current political system.
The change that will happen will have to be a revolution, whether it is peaceful or not depends on the people. IMHO, I think it will be peaceful. But a change does need to take place.
They have little plot. Underutilize characters that he sets up as main characters, overutilizes background characters. Follows no coherent pattern in the storyline.
He may do his research, but I would wish to God (not Stephenson) that he would read the other God's book --Sol Stein's Stein on Writing. Maybe that would help him out.

A while back (possibly the last 2 days, who knows?) some one posted something about how the editors are posting stupid little comments at the end of their topics, or whatever. I agree and with this you can see that they are taking pot-shots at authority figures (whether you like them or not: Gates, Bush, Gore, etc.)
There are several things that you gain from going to college.
1. The "Piece of Paper". The degree goes a lot to say that you have completed a list of requirements, proving that you do know some stuff. (Practical experience may be a little different.)
2. You learn how to deal with bureaucracies and all that they entail. This can help in a future job at a big company. You will have to deal with their bureaucracies and politics.
3. In some classes (Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science) you work in teams on certain projects. This gives a vital, yet often overlooked, skill. Communication.
4. You get to spend thousands of dollars to some institution.

Actually, xeroxing, or more appropriately "photocopying", a full textbook is illegal. However, I know many students, including myself, that do this all the time. What will happen if this does become a viable way for textbooks is the same as what is happening with DVDs. People will find a way to crack the code and not pay for it. Then it will be passed on napster-like, or more likely gnutella style.
I don't think that these time-lock books will be replacing the old-fashioned hard/soft bound books anywhere in the next decade. Universities are more resistant to change than the government, or anything else on this planet. So we can all relax and live in a close-minded society.
